What to do:• Create two or three interesting powerpoint slides about a

protist and give a 2-3 minute presentation!• Include:

– A picture of your protist – What kind of a protist it is and what structures it has– Where it lives– What it eats– How it interacts with its environment and it’s impact on

humans– Anything else unusual about it

• Your sources of information

• BONUS – a cool YouTube video showing your protist in action (max length that can be shown in class 30s)

Foraminifera• The Foraminifera, ("hole bearers") or

forams for short, are a large group of amoeboid protists with reticulating pseudopods, fine strands of cytoplasm that branch and merge to form a dynamic net.[1] They typically produce a test, or shell, which can have either one or multiple chambers, some becoming quite elaborate in structure.[2] These shells are made of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or agglutinated sediment particles. About 275,000 species are recognized, both living and fossil. They are usually less than 1 mm in size, but some are much larger, and the largest recorded specimen reached 19 cm.

Forams• Modern forams are primarily marine, although some can

survive in brackish conditions.[10] They are most commonly benthic, and about 40 morphospecies are planktonic.[1] This count may however represent only a fraction of actual diversity, since many genetically discrepant species may be morphologically indistinguishable.[11]

Foraminifera: A type of sarcodina (animal-

like)

• Single celled, 1mm• Secretes a shell – Calcium carbonate

• Psuedopods stick out of holes– Move after their prey!– Eat phytoplankton like dinoflagellates

• Live in the ocean– Benthic and planktonic

Fossil forams

Forams are stars!

• When they grow – they leave their shell behind– Create sand• 1 g of sand = 50,000 foram shells

– Create limestone deposits• Useful for determining how old a

rock is• Seeing changes due to global

warming
