Mrs. Brown was recognized for her talent and passion for helping her students learn about becoming good citizens of our country and community and for helping them practice caring in her class. We’re so proud of you, Mrs. Brown! Congratulations to all our third, fourth and fifth graders who have qualified as members of the Principal’s Math Club as well. Math Club members earn the honor of having their names announced on the Friday announcements and posted on a bulletin board as well as receiving a certificate and having their names entered into a drawing for a free ice cream on Fridays. Students qualify by memorizing their times tables to 10s (3 rd ), 12s (4 th ) and for multiplication AND division to 12s (5 th ). Please encourage your child to “go for it” and learn his/her facts. Students in K-2 can also try out for the Principal’s Math Club by mastering their addition and subtraction facts. Timed tests are given in the MegaLab whenever students are ready for them. Math fact fluency is critical to students’ success in math in all grades, so your help with their practice is encouraged and appreciated! 02/26 – K-IMAX 3/01 - SAC Meeting 3:15 pm **FSA Writes 4&5 Grades 5 th Grade Speech Contest 1:30-2:45 pm 3/03- 5 th Grade Tropicana Speech Contest 1:15-1:45 pm *Character Counts-“Caring” 9:15 am 3/08 – Whitney Lab-Mr. Eggleston’s Class 3/10-Whitney Lab- Mrs. Corbett’s Class ***SPRING PHOTOS*** 3/10- Pre-Registration for Kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year- 1:00-5:00 PM 3/11- AR CAFÉ 3/13-Daylight Savings Time Set clock forward 1 hour 3/15 –Whitney Lab-Ms. Sugrue’s Class **2 nd & 3 rd Grades “Lion King” Amphitheatre ** 5 th Grade - Stem Fair 6-7:00 pm 3/17- Whitney Lab- Ms. Mehanna’s Class *Puberty Education 3/18- PLANNING DAY—NO SCHOOL Principal’s Message **VERY IMPORTANT!! Regarding Hardship Waiver Process We hope that this letter finds you and your child(ren) enjoying a successful school year. The purpose of this letter is to provide updated and new information regarding the Hardship out of Zone Waiver process. If you already have at least one child on an approved 2015-16 Out of Zone Hardship Transfer waiver, or, if you feel you have a hardship that would prevent your child from achieving success at their zoned school, the following process applies. If you have a child on an approved 2015-16 Out of Zone Hardship, this waiver will expire at the end of this school year. At that time, your child will be reassigned to your zoned school for the 2016-17 school year. If you would like your child to remain at the out of zone school he/she is currently attending, you must apply for an Out of Zone Hardship waiver again. The request may only be approved if your reason meets the criteria for a hardship. Rising twelfth grade students in Aberdeen who are already enrolled at Creekside High, may again remain, if they submit an Out of Zone Hardship Transfer Application. Additionally, rising sixth graders who are presently enrolled in “Crookshank-at-Sebastian” may remain at Sebastian, if they submit an Out of Zone Hardship Transfer Application. Transportation is NOT provided for these exceptions. A student may be granted an Out of Zone Hardship transfer when a condition or situation exists that implies an adverse or compelling circumstance, or a state of misfortune unique to that student’s life or a family’s life situation. In this case, you must complete a Hardship Out of Zone Application, and submit it for approval to School Services. The transfer request process will begin on February 12, 2016. You will have until April 30, 2016 to submit your request. The sooner your application is received, the sooner your child’s class schedule for next school year may be completed. If applicable to your reason for request, please be sure to mention that you are applying for the “grandfathered” condition for your fifth, eighth, or twelfth grade child when completing the Out of Zone Application. Your prompt attention to submitting an application will assist your school in preparing to meet requirements for state and federal funding, class size compliance, and other governmental and administrative applications. The application is available in both an electronic version (available February 12th on our website) and a paper version. Both applications and the directions for the process can be found on our district website at: http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/depts/os/schoolserv/transfers. Additionally, please note that transportation will not be provided to students who receive an approved out of zone waiver.

PLEASE, if you need to change the way your child goes home in the afternoon,

PLEASE call before 2:30 pm or 1:30 pm on Wednesdays.

IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON’T CALL AFTER THIS TIME. IT’S A VERY BUSY TIME IN THE OFFICE. Thank you for understanding.

With cold and flu season being in full swing, please encourage your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer. If your child becomes ill, please do not send him/her to school until he/she has been fever free for 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol or Advil-type products. Together we can keep Hartley healthy! Also, continue to check your child/children for head lice.

Standardized tests Choose to do well

True or false: standardized tests are tough. The answer depends on how prepared your youngsters are. Here are four ways to help him handle test week:

1. Explain that the test will show how much he has learned. Encourage him to try his best, but don’t put so much emphasis on them that he feels stressed.

2. Practice the test format. For example, your child might have to read a paragaph and answer questions. Using one of his textbooks, have him look at the questions at the end of a section first and then read the passage. That will help him know what to read for and how to find the answers.

3. Limit activities the night before tests. You may want to avoid having guests for dinner or skip his brother’s baseball game if it means being out late. Be sure your child gets to bed on time and sets an alarm for the next morning.

4. On the day, give him an energy-boosting breakfast. Try to include both protein(eggs, yogurt, milk) and carbohydrates (fruit, oatmeal, toast).

SUMMER MARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM Parents, Applications for the summer Marine Science Program will be passed out by science teachers at all schools during the week of February 16th. Applications will be due back to science teacher by March 4th. Applications can also be downloaded at any time from the website prior to April 15 at http://www-grms.stjohns.k12.fl.us/ and click on the Marine Science link. The link also will have a complete day by day curriculum for each grade level, parent information, and a video from last year’s program. This summer program is available to all students currently in grades five through seven and has been sponsored by the school district since 1982. Three, eight day sessions are held at Gamble Rogers Middle School with bus transportation provided. The date for the three sessions this summer will be May 31st through June 9th, June 13th through June 23rd, and June 27th through July 8th. Small classes of 12-14 students are separated by grade level. All instructors in the program are St. Johns County School District teachers. The Marine Science Program is a carefully designed experience for responsible students who are interested in learning about our local marine environments. Learning is “hands on” in the field with students kayaking, canoeing, boating, hiking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP (stand up paddleboarding), etc. Specific grade level activities and curriculum are attached to the applications and are also available from the website. More information about the program can be had by emailing John Gordon at [email protected].

Congratulations to our WONDERFUL

Student Council members for all their hard work for S.A.F.E. Also, to ALL our TERRIFIC families for donating food, blankets, etc… to help the needy pets of our community.

FASTT Math

Program: Knowing basic math facts is

a key to success in higher-level

mathematics. As part of our

math program, your student is

using software called FASTT

Math Next Generation to help

learn and use basic math facts.

This program was purchased

for three (3) years by the

school using funds from the

Booster-thon. Students will

have access to the program at

all times even during the

summer months.

Each student works on his

or her own learning path. The

program determines which

facts a student cannot answer

correctly in less than one

second and provides

instruction in only those

facts. Once a student can

answer a fact correctly in

about one second, he or she

practices to get faster.
