Principal’s Report Week 3 is upon us already. NAPLAN testing will be conducted this week for years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from Tuesday to Thursday. NAPLAN is a national testing program which provides schools with student performance data in numeracy and literacy. This testing provides information on students’ abilities, so we are able to explicitly target areas requiring improvement. I would ask all students to participate in this program. Mr Ryall from Ariah Park Hardware has kindly donated a set of AFL goal posts for the primary playground. They are a portable set that should satisfy the needs of our young footballers. A huge ‘thank you’ goes to Mr Ryall. Plans for the new Industrial Arts building are under negotiation. We have received a draft plan which I will take to the P&C on Tuesday. So far it looks good. As part of the National Partnership program a teaching position has been established for the remainder of the year to support literacy and numeracy programs K-10. This position will also support the national curriculum development for 2014. ordinator). Donation envelopes will be sent home with NEXT week's newsletter so everyone has the opportunity to donate to this great cause. Mrs Dunn SRC Co-ordinator

Secondary News Major Secondary Excursion Despite having 22 expressions of interest we have had a slow start of payments for this excursion and have therefore extended the closing date for the first instalment until Friday, 24th May. As detailed last term, the cost is yet to be finalised but for this number of students will be no more than $430. Students need to have the $80 deposit in by the end of Week 4 in order to book their place. A payment plan can be put in place for parents who would like to pay off the required amount in instalments. We will follow up with the final costing as soon as we can determine the actual number of students attending, otherwise the excursion cannot go ahead. Mrs Drumore Note: As a refresher, the excursion details (as published in Week 5 Term 1 newsletter have been reprinted below: “Expression of Interest – Major Secondary Excursion 2013 (Wollongong) Ariah Park Central School is currently organising an excursion to Wollongong for three nights and four days which will take place in term 4 2013. Students will be staying at The Tops Conference Centre, Bendena Garden, Stanwell Tops. Activities include Surf School, Mt Kiera day walk, a day at Jamberoo Recreation and Water Park and shopping. Due to

the cost of the excursion ($400 for 22 students, $435 for 15 students of $470 for 10 students) an expression of interest is required before a final figure can be obtained and the excursion to be confirmed. You will find this expression of interest note at the back of this newsletter. Please fill this out and return school ASAP. Also please note that, upon confirmation that the excursion will go ahead, an $80 non-refundable deposit will be required. Costings are calculated on the basis of numbers and therefore if one or two drop out after these costings are done, the figures are no longer correct which results in a financial loss to the school. Note: A payment plan for the excursion will be available for the balance of the excursion cost. Mr Stevens” Lake Arbortree Excursion Nearly all secondary students participated in the Lake Arbortree Excursion at the end of last term to gain a taste of the demands of a hiking-style walk. Students enjoyed the activities, which included camp cooking, fire building, drama games, water activities (of which the mud fight was the highlight) and sleeping out, though some students did discover that walking with a heavy pack was not for them! We thank all staff involved in organising and supervising this event to make it so much fun. Mrs Drumore GATS Sydney Excursion Last Monday and Tuesday, three students participated in a Teen Writing Masterclass in Sydney. Kayne Gordon,

along with Adam and Matthew Prentice, worked with other students under the tutelage of author, Ursula Dubosarsky. On Monday, they looked at planning, structuring and continuing a story, whilst on Tuesday they were challenged to plan and begin their own novella. Our students impressed the author with their creativity and willingness to apply themselves to the tasks. They also enjoyed themselves using public transport and viewing some of the sights of Sydney. Mrs Drumore Uniform Jumper Just a quick reminder that the school uniform jumper is a plain black polar fleece or knit jumper with a half or full zip and the school crest. Hoodies and jumpers with other colours or designs are not permitted. The school rain jacket (black one with yellow detail) is encouraged for cold or wet weather. If families are having difficulty affording correct uniform, please contact the Principal to discuss assistance. On those occasions where your child's uniform is still in the wash / can't be discovered etc, please provide an explanatory note. Uniform this year has generally been excellent and we thank the parent uniform committee for their efforts in this regard. Mrs Drumore

Primary News AASC (Active After-school Communities) Active After-school Communities will run on two afternoons this term from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm on Wednesdays and

Thursdays, if there is enough participation from primary students. This Australian Government program is run by the Australian Sports Commission and provides opportunities for primary school children to participate in free sport and other structured physical activity, after school. The program aims to engage traditionally inactive children in sport and other structured physical activities and through a positive and fun experience develop a love of sport that inspires them to join a local sporting club. To ensure children can take advantage of this excellent opportunity, we encourage parents to allow them to participate for the full hour and to pick them up after the program concludes. This term, we will be running lawn bowls as our activity. Bowls is a great sport for children of all ages and abilities to play. Girls can play against boys, odd numbers are easily accounted for and most importantly, ability is no barrier for participation. Everyone can get involved and enjoy the skill and precision of lawn bowls. Bowls is a great sport for children of all ages and abilities to play. If you are interested in your child/children participating in AASC this term please fill in the Expression of Interest at the end of this newsletter. In next week’s newsletter there will be the Consent Form which will need to be completed. If you would like further information on the AASC program please contact Mr Radnidge at school.
