(CC) www.peterkittleusedcars.com.au ALL TV TIMES ARE PROVIDED PRESS READY BY STATION NETWORKS NEWS College milestone IN 2014, St Philip’s College will celebrate 25 years of providing academic excel- lence to rural and remote Australian students. On January 23,1989, the College opened its doors as a day school for the first time. It was originally estab- lished in 1965 as a residential boarding facility for chil- dren of families living in remote areas of Central Australia and for the first 24 years, St Philip’s operated as a residential hostel only. But when headmaster Chris Tudor arrived in 1986, he and College Life Govern- or, Jan Heaslip OAM judged that the time was right to convert the school into a fully fledged boarding/ day school. ‘‘A good education is your ticket to freedom. It helps to foster knowledge, to create an analytical and critical mind. It enables a person to make wise, well-informed decisions, to be considerate and compassionate,’’ Mr Tudor explained at the jun- ior academic assembly a few weeks ago. He added that a good ed- ucation also occurs outside the classroom. As you travel and meet people, your class- room moves with you. As you sit and listen to a friend, a family member or a stranger you learn, and this notion is evident in the cur- riculum at St Philip’s. With a strong academic, outdoor education, perform- ing arts and local, national and international commun- ity service based program, students have a huge sub- ject choice. ‘‘Never take education for granted. Have a life-long eye for the opportunity to learn and every time you see it, grab it, devour it and you will grow strong as a result,’’ Mr Tudor urged. There are limited places in some year levels for 2014. Call Carol Leesong, on 8950 4501 for enrolment. Stepping stone to study AUSTRALIAN Indigenous people are aim- ing high and turning their academic dreams into reality thanks to a program designed to prepare them for success at university. More than 90 per cent of graduates of the Preparation for Tertiary Success (PTS) course have moved into further study or employment. PTS is delivered by the Aust- ralian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE), a joint partner- ship between Batchelor Institute of Indi- genous Tertiary Education and Charles Darwin University (CDU). PTS gives Indigenous students the re- sources to understand what is required to be an effective life-long learner, which partly explains the high transition rates. Originally from Alice Springs, Andrew Clements left school in the 1980s. ‘‘I’ve done all sorts of work in my life, like tyre fitting and labouring on construction sites. I just didn’t want to keep doing that year after year. It was hard work and it just wasn’t interesting me.’’ Now Andrew has finished PTS he is looking forwarding to starting the Bachelor of Health Science in 2014. Valuing the knowledge and skills that Indigenous students already have and com- bining it with the academic knowledge and skills of mainstream study is the corner- stone of ACIKE’s both-ways philosophy. The mixed-mode delivery model means that students from remote communities and towns are able to attend study work- shops for one or two weeks at a time. Students then travel home again and continue their studies online, often at a local community learning centre or a cam- pus of one of the ACIKE partners, where they can use the facilities and resources. Applications are now open for people who want to study in 2014 at acike.edu.au. To discuss your ACIKE study options contact ACIKE directly on Freecall 1800 061 963 or email: [email protected]

College milestoneIN 2014, St Philip’s Collegewill celebrate 25 years ofproviding academic excel-lence to rural and remoteAustralian students.

On January 23,1989, theCollege opened its doors as aday school for the first time.

It was originally estab-lished in 1965 as a residentialboarding facility for chil-dren of families living inremote areas of CentralAustralia and for the first 24years, St Philip’s operatedas a residential hostel only.

But when headmasterChris Tudor arrived in 1986,he and College Life Govern-or, Jan Heaslip OAM judgedthat the time was right to

convert the school into afully fledged boarding/day school.

‘‘A good education is yourticket to freedom. It helps tofoster knowledge, to createan analytical and criticalmind. It enables a person tomake wise, well-informeddecisions, to be considerateand compassionate,’’ MrTudor explained at the jun-ior academic assembly a fewweeks ago.

He added that a good ed-ucation also occurs outsidethe classroom. As you traveland meet people, your class-room moves with you. Asyou sit and listen to a friend,a family member or a

stranger you learn, and thisnotion is evident in the cur-riculum at St Philip’s.

With a strong academic, outdoor education, perform-ing arts and local, nationaland international commun-ity service based program, students have a huge sub-ject choice.

‘‘Never take education forgranted. Have a life-long eyefor the opportunity to learnand every time you see it,grab it, devour it and youwill grow strong as a result,’’Mr Tudor urged.

There are limited places insome year levels for 2014.Call Carol Leesong, on 89504501 for enrolment.

Stepping stone to studyAUSTRALIAN Indigenous people are aim-ing high and turning their academicdreams into reality thanks to a programdesigned to prepare them for success atuniversity.

More than 90 per cent of graduates of thePreparation for Tertiary Success (PTS)course have moved into further study oremployment. PTS is delivered by the Aust-ralian Centre for Indigenous Knowledgesand Education (ACIKE), a joint partner-ship between Batchelor Institute of Indi-genous Tertiary Education and CharlesDarwin University (CDU).

PTS gives Indigenous students the re-sources to understand what is required tobe an effective life-long learner, whichpartly explains the high transition rates.

Originally from Alice Springs, AndrewClements left school in the 1980s. ‘‘I’ve doneall sorts of work in my life, like tyre fittingand labouring on construction sites. I justdidn’t want to keep doing that year afteryear. It was hard work and it just wasn’t

interesting me.’’ Now Andrew has finishedPTS he is looking forwarding to startingthe Bachelor of Health Science in 2014.

Valuing the knowledge and skills thatIndigenous students already have and com-bining it with the academic knowledge andskills of mainstream study is the corner-stone of ACIKE’s both-ways philosophy.

The mixed-mode delivery model meansthat students from remote communitiesand towns are able to attend study work-shops for one or two weeks at a time.Students then travel home again andcontinue their studies online, often at alocal community learning centre or a cam-pus of one of the ACIKE partners, wherethey can use the facilities and resources.

Applications are now open for people whowant to study in 2014 at acike.edu.au. Todiscuss your ACIKE study options contactACIKE directly on Freecall 1800 061 963 oremail: [email protected]
