Qual a diferença entre prefer e would rather?

Para começar a entender, saiba que o tema dessa aula poderia ser “como expressamos nossas preferências em

inglês?”. Então, eu daria duas possíveis maneiras de expressá-las. A primeira é com o verbo prefer. Já a segunda

seria com a locução would rather, geralmente abreviada para ‘d rather.

A partir das duas palavras eu seguiria com os exemplos:

I prefer to travel at night. [Eu prefiro viajar à noite.]

She prefers her coffee black. [Ela prefere o café dela puro.]

I’d rather stay here. [Eu prefiro ficar aqui.]

She’d rather go by bus. [Ela prefere ir de ônibus.]

Dadas as duas formas eu encerraria a aula e desejaria um excelente dia a todos. No entanto, alguns alunos

certamente perguntariam: “Teacher, em que situações devemos usar prefer e would rather? Qual a diferença entre

elas?”. Além, é claro das dúvidas com relação à formação das sentenças que se dão de maneiras diferentes nos dois

casos.

Em inglês, usamos o verbo prefer quando estamos nos referindo a preferências em geral. Ou seja, aquela preferência

faz parte da minha vida, do meu modo de pensar, do meu modo de agir.

Minhas escolhas são tomadas a partir daquela preferência em geral. Assim, quando eu digo “I prefer to travel at

night“, estou dizendo que se eu tiver que viajar em qualquer momento da minha vida a preferência será por uma

viagem noturna. Gramaticalmente, é importante salientar que após o verbo prefer, eu posso utilizar um verbo no

infinitivo, ou no gerúndio e as duas formas estarão corretas, assim:

She prefers to drink milk in the morning.

She prefers drinking milk in the morning.

Já o uso de ‘d rather‘ é feito quando nos referimos a uma preferência em determinada ocasião. Ou seja, é o que eu

prefiro naquele exato momento. Portanto, diante de uma situação envolvendo ir a algum local de ônibus ou de táxi, eu

posso dizer “I’d rather go by taxi“

Para facilitar, imagine que alguém chega até você e diz “let’s go partying tonight?” [vamos pra balada hoje?]. Você

então diz “No, thanks! I’d rather stay home and watch some TV” [Não, valeu! Eu prefiro ficar em casa e assistir um

pouco de TV]. Neste caso o uso do “‘d rather” é feito apenas para expressar a preferência naquele momento. Refere-

se àquela ocasião específica.

Gramaticalmente, é importante salientar que após a expressão “’d rather”, o verbo deve vir SEMPRE no infinitivo sem

o TO! Portanto, uma sentença como essa abaixo, estará INCORRETA:

We’d rather to play soccer today!

Em resumo, use o verbo “prefer” para se referir às suas preferências em geral [coisas que gosta, não gosta, quer,

deseja, etc]. O uso de “‘d rather” será feito quando estiver expressando uma preferência específica em [ou para]

determinada ocasião.

E não se esqueça de observar as diferenças dos verbos que seguem as duas expressões! Observe mais exemplos

para fixação:

I prefer reading than watching TV. (Prefiro ler a ver televisão).

Susan prefers staying longer at work than arriving there early in the morning. (Susan prefere sair mais tarde do

trabalho a chegar mais cedo pela manhã.)

I'd rather die than vote for a certain woman candidate! (Prefiro morrer a votar em uma certa candidata!)

Would you rather go to Paris or New York? (Prefere ir a Paris ou Nova York?)

I think John would rather travel alone than with his friends. (Acho que o John prefere viajar sozinho do que com os

amigos.)

I would rather not know how to write and have something to say than know how to write and have nothing to say.

(Prefiro não saber escrever e ter algo a dizer do que saber escrever e não ter nada a dizer.)

Prefer: is used to express what we prefer in general. Ex: I prefer living in the country; I prefer to walk rather than taking the bus.
