Primary Newsletter Number 12: Wednesday, 7 th August 2019 © The Rockhampton Grammar School From the Head of Primary Dear Parents Congratulations to Kim and Pete Coonan. They are expecting their second child in late January 2020. Kim will continue working for the rest of this year, all going well, and will take maternity leave at the beginning of 2020. We wish them well for their happy news. Primary Drop Off Zone We are still having a few problems with our Primary Drop Off/ Pick Up Zone. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that this zone is a loading zone between the hours of 7:30am and 9am each morning and 2:30pm and 4pm each afternoon. Please do not leave your vehicle parked in this area during these times as it can disrupt the flow of traffic. When using the drop off zone, please be mindful that this is a shared zone and it is very important to drive slowly and give way to students waiting to cross on the pedestrian crossings. New Student We would like to welcome Noah Vindenes and his family to the school. Noah has started in Prep K. ‘Matilda’ Secondary School Musical The secondary school musical ‘Matilda’ opens this weekend at the Pilbeam Theatre. If you haven’t already purchased your tickets, you can purchase them from the Pilbeam Theatre or online at: www.seeitlive.com.au It is shaping up to be an excellent show with tickets selling fast. It would be wonderful if you could support this school event. Minniecon & Burke Tennis Competition The annual Minniecon and Burke Primary Tennis competition for students in 4 to 6 will commence next Monday, 12 th August. The draw for the competition has been posted on the notice boards outside Mrs Whitehead’s room, Mr Kelland’s room, the year 6 classrooms and Mrs Robertson’s room. Please make sure that you are on time and organised for your games. Drought & Flood Relief Mrs Sandra Brady has been in contact with the Longreach School of Distance Education (LSODE) who have approximately 100 students from Kindy to Year 10, living on properties from Birdsville to Kynuna, Corfield to Aramac to Alpha and Quilpie. For some students, their classroom is more than twice the size of Victoria. We understand the children would appreciate stationery items such as textas, pencils, biros, coloured pencils, A4 exercise books – blue lined, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3-4 lines, highlighters, large scrap books, pencil cases, USB sticks, erasers and rulers. If you are able to donate any of these items, they can be left in Mrs Brady’s classroom (P9) and she will deliver them to Longreach during the September school holidays. Regards Mr Geoff Hadwen Head of Primary

Congratulations Congratulations to Alexander Connell who has made the Capricornia Tennis Team.

Brisbane International Tennis Competition Congratulations to Toby Rowland, Alexis Rogers, Lenny Maclean-Booysen and Riley Hansen on winning their tennis matches in Gladstone yesterday. They will now travel to Brisbane in January 2020 to compete in the Brisbane International Tennis Competition.

Capras Cup On Saturday 27th July, the U/10 Rugby League Team competed in the Capras Cup at Rugby Park against 9 other schools. Over the course of the day, RGS played four games and with four wins we made it to the final against Frenchville. After a tremendous game, we emerged victorious. Our journey, however, doesn’t end here. On the 31st August, our team will play against the Yeppoon champions, Sacred Heart, in the curtain-raiser to the Capras game at Browne Park. Kurt Lynch was the team captain, but the role was shared at different times. All of the team played amazingly well, but Harry Wright was named Player of the Carnival. We wouldn’t have been as successful in the Carnival if it weren’t for our fantastic coaches, Mr Milburn and Mr Hadwen. We would also like to thank our parents and fellow Grammarians for their awesome support.

Touch Football The Touch Football season will commence this Saturday 10 August at the Cyril Connell Fields with games starting at 8am. Team lists, coaches, training times and game times have been emailed out to all concerned. If you did not receive an email, please contact Elizabeth Donaldson or Linda Irwin. If your child is unavailable for their game, please email their coach as soon as possible. Mrs Elizabeth Donaldson and Mrs Linda Irwin

Year 1 Fairytales This term, Year Ones are immersed in the wonderful fantasy world of fairytales. Each week, a different fairytale is the focus text. This week we read ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The children of 1S then took on the role of Goldilocks and thought about how they would write a letter to the bears, apologising for Goldilock’s behaviour.
