Year 12’s Final Week of School
Year 12 had a memorable final week of school. It commenced with the traditional Newcastle High School clap out.
For students this signals the beginning of the realisation that 13 years of schooling is coming to an end. For some,
it was all too much and the tears began to flow.

Sadness quickly turned to celebration, with the formal at Rydges Hotel on the foreshore. It is always interesting to
see the transformation from school students one day, to glamourous young men and women the next. It is also
nice to see the family members involved in festivities, with a mighty hour and a half pre dinner photo session. Par-
ents would be proud to know how their child behaved during the evening: there was a great spirit of inclusivity,
respect and fun. I was going to challenge some of the boys to a dance off, but my knee brace prevented this: Mrs
Myers did her best to represent me.

And finally the last day of school arrived with a formal assembly and a light lunch. A time to celebrate individual
student achievements, tinged with sadness at finally leaving the cosy blanket of familiar Newcastle High School
routines.
Use this study time wisely and optimise your outcomes. But remember, as I’ve said before, the HCS isn’t everything.
One exam does not measure your worth and there is more than one way to reach your goals. On behalf of the NHS
community, I wish our departing Year 12s every success in their futures.

On the 13th of June, the NHS U/15s AFL team travelled to Tulkaba Park in Teralba to compete in the Swan Shield
Gala Day. The team defeated the AFL powerhouses of the Hunter who turned up with strong teams from Maitland
Grossman and Lambton High. The standout players on the day included Josh Taylor, Riley Parker, Beau Dwyer, Jack
Wright, Jack Watkins, Zai Michals and Cooper Southam. The Newcastle boys were simply too good as they played
excellent footy, fought hard and demonstrated high quality teamwork. A big thank you to Memphis Pearse, Darcy
Tuntevski, and Matt Lewis for their efforts goal umpiring on the day.
The final was then set to be played at Feighan Oval on the 4th of July against Hunter Spots High. Being a selective
sports school, Hunter Sports were always going to be a difficult challenge for the Newy boys. Coaches, Mr Doherty
and Callan Fowler, were assisted by Mr Carswell whose main role on the day was collecting the real coaches coffee
orders. After some uplifting and inspirational words from the coaching staff, Newcastle High took the field. The
team put in a gutsy effort against a team who had noticeably large, quick and agile players. On the day, Patrick
Bond along with Cooper Southam, Riley Parker, Zai Michals and Josh Taylor all played magnificently. Unfortunately
the boy’s strong effort wasn’t quite enough as they were outplayed with size and skill. To the boys’ credit and in
typical NHS style, they never gave up and left nothing out on the field.
A massive thankyou to Mr Doherty, Mr Fowler and Mr Carswell for their contribution to the team!
