The next three weeks for your diary TERM 2 WEEK 3 2017
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dwayne Hopwood Principal
It’s hard to believe that we are already one third of the way through the term! With the changing weather the boys will need a winter uniform if this has not already been organised. These are still available through the uniform shop as the full transition to Lowes is still in progress. Even after 26 years as a teacher the metabolism of teenage boys is still a mystery to me with many opting to wear shorts in July and jumpers in February. The NAPLAN tests were completed this week and the boys are to be commended for the mature way in which they approached these. When we receive the results later in the year we will forward these to parents.

ASHFIELD FIRE STATION MURAL PROJECT
A select group of Year 8 Visual Arts students attended Ashfield Fire Station to present the mural they completed last term. The fire fighters were extremely impressed by the enthusiasm, commitment and artistic talent of our students. The boys were able to spend time exploring the station and talking to the fire fighters about the amazing work they do for our community. Thank you Ashfield Fire Brigade!

YEAR 8 STEM PROJECT
On Tuesday Year 8 continued their 2017 STEM project based around rollercoasters. This week, teams were constructing a ‘trial’ rollercoaster based upon the outcomes of their experiments in last week’s STEM session. All teams completed a session on 3D printing and Google sketch up to enable them to start designing their 3D starter gate. Teams worked steadily throughout the day and are now up to drawing some possible design ideas for their final group project. Once again a busy and engaging day! Linda Henry Deputy Principal

WHAT ANGLE IS THAT DAB?
What is the 'Dab' dance and why are sport stars dabbing when they celebrate? The invention of the dab has been credited to Migos, a rap group from Atlanta, US. However, it
was brought to popularity by Cam Newton, a player in the American football team, the Carolina
Panthers. He was crowned by the crowds as the 'dab daddy' as it is his signature move on the
sport field. Other sporting stars caught on to this movement and also do the dab to celebrate.
Students of 7 White practised measuring angles formed by the dabs that famous people did. They
constructed a triangle in each dab picture and used a protractor to measure the angles.
What angle makes a dab look best?

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS PHOTOSHOP EXERCISE WITH YEAR 10 VISUAL ARTS
Year 10 students have started a new in–class assessment. Students are to take photographs of themselves and each other using the school iPads and manipulate their photographs using Photoshop. Students will explore several different tools and techniques in Photoshop when morphing their images. It was a great lesson with the iPads and students had fun taking interesting photos of themselves and each other. This lesson, we spent half of it taking the photographs on the iPads then the second half in the computer room starting our first photographic manipulation. The distortion tool seemed to be the most popular at first, however, as students gained confidence more intricate Photoshop layering started to occur. Clare Easdown – Visual Arts Teacher

ASHFIELD TRUMPS ITSELF
Round one of the Year 10 debating competition saw the two Ashfield teams paired up in a peer against peer battle. The B team made up of Kelvin Huang, Vincent Li, Travis Campbell and Kavan Chan took on the might of the A Team Daniel Lahood, William Devine, Alex Hodgson and Matthew Mylrea. The entertaining debate was focused on the relevance of scripture in public schools. Over the course of the competition the boys are required to be knowledgeable and to discuss many modern and contemporary social issues. On the day the team representing the negative argument (A Team) won over the adjudicator and triumphed in a tight tussle. Next round in Week 5 this term both teams will test their mettle against the might of Sydney Boys High.
