INTERNATIONAL TRAIL RUNNING KEEPS GROWING: IT NOW REACHES THE END OF THE WORLD!

Today, TRAIL RUNNING has ceased to be a simple hobby of race lovers and enthusiasts of natural trails, to become a global discipline.

America, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Europe offer MORE THAN 20 THOUSAND TRAIL EVENTS, in all possible scenarios. 25 MILLION PERMANENT RUNNERS participate in these competitions.

THE HEART OF THIS COMMUNITY IS THE UTMB® (Ultra Trail of Mont Blanc®), present since 2003 in Chamonix, France.

With 16 years organizing trail competitions around the Mont Blanc, UTMB® HAS ALSO BECOME INTERNATIONAL launching, in recent years, races in other parts of the world, such as China, Oman and now Argentina.

WITH THE INICIATITVE OF SOUTH AMERICAN SPORT COMPANY, IN APRIL 2019 SOUTHAMERICA WILL HAVE ITS FIRST “BY UTMB®” RACE: USHUAIA BY UTMB®.

It will be a unique event, governed by ITRA´s VALUES –from the International Trail Running Association– (like authenticity, humility, fairness, solidarity and fair play) and organized with all THE TECNOLOGY AND EXPERTISE OF UTMB® INTERNATIONAL.

USHUAIA BY UTMB®´S PROPOSAL: to offer, to the millions of trail lovers of all nationalities, an extraordinary race in the city at the End of the World: Ushuaia, Argentina. To live the culture and spirit of the Argentine people, while exploring an amazing country and experiencing an unforgettable adventure.

Most of TRAIL RUNNERS live in big cities. They are the most aware athletes when it comes to the protection of the environment and the importance of solidarity.

TRAIL EVENTS represent the possibility of promoting local tourism and raising awareness regarding the respect for others, for one's own body and for nature.

UTMB® MONT-BLANC EN NÚMEROS UTMB®: WORLD TRAIL SUMMIT

This mythical event began in the 2000´s, when nine friends had the idea of developing a race leaving from Chamonix, France and going around one of the highest mountains in Europe: the Mont-Blanc.

Today, for a week, MORE THAN 10.000 ATHLETES run around the massif, passing through different towns and countries (France, Switzerland and Italy) depending on the course they choose (the event offers today 7 RACES, of up to 170km).

In the light of the high demand for registration, UTMB® performs a selection process based on ITRA POINTS (from the International Trail Running Association). Athletes conquer these points by being finalists in some of the 4,500 CLASSIFICATORY TESTS that go on around the world.

This system ensures that runners have the necessary experience to participate in the UTMB® and allows managing the number of participants so that the races are developed in good conditions (quality, safety and respect for the environment).

AUTOUR DU MONT-BLANC is the company that created, owns and organizes UTMB® Mont-Blanc. CATHERINE & MICHEL POLETTI are the co-directors of the event, their main shareholders and owners of the UTMB® trademarks, Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc® and Ultra-Trail®.

In the last 16 years, they have become the most experienced personalities in the world of trail running, with a unique knowledge in event management and in the development of this sport.

UTMB Mont Blanc® went from

711 registered runners in its

1st edition, to 3,400

applications for registration

only 3 years later. In 2008, all

the places available were

complete 8 minutes after

the registration was opened.

REVERED BY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF ATHLETES,

UTMB® IS A GLOBAL, PREMIUM AND

LEADING BRAND IN THE TRAIL RUNNING

INDUSTRY.

SOUTH AMERICAN SPORT COMPANY + UTMB® INTERNATIONAL

UTMB® INTERNATIONAL

In 2016, AUTOUR DU MONT-BLANC and OC SPORT (marketing company specialized in outdoor sports) CREATED UTMB® INTERNATIONAL: a company that aims to develop the UTMB® brand in all continents: Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Middle East.

UTMB® INTERNATIONAL’S MISSION: to further develop the sport of trail running in order to professionalize it, as well as to support the creation of “Premium" trail running events, working with independent organizers from all over the world (from existing event organizers to local governments, and even the sports event companies that know the local terrain, understand the population and know how to protect the natural environment) and share their vision and values with them.

“UTMB® is the most important event and brand in the world of trail running. It's like the Formula 1 for motorsports, the Tour de France for

cycling or the Dakar for the rally. Therefore, we have now the opportunity of hosting the most important brand in the world in this discipline. It is a

great pride for us to be associated in a franchise with UTMB®.”

JUAN PABLO TARELLI, CEO OF SASC

SOUTH AMERICAN SPORT COMPANY

In 2018, UTMB® INTERNATIONAL started collaborating in the ORGANIZATION OF USHUAIA BY UTMB®, the first “by UTMB” in South America, along with SOUTH AMERICAN SPORT COMPANY (SASC), a company that organizes professional sporting events.

Formed by a highly qualified team, SASC has designated DANIEL CATANIA AS ITS RACE DIRECTOR. Catania is a mountain guide, security and rescue specialist and instructor of climbing and mountaineering, with more than 10 years organizing sports events in Ushuaia (skiing, trail running, orientation duathlons and snow trail).

At the rate of 3 events per year, more than 4,000 runners have participated in his competitions. In addition, Catania has been the President of the Andino Club of Ushuaia for 10 years and he travels yearly to Antarctica as a travel guide for cruises, in charge of glacier terrain security and logistics.

ARGENTINA WILL BE THE

WORLD´S SHOWCASE

OF TRAIL RUNNING

Among South American countries, ARGENTINA HAS THE MOST REGISTERED RUNNERS IN THE UTMB® MONT-BLANC. In addition, the country has an important trail circuit.

It makes sense, therefore, to organize the FIRST SOUTH AMERICAN "BY UTMB®" EVENT in this country. Specially, in USHUAIA, CAPITAL CITY OF TIERRA DEL FUEGO. Best known as “THE END OF THE WORLD” (even internationally, where it enjoys great prestige as a unique touristic destination).

The competition is expected to have a HUGE IMPACT IN THE CITY, with the assistance of runners from all over the world and from different parts of the country, accompanied by their families and friends.

In addition, the event will show THE BEAUTY OF THE SOUTHERN PATAGONIA and help promote this sport, it will leave a network of mountain trails (for both visitors and local inhabitants) and provide the opportunity to demonstrate the ability of the province to organize an international event of elite characteristics, in the precise moment when Ushuaia has been nominated to host the Olympic Youth Winter Games of 2024.

THE CHOICE OF THE END OF THE WORLD FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY RACE

TIERRA DEL FUEGO, USHUAIA, END OF THE WORLD:

With its INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT only 3 hours away on a direct flight from Buenos Aires (and 15 minutes away from the city center), Ushuaia will host the start and finish of each race, as well as all the celebrations of the event.

The city is located in the coast of the Beagle Channel, which connects the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean, has stunning views, offers FIRST CLASS ACCOMMODATIONS AND CUISINE and has A GREAT VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES for runners, their family and their companions to enjoy.

THE LANDSCAPE THAT SURROUNDS IT IS UNIQUE: mountains, lakes and lagoons, rivers, peat bogs, forests and glaciers coexist with an incomparable fauna and flora.

“It is very exciting to organize an ultra this impressive, where the vast alpine landscape and high mountains dives directly into a unique channel that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Being one of the most remote points of the planet is much more than a simple marketing slogan, since no other international sporting event has set foot here. Take a map and run a finger directly east or west of Ushuaia, and the next time your finger touches earth again it will be in Ushuaia!“ REMI DUCHEMIN UTMB® INTERNATIONAL GENERAL MANAGER

“It will be a very technical race. Whichever course they choose, participants will go through wild landscapes that are the dream of any trail runner: steep mountains, hills, lagoons and rivers, pipes, sub Antarctic forests and glaciers, all very close to Antarctica.

Runners will get to know some of the most spectacular places at the End of the World and will face important ups and downs, advancing on diverse terrains (like animal footprints, remote and hard to reach trails, areas of rock, earth and mud and grasslands), in a sometimes extreme environment, where they will be able to experience the 4 seasons of the year in only one day.

The 4 distances will be run individually, in a single stage, at a free rhythm, at the time indicated by the time barriers of each test and under the semi-autonomy modality.

In other words, between each assistance post, runners must carry and ration their food and their drink, carry their equipment, make sure that they have the right clothes, take care of their health and adapt to the problems that may arise. Participating in the competition will require, therefore, to be well trained and to have all the mandatory equipment that is required by the organization."

THE COURSES:

FMU 130 KM

11

This course is a true mountain ultra-marathon, for experienced runners. The trail offers spectacular views of the Beagle Channel, Five Brothers and La Cloche mountains, The French and Tristen passages, Bonete Hill, Cortez Mountain, Middle Hill and Esmeralda Lagoon, among other iconic points. In particular, participants will be able to visit Cerro Castor, the southernmost ski center of the planet.

Competitors will cross more than 8 mountain passages, which connect the valleys of the southern Andes. Because Argentinian Patagonia is one of the wildest and loneliest places that exist, participating in this 130km route will be like running 160km, for participants from other parts of the world.

The route will eventually reach Lake Fagnano area, a huge body of water of glacial origin that spreads 110 kilometers. Ancient inhabitants of this land wisely called it “Khami”, which means “Big Water”. Later, European settlers named it after Monseñor José Fagnano, the first Salesian director in the Patagonia.

This area will be the northernmost point of the race before runners begin their return, crossing the Andes once again, to reach the mountains that surround Ushuaia and make their way back to the city.

FBT is a circuit aimed at runners with experience in mountain races of similar distances. As you ascend in the course, you will admire the Beagle Channel and incredible views of glaciers, lakes, lagoons, hills and valleys.

Even though the route will be, in certain points, similar to the 130km ultra (offering the possibility of passing through emblematic sites such as Olum valey, Bonete Hill, Cortez Mountain and Middle Hill), the best part of this circuit is the impressive view of the Five Brothers Mountain that runners will encounter.

This mountain, 1,037 meters high, is located east of Ushuaia and stands as an icon of the city, with its five well-defined peaks. Escorting Mount Olivia in its reign over the elevations of the area, the “five brothers” offer an extraordinary spectacle of the capital at the End of The World.

After crossing numerous passages in the middle of the Andes, runners will return to Ushuaia, bringing with them the memory of a unique journey through this wild territory.

LCT 50 KM

ELT 35 KM

This trail allows runners to appreciate mountain passages as well as elevations like Bonete Hill, Cortez Mountain and Middle Hill, among other distinctive sites of Ushuaia.

LCT`s main characteristic is that it offers unique views of La Cloche Mountain, which rises 1,000 meters above sea level. Together with Mount Olivia and Five Brothers Mountain, this elevation belongs to the mountainous system of “Sierra de Sorondo”. It was baptized “La Cloche” by Luis F. Martial´s expedition, due to its peculiar bell shape (“le cloche”, in French).

Like the other circuits, runners will cross several mountain passages until they start their return to the city, obtaining in their descent unique views of the Beagle Channel and Ushuaia´s privileged position at the End of The World.

ELT is a course that goes through similar landscapes than the 50km race (LCT), in the midst of the wild nature that characterizes the Argentinian Patagonia.

In this race you will come across trails, mountain passages and paths laid out over very different terrains. You will be able to appreciate the famous Cortez Mountain and Middle Hill, among other emblematic elevations of the area, all sprinkled with the colors of autumn (such as Carabajal Valley). On your return to Ushuaia, you will enjoy a fabulous descent and get a surprising view of the surroundings of the city and the Beagle Channel.

GUSTAVO SANTOS, TOURISM MINISTER OF THE ARGENTINE NATION.

ALL THE LOCAL SUPPORT:

The initiative is strongly supported by local authorities, in the understanding of the importance of the event AS A TRUE STATE POLICY FOR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT.

This was repeatedly stated at the press conference held on Tuesday, November 20th, 2018, by the highest authorities of the Province and the Municipality, whose unconditional support has allowed the initiative to succeed: Rosana Bertone, Governor of Tierra del Fuego and Walter Vuoto, Major of the City of Ushuaia.

IN LINE WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF GUARANTEEING AN EVENT OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY AND SAFETY, THE COURSES OF THE RACE HAVE BEEN VALIDATED BY UTMB® INTERNATIONAL.

A scouting in Ushuaia was carried out from November 19th to 23rd, 2018. On that occasion, experts assessed both the technical characteristics of the races, as well as aspects related to infrastructure, safety and medical assistance.

International elite runners participated in the RECCE, specially summoned to test the courses. Among them, were Chico Santos, from Brazil, and Santos Gabriel Rueda, from Argentina.

USHUAIA BY UTMB® ADS A NEW PLATINUM SPONSOR AND TWO GOLD SPONSORS:

The organizers of the event have recently closed a strategic agreement with Columbia Sportswear (the recognized leading company in apparel and outdoor products), the same sponsor of the UTMB® MONT-BLANC.

Furthermore, two well known sponsors have also joined this venture: LATAM and Arakur Resort & Spa

“The safety of the participants is the number one priority for any event organizer. Thus, the organizer of Ushuaia by UTMB® will implement the same tracking system of the runners and the medical software that we use in the UTMB® MONT BLANC: LiveTrail® and Logicoss®”.

MICHEL POLETTI, FOUNDER AND CO-DIRECTOR OF THE UTMB® MONT BLANC.

“The quality of the service that we will provide, the quality of service that our province and our city has and what we are going to create with this event, it will represent a before and after that will transcend us”.

"As organizers, we have the opportunity to follow the runners live. There are two very good applications that we are working on, that are Logicoss and Livetrail. Logicoss® is a platform that tells us how the runner is at all times. Livetrail® is a live tracking system for the participant. We will know, every time a runner passes through our checkpoints, what average speed he/she is going and when we should wait its arrival. For us, race organizers, it will change our reality, because we will be constantly monitoring where the runner is and controlling its development”.

THE SECOND EDITION OF THIS RACE WILL BE IN NOVEMBER 28-30, 2019.

Oman has the highest and most diverse mountain range in Arabia and is considered a must-see destination by National Geographic and Lonely Planet.

The creation of this competition generated great interest among elite athletes. By 2018, the event offered to explore the incredible terrains of the Hajar Mountains, including a section near Jebel Akhdar. The main test, of 137 km, included an altimetry of 7,800 meters.

For the 2019 edition, the organizer has already announced that a longer route of 100 miles will be drawn, which will include the highest peak in Arabia, Jabal Shams.

GAOLIGONG BY UTMB® (CHINA):

UTMB® INTERNATIONAL HAS ANNOUNCED THAT GAOLIGONG BY UTMB® WILL CELEBRATE ITS SECOND EDITION IN MARCH 21 - 23, 2020.

The UTMB® test in Gaoligong premiered in March 2018 and had 1,815 runners from 23 different countries.

RECENTLY, UTMB® INTERNATIONAL ALSO

CREATED A SUBSIDIARY IN NORTH AMERICA.

The intention is to support, in a short or medium term,

the creation of a great international event in this

subcontinent.

Trail running originated, in fact, in the US, before

growing on a large scale in Europe and then in Asia.

An official announcement on this matter is expected

very soon.
