PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As we begin another academic year all of us are aware that things in the country and the world are not what they ought to be. Our world is not ideal. We are aware that even in our surroundings there are things that need to change. But how are we to bring about changes? At the outset one gets the impression that with increase of gadgets we are unable to relate to the outside world and we have become alienated. There are another set of people though desire to work for change are afraid to work for it because of consequences. What is going to happen? What will be the impact of our actions? – are questions raised. It is in this context the college feels proud of the initiatives of the eco-club of the college. They have already been for a meet of the Brahut Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and have submitted a memorandum on the unhygienic conditions of Doddagundi and the area around the college. Doddagundi is our neighbourhood. The garbage around the place is causing a lot of health problems for the people there. Mosquitoes are on the increase. There are deaths and several people of the slum often are found sick. Basic amenities that are required for a human living are not there. As people studying next to the area we cannot evade responsibility by ignoring the existence of the problem of the slum around. There are more things to be done by various associations of the college for them. Last year we had a small group of four school drop outs preparing for their SSLC under the guidance of the college. There is a need to take up those classes again for other students. Children from the slums do not have computer literacy. We could bring them to the computer centre of the college during holidays and offer short courses. There are many things we could do to make the people of the neighbourhood as our neighbours. While we cannot take responsibility for everything there on the other hand we cannot remain unconcerned. What is important for us as a college is to make choices, based on an assessment of the range of problems to intervene in ways large or small to make a difference. We cannot live isolated lives. Let your light shine is the motto of the college. Every Aloysian should learn to take responsibility not merely for “self” but to those less privileged than us. And that should begin with our neighbourhood. As we begin the year the real challenge to every Aloysian is why do I evade responsibility? And then ponder how one will take responsibility to people beyond self to make the world a better place. Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto SJ EDITORIAL BOARD Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto SJ, Principal Fr. MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF ST. ALOYSIUS DEGREE COLLEGE

cOllege WelcOMes THe FirsT Year sTUDenTsThe first year students were welcomed with a three day orientation programme that began on 15th June 2016. Led by Sri Santosh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce, the three days were action-filled. Students were made aware on the vision and mission of the college. Through slides, documentaries, presentations and discussions, they were made known of the three aspects of formation here – academic excellence, social concern and humanism. Besides the members of the Staff, there were experts from outside to guide the programme. We offer you some comments on the programme.

Ms. amisha, Human resource trainer addressing the students“We were very eager to see our new college and meet new teachers and friends. During these three days 15th, 16th and 17th, we gained a lot about the college and also about the rules and regulations. The addresses of Mr. Deepak and Ms. Amisha were oriented towards the physical, psychological and spiritual growth. They also focused on the duties of students to help the poor and needy. Their sessions boosted our self confidence and helped us realize our uniqueness and dream bigger. We learnt that it is our responsibility to take good care of the environment and the society that we live in. (Sr. Sonia)

Ms. Subhashini, assistant Professor of Commerce interacting with a group

“The orientation programme was inspiring. All the speakers were great motivators. We were indeed mesmerized by the life history of Mrs. Amisha. Also, the interaction with Mr. Deepak was very fruitful and motivated all the students. The 5 Ws as stated by Mr. Santhosh was inspiring and I recount it every day. The 5 Ws are: Who, what, when, where and why. Our seniors were also very cooperative and motivating. They induced us to join the NSS, NCC, Sports, Culturals and Academic activities. I truly believe that this college will make tremendous contribution to our career and life.” (Aishwarya C)

“I was a bit nervous and fearful on the first day as I entered the college. I was made to feel comfortable. While Ms. Anisha made us to reflect on the purpose of our lives, Deepak enlightened us on our rudeness to planet earth. I thank the college for the great experience”. (Vishnu Kumar K)

“The orientation made me feel that I have chosen the best college for education. The Manager welcomed us and spoke about education in the college. I liked the presentation of the senior students inviting us to join different associations and benefit from them.” (Eranna)

Be concerned on the environment – Sri deepak, an environmental activist

“ I was inspired by the teachers during the orientation. I liked the beautiful grounds. The message I carried from the orientation is, “don’t ask for change but be the change”. (J. Kumar)

“When I finished my PUC I was told college will be unlike the school. Nobody will care for you. But after spending three days of orientation I am very surprised. Teachers care here”. (Megha)

“This College provides all help to develop talents. I was happy to hear about NSS, NCC, Cultural activities and other activites. I am happy to be in this college”. (Gomathi)

“ It does not hurt to be nice”. That is the message that was offered by Ms. Amisha that made an impression on me. She is the finest person that I have met. I would like to live that message. (Abraham A)

“ I had come to the college with a different mind-set. The three days were very motivational and I have changed. The life of St. Aloysius was very inspiring. (Mark Alexander)

“I liked the cleanliness of the college. The place is well maintained. Classrooms are big. There is greenery around.” (Abdul Hannan)

“I thought I would be lonely when I came over to the college. The small group interactions made me feel that I belong to a family.” (Manish. V)

ParenTs MeeTThe parents of the newly admitted students were invited on 17th June for an interaction with the teachers and the management of the college. Fr. Vinoo Fabian, the Manager of the College welcomed the parents. He urged them to be partners in education and explained the choice-based credit system. Our resource person was Sr. Leonie. She

He asked all the students to come out from their comfort zone and light a lamp instead of cursing darkness. He spoke on the need to become instruments of change by letting go. The celebration witnessed its culmination with the vote of thanks by Miss. Sharanya. (Sr. Evitta Thomas, III BA).

students to be informed about the current human-made environmental disasters around the globe and their local surroundings. Apart from creating awareness among the masses the club has initiated various campaigns to ensure the protection of our environment. The Eco Club is established under the NSS (National Service Scheme) to ensure that all the activities are recognized, perpetual and significant. The focus of the Eco Club is on local issues such as the garbage crisis, lake pollution, air pollution, town planning, poverty, sustainable development and governance. The students are committed towards creating awareness through creative methods and interactions such as street plays, music and art. Our campaigns to address these issues are designed to be legal, systematic and effective.

Vijay K, Charan C, Dennis, Prasanna C, and Kevin the students of 1st B.Com, were the first few enthusiastic students who actively pursued some issues such as dumping of garbage outside our campus, non functional street lights, mosquito menace caused by the polluted storm water drain(Raja Kaluve) and public health of our neighbours. The students prepared a memorandum with the above mentioned grievances and presented it to the BBMP Commissioner, during the Bengaluru Mahanagar Samithi conducted by the DSS (Dalit Sangharsha Samithi) in the presence of Mavalli Shankar(President of the DSS Bangalore), other dignitaries and two thousand spectators at Town Hall. We are proud of our budding activists and their proactive will, to address such issues for the betterment of our society.

THeaTre OF THe OPPresseDKeeping with its tradition of taking students beyond the regular studies, St. Aloysius Degree College encourages its students to participate and reflect on personal and social issues. With this intention theatre classes were introduced in the college from the last semester. However, the theatre workshop was more experimental during the last semester. This semester the theatre programme became more regular and number of students also increased from 15 in the last semesters to 36 in the current semester.

The objectives of the workshops are as follows:

To orient the students about the basic theatre skill-• acting, voice modulation and use of space.

To enable the students to script and perform street • plays on social issues.

To make the students come out of their shyness and • interact with their peers and audience with more confidence.

To understand their own biases and insecurities.•

Learning theatre skill to understand issues of social • concern ranging from issues on gender, child labour, problems of the slum dwellers, health, sanitation and other issues.

To engage the students in discussion after the • performance with the peers and audience.

The students were first oriented about theatre techniques to understand theatre through games and activities. Students also got involved in group discussion to identify issues relating to their lives and the immediate society. Later, the students were also asked to observe spaces, like colleges, tea stalls, family, government spaces to understand how different actors play role in those spaces, the role of power, caste and gender in different spaces. They came back and performed what they observed with their peers. Following this they also discussed issues and matters to have an in-depth understanding.

In the next phase, students performed plays depicting stories from their own experiences in life. E.g. in one of the plays, the students depicted their visit to the BESCOM office to complain about the poor condition of street lights in their locality. In most places the street lights were not working and repeated complain by the slum dwellers failed to draw the attention of the BESCOM officials. In another play they portrayed how in the same institutional set up different rules are applicable for different people depending on their status and position in the institution.

The inspiration of theatre has been drawn from Brazilian theatre artist Augusto Boal’s concept of „Forum Theatre or „The Theatre of the Oppressed’ where the performers are also organic part of their play. They are not separate entity and their theatre is not borrowed from outside, they are not performing from books, rather their theatre talks about their own problems and the problems faced by their immediate society or pressing issues of the country. (Subroto Dey, Assistant Professor of Social Work)

“I hereby affirm that I will faithfully serve as member of the Students’ Council of St. Aloysius Degree College, act in accordance with the Constitution of the Council, and fulfill all duties and responsibilities required of the Students’ Council. I will, to the best of my ability, strive to achieve the high level of expectations and work for the welfare of the students. Let your light shine is the motto of the college. Grant me the grace O God to live by the motto” was the oath. Once the oath was pronounced the college choir sang the college anthem.

dance team of the college welcomes Sri Brijesh Kalappa, dr. (Fr.) Elmar from austria and others

The Chief Guest then began his address with an autobiographical note. A third class in SSLC admitted to St. Joseph’s College, he said, he was able to obtain a rank and now be an advocate of the Supreme Court. While paying a tribute to the Principal and the college for commitment to the weaker sections, he advised the representatives to become aware of the world around – local, national and global. He asked them not to be silent at the injustice around but to work for changes even if they are small changes.

Fr. Vinoo Fabian before asking for God’s blessings on the Council spoke on the qualities of a leadership.

leadership is action, not position a leader leads by example not by Force.

remember the difference between a boss and a leader; a boss says “Go!” - a leader says “let’s go!”

in his prayer for the council, he said.“ Leadership is hard to define. Lord, let us be the ones to define it with justice.

Leadership is like a handful of water. Lord, let us be the people to share it with those who thirst.

Leadership is not about watching and correcting. Lord, let us remember it is about listening and connecting.

Leadership is not about telling people what to do. Lord, let us find out what people want.

Leadership is less about the love of power and more about the power of love.

Lord, as we continue to undertake the role of leader let us be affirmed by the servant leadership.

Let our greatest passion be compassion. Our greatest strength love.

Our greatest victory the reward of peace. In leading let us never fail to follow. In loving let us never fail.”

The function ended with the vote of thanks and national anthem. ( Milton, II B. A.)

dr. (Fr.) Elmar Mitterstieler SJ animating the session on “universal spirituality”

The Staff members of the college attended a workshop by Dr. Elmar Mitterstieler SJ from Austria and Dr. Alangaram SJ from Chennai on Universal Spirituality on 15th July from 2.00 p.m. Fr. Elmar is a spiritual guide in Vienna with several publications to his credit to help people to re-discover the rivers of life. At the core of every human being, Dr. Elmar explained the struggles for life and death. Signs of death in human hearts are guilt, hate, fear, negative attitudes, lack of openness, anxiety, hurts, diffidence and other elements hampering life. However these forces are not as powerful as made out to be for one who desires life. Self can be a source of life, self as different from ego. One who finds self finds the source of life. Self is all about recognizing one’s life as a gift, feeling trustworthy, joyful and concerned.

There is no life without feelings. One needs to discern to become aware of what is happening to self. Ego can be selfish but cannot be in peace if it is not in consonance with self. The enemy within is not as mighty as self. One obtains peace when one is able to search one’s depth. The presentation ignited minds and there were issues highlighted about self and the world outside, the context of self and the world. It was a wonderful experience.
