Residents with an active e-mail account will be receiving a Resident Satisfaction Survey on May 3rd. Please take the time to provide some honest feedback on the level of service you have been receiving during the last year. Considering all that has occurred with the pandemic and our response to your health and safety, I am hopeful your responses will be favorable.

I also want to mention that Five Star has asked for residents in our independent living communities to terminate any future employee appreciation funds. Five Star will compensate employees each year with a monetary bonus, which will be largely determined by your responses to the Resident Satisfaction Survey. Communities that receive a high percentage of positive responses will receive a bonus that will be distributed to hourly employees in appreciation for their service

at the end of the year. Please remember that Five Star has a strict NO

TIPPING policy and any employee who accepts money from a resident may be terminated from employment. Our “Way To Go” program is a more appropriate way to thank employees who go “above and beyond.” Submission forms are available at the Front Desk and two employees are chosen each month to receive a $100 gift card as a thank you from Five Star.

To those of you in Assisted Living, we will be showing appreciation to our nursing staff this month for all that they do. Thursday, May 6th, is National Nurses Day and this year, more than ever, we are grateful to have our dedicated team members. Please join me in giving thanks to them on this special day!

After a long winter, spring flowers are like endorphins made visible. They boost well-being on multiple levels—their soft, saturated colors; their scent activates the

benefits of aromatherapy; and their resilience is a reminder that even in the stillness and darkness, that

life is present and waiting to burst into bloom. The most beautiful spring flowers usually come with a story. The weather is getting warmer, the birds are singing, the flowers are poking their heads up through the dirt. What a perfect time to spruce up courtyards, planters and landscapes. Spring is also the time of year where ballparks are reopening and fans are eager to see their favorite teams and players back on the field. “Field of Dreams” is our monthly theme and with it comes a great deal of festive and creative fun for both our residents and team members. Watch your chance to participate in these special events. Also, check the listings for great baseball and sports-themed movies on Thursday afternoons like Bull Durham, For the Love of the Game and Major League.

The Koreas and the Effect of a Rogue Nuclear State Thursday, May 6th • 11:00 a.m. Silver Screen by reservation / Also shown live on Ch. 92 Rebroadcast: Sunday, May 9th • 1:00 p.m. — Ch. 92

Born through its imperfect liberation from brutal Japanese control at the end of World War II, North and South Korea became an early front in the Cold War. They engaged in a bitter conflict, with allies that included the United States and China. Although the fighting ended by armistice in 1953, no formal treaty ending the conflict has been made.

Today, South Korea is a prosperous, highly-developed democratic state. North Korea, led by the third member of the ruling Kim family, Kim Jong Un, is a Stalinist, paranoid, nuclear-armed state. It nurses real and imagined grievances against its neighbors and toward the United States, whom it perceives as their protector and its ultimate enemy. Let the Cold War Begin Thursday, May 20th • 11:00 a.m. Silver Screen by reservation / Also shown live on Ch. 92 Rebroadcast: Sunday, May 23rd • 1:00 p.m. — Ch. 92

The euphoria Americans felt at the end of World War II would be short-lived. Almost immediately, the Soviet Union, through various means, sought to dominate parts of Europe and Asia. Then, in August of 1948, the USSR detonated their first nuclear bomb and two months later Mao’s Communists prevailed in the Chinese Civil War.

At home, a full blown anti-communist hysteria caused the FBI and committees in both houses of Congress to search for Communists in our midst. Soon, Alger Hiss, Klaus Fuchs and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg would be accused of being Soviet agents. The opportunistic Senator from Wisconsin, Joseph Mc McCarthy, would demagogue his way to great notoriety. Then, in June, 1950, war in Korea would bring the U.S., Soviet Union and Red China into direct and indirect conflict with each other. Eldercation
