2015 Synod Assembly—below The 2015 Synod Assembly is in the books. Our

JUNE 2015 • PRINTS OF PEACE 2
Bishop Mansholt spoke at the 2015
Synod Assembly.
Next Steps Prince of Peace took some big steps at our Spring Congregational meeting on
May 17. We named a Call Committee, which is composed of members whose names
were submitted by us all. We had over 50 names submitted. All great candidates, but
constitutionally we could only choose 6 and they are: Kris Gurholt, Sue Evers, Erin
Larson, Pat Hayes, Joel Landsverk and Andrew Skowanderson. Their first order of
business will be meeting with our Bishop Gerald Mansholt or his representatives,
choosing a chairperson and assembling information that will be helpful for the synod to
review in order to bring us the most appropriate candidates. Two of our Council
members, Mike Kalinowski and Peggy Miller-Kinderman, will serve as liaisons. Dean Gruner will help in the initial stages to
give some pointers and help them get organized and then he will step away. We should be excited about all the varied gifts,
skills, experiences and perspectives they all share. They will represent us well. Let us keep them in our prayers.
Another major event that occurred at the Spring Congregational meeting was receiving from Long Range Planning
an update of our soon-to-be-completed discernment process. This will result in a report that should be finalized very soon
(perhaps by the time you receive this) and will give us a great pulse of where we are and powerful direction on where we are
headed as a congregation in the months and years to come, as well as providing valuable input for us as we seek to call a
second pastor. Thank the members of Long Range Planning for their numerous meetings and tireless hours of work. They
are: Kerry Arnold, chair; Steve Mayer, Sue Evers, Nancy Scheuerman, Randy Bullock and Cindy Romnek. Pastor Dave
Daubert from Day 8 Strategies has helped to guide the process, but it isn’t his report. It is what the Holy Spirit has led us all
to contribute. It is our report. After it reaches its final form in a few weeks it will be turned over to Council for their prayerful
discernment, deliberation and decision-making.
Other things that await us in the coming months are: saying goodbye on Sunday, August 9 to Cheryl Davis as our
Intern. She has been such a blessing to us and the people of Our Savior’s in Neenah, and will be a great blessing to the
Church at large. Thank you so much for how you have welcomed and supported her, as she has stepped into her growing
pastoral role. It has been so much fun and such a joy working with her and seeing your interactions with her.
There is much more simmering on the back burner, but not quite ready to be served yet, such as innovative ways to
involve youth in worship, a hospitality video that we are producing, introducing a Narrative Lectionary in the fall to enable
adults and children to study the same stories of the Bible together, changes to Cindy, Gloria and Katie’s job descriptions to
align more closely with our growing and future areas of ministry, as well as saying hello to our new Choir Director, Cathy
Hewitt, who will start her ministry with us in July. Take some time to rest and refresh yourself this summer! If you are
traveling, be safe and worship as you travel. Bring back a bulletin and we’ll post it on our display boards.
Joy,
Condolences to an Old Friend In January 1976, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church sponsored Sia & Mao Vang. They were the first Hmong couple along with
their children to come to Appleton. Members of PoP, Harold and Donna Baerenwald, took care of the family by introducing
them to the area and helping Sia find a job at Borsche Roofing and later, Riverside Paper Mill. Sia Vang and his seven
children are mourning the deaths of his 97 year old mother, Ly Vang who passed away on May 3rd and his 59 year old wife,
Mao Vang who passed away on May 11th. They are asking for your prayers for strength through this difficult time and for
God’s peace.
Ly Vang’s visitation will be at Richmond Hall Hmong Funeral, 2531 N. Richmond Street in Appleton on May 30th and 31st at
9:00 a.m. Mao Vang’s visitation and funeral will be held at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond Street in Appleton at
9:00 a.m. June 13th and 14th with burial to follow on June 15th at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah.

Humanity Interfaith Build Prince of Peace is joining 14 other faith communities
in the Fox Valley to be part of the Interfaith Builds this
summer/fall. All fifteen faith communities will join together to build two homes;
one in Kimberly for the Alvizu family and one in northwest Appleton for the Vue
family. Volunteers for each work day will be a mix from the different faith
communities. Prince of Peace is scheduled to provide volunteer workers on 4 of
the work days and to provide site support on 3 days. PoP work days include August
11 & 26 and September 12 & 30; site support days include August 18, September

June is Personal Care Kit Month Lutheran World Relief is in urgent need of Personal Care Kits due to the
Nepal earthquake and other disasters in the world. Currently they have
more requests than they have kits to fill them.
When natural disaster strikes or political conflict flares, families often have
little chance to gather their belongings before fleeing the danger. They
arrive in a refugee camp or other place of safety scared, vulnerable and
dirty from the travel. The simple items included in a Personal Care Kit allow
them to wash away the dirt and sweat, with the fresh scent of soap and the
softness of a towel as reminders of someone’s care and concern for them in
their plight.
Please consider bringing the items mentioned below to church with you
some Sunday.
The items needed are Light weight bath-size towels (maximum 52” X 27”), dark color
recommended, new or gently used.
Bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping
Metal nail clippers (attached file optional)
Sturdy combs (no picks or fine toothed combs)
Adult size toothbrush
Items may be put on the white rack in the storage room behind the library.
If you prefer to give a monetary donation, please make checks payable to
WELCA, noting LWR Kits, and send to Jeannine Bultman, W6072 Cornflower
Drive, Appleton, WI 54915
Baskets of Promise—Thank you! Thank you! A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the “Baskets of Promise
Lenten Appeal” (Personal Care Kits). We collected items to make up 45
kits. Currently they have more requests from around the world than they
have kits to fill them. SO THE NEED IS GREAT.
Thank you to Karen Peckham for running the Baskets of Promise during
Lent. Also thanks to Anne Jackson and Leah Johnson for helping pack the
kits.

Christmas in August
Looking for a worthwhile project to dig into? Christmas in August is right around the corner. This is
the 20th anniversary of this program. It was organized as a way for families to experience and
teach the joy of giving, while at the same time providing a needed service in the community. This
project partners Social Concerns Ministry and Outagamie County Health and Human Services to
provide 100 area K through 8th grade children with new jeans, t-shirt, sweatshirt, haircut and
shoes so that they can start the fall school year looking good and feeling good about themselves.
Take the opportunity to shop with your children or grandchildren, knowing that the clothes they are picking out will
make a less fortunate child excited to go back to school. This worthwhile project cannot be successful without your
help and active participation. Keep an eye out for the Christmas trees in the entryways in late June. Please take an
ornament or two, purchase the item and place it back in the boxes provided with the ornament attached by August
9th OR take a cash envelope and place it in the collection plate during any service.
Call or email Nette Kimball at 920-851-4032, [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to
volunteer to help with the behind the scenes action.

that our kids are busy with during the year as they learn and
grow with Jesus. As pictures are removed from the board
they will placed outside Katie’s office for you to take.
Worship Notes Sunday School students entering grades 3-6 in the fall –
this is for you! When you attend church services this
summer, fill out an “I Attended Church Today” worship note
form and you’ll have a head start on your expectations for
the fall. The forms can be found in the bin under the
Sunday School Bulletin Board in the narthex.
See Page 4 for the list of all those who completed their
memory work for the 2014-15 Sunday School year.
Good job!
VBS Volunteer Training I will hold two VBS volunteer trainings this year. You only
need to come to ONE of them. They will be Tuesday, June 9
@ 5:30 pm or Friday, June 12 @ 4:00pm, both in the

VBS Decorating If you would like to help turn our
Church into a Science Laboratory,
join us on Friday, June 12 from
1:00pm-4:00 pm to help set up
and decorate for VBS. I will provide
some goodies for those who come to help. Contact
Katie if you can come or have any questions.
THANK YOU to Our Awesome Volunteers! We have been truly blessed to have had so many wonderful
people helping with our Sunday School program this year.
We had wonderful teams of teachers and shepherds! And
thanks to those who filled in when necessary and who
helped behind the scenes! We thank each of you for
sharing your time and experience with the children of
Prince of Peace. We had over 60 people involved this year
and I am grateful to each of you for all of your hard work!
It’s been a great year thanks to all of you! I look forward to
working with you all and maybe some new faces next year!
Sunday School Volunteers 2015-16 Sign-Up Anyone interested in signing up to help with Sunday School
for the 2015-2016 school year is invited to sign up now!
There is a clipboard in the bin on Katie’s office door. Flip to
the grade (Pre-K through 6th) you would like to help with
and sign up to be either a teacher or assistant (shepherd)
in that classroom. You also have an opportunity to work 1-
on-1 with a few kids as a Sunday School buddy. If you
would be interested in leading a 20 minute activity on
occasional Sundays in the nursery for preschoolers during
the 9:20 service, you may sign up for that, too! We even
have a separate sheet in case you would rather be on a list
of substitutes. Make a difference in the faith journey of our
PoP children—sign up to help with Sunday School TODAY!
Confirmation students—please note that shepherd
positions fill up fast, so don’t wait to sign up!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Box Tops Thank you for saving the box tops and
labels for education. The collection box is
located in the hallway above the
mailboxes across from the offices. Please
check the expiration date on the box
tops. General Mills will NOT accept box
tops that have expired.
We appreciate your support! Each box top is worth $.10 and
they add up fast. The teachers can use this money for things
not covered in their budget.
Prayer Shawls Summer Break The prayer shawl group is going on our summer
break. This doesn't mean we don't need new people
who want to knit or crochet prayer shawls. We
continue to make shawls all summer long. So if you
need a pattern or some yarn, get in touch with Pam
Christianson. We currently have 8 people making
shawls so we would appreciate anybody who would
like to help us. We meet the 2nd and the 4th
Tuesdays of the month from September through
May. Watch for an announcement in the August
newsletter when we start up again in September.
Please contact Pam at 920-540-4229 or email her
at [email protected] .
Community Clothes Closet Thank you for your generosity! Our spring collection
drive was an amazing success! We were able to
donate 200 pounds of clothing. That's 200 pounds
of business suits, shirts, shorts, pants, dresses and
shoes. Thank you for helping our neighbors in need.
God bless!
Let's Stock Up St. Joe's
Food Pantry! Did you know our congregation
lost 300 pounds in March? Well,
you would be surprised to learn
that our congregation donated 300 pounds of food
on our drive in the spring. Amazing! Let's see if we
can exceed that amount for our summer drive.
The Social Concerns Ministry team will hand out
bags on Sunday, May 31. Please fill the bag and
return it on Sunday, June 7th. If you cannot make it
to church when bags are passed out, feel free to
use any bag you have at home. You can leave the
bag in the entry way to the church. Please call or
email Nette Kimball at [email protected] or
920-851-4032 with any questions or for additional
information.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is happy to
cooperate with many churches in the Fox Cities on a
joint food pantry. St. Joseph Food Pantry was
started in 1982 and weekly distributes 30 tons of
fresh food and non-perishable items to hundreds of
men, women, children, elderly, working poor and
unemployed. Through the years, they have created
an effective system for churches and local agencies
to cooperate and care for our needy in the Fox
Cities. We are blessed to be part of this vital
network. PoP collects food each quarter. We ask
you to pray for those people in need.
Library Corner Check out these new titles
Remembering by Carol M. Barton
Carol Barton shares her life which started during the depression
years on a farm. From a one room school house she moved to a
small town during the war years, graduated and found a job in a
big city at the age of 16 and married the love of her life. God’s
plan unfolds as the Barton family of 6 leaves Appleton to become
missionaries in what was Papaua, New Guinea. Returning to the
US, they served a new ministry focus: the Lutheran Church
Extension Fund. Follow the author as she remembers her 80
years of following God’s purpose in her life.
The Thorn by Beverly Lewis
The first book in the Rose Trilogy follows two Amish sisters divided
by one sister’s impulsive marriage to an outsider. She longs for the
old ways she left behind while the other is unsure of her own heart
as she is torn between two men.
For Children
It Will Be Okay, Trusting GOD Through Fear and Change by Lysa
TerKeurst
Little Seed and Little Fox face fears, changes and brand-new
things. Do they like it? Not one bit, but the unlikely friends discover
that God is with them when things are new or frightening and that
if they trust Him, He will bring them through changes because He
loves them and in the end, it really will be okay.
Piano Needs Good Home A PoP family is looking to find a new home for their piano! It's in
good shape, but probably needs tuning. If you or your family would
like a good piano for free, contact Gloria Allhiser at

Using Your “Motivational Gifts” at Prince of Peace
Have you ever thought about spiritual gifts as “motivational
gifts?” Our gifts are the motivation behind our service. They are
the passion we feel; the energy that comes when we are acting
on something we care about. The same compassion that moved
Jesus. Spiritual gifts were never intended to be personal but
corporate. Our gifts are for the body. To serve. To build up. To fill
a need and bridge a gap. That is how God desires us to use our
gifts. To motivate and connect within and outside the Prince of
Peace walls. All members of Prince of Peace need to come
together to build the body of Christ for now and future
generations!
We encourage you to evaluate how you are serving God at this
time. Are you serving in a ministry in the church? Are you using
your spiritual gifts at a school, hospital, Habitat for Humanity,
Feed My Starving Children or some place in the community?
Search your hearts, lives and experiences to determine how God
has called you to serve Him!
Helping Hands Outreach How can we reach out to one another as Christians
this summer? Ask yourself what you can do for one
another? Helping Hands is a great outreach to
provide connections among our fellow members! Remember the next
time you or someone is in need, call one of the Helping Hands
leaders. Reach out and touch someone!
Summer Fellowship in Between Worship Services The Witness Ministry is happy to be hosting the “refreshment”
fellowship time in between worship services this summer. We will be
providing a different breakfast item each week with a good will
offering. This is a great opportunity for fellowship at Prince of Peace!
Prince of Peace Camping Weekend Join us for a relaxing weekend of camping and
fellowship! Mark your calendars for July 10-12
at Calumet County Park in Hilbert. We have
reserved campsites for members to set up their
campers for the weekend. The cost is $52.00
for the weekend. If you are not able to join us
for the overnight camping, please consider
joining us for the evening worship service and
community meal/potluck at the campground. For more information,
contact Eric & Brigetta Wingender – 460-4205 or Bob & Sarah
Koester – 470-2689.
FLAT JESUS
Flat Jesus is one of the Prince of
Peace summer take home
missions. It is a fun way for
the whole congregation,
to keep connected as a
community of faith during
the summer months.
Flat Jesus is a physical
reminder that Jesus is always
with us (Matthew 28:20), and
that we are always connected
with one another as the body
of Christ (1Corinthians 12:12-26).
What do I do with Flat Jesus? Cut out Flat Jesus,
decorate him, and take him with you during your
travels near and far (or send him to someone
else). Bring Flat Jesus to the park, library,
Brewer’s game, the Wisconsin State Fair, Door
County, etc. “Snail mail” Flat Jesus to family and
friends who live far away, or people you know
who are traveling to interesting or faraway
places.
Don’t forget to share the adventures of Flat
Jesus by emailing pictures (and stories!) to
[email protected], and look for your
photos and everyone else’s on the large Flat
Jesus display on Sunday mornings. We will also
post Flat Jesus on the PoP Facebook page. Flat
Jesus is available at the PoP “Welcome” window
in the narthex.

Imagine a home where every person feels loved, valued, and heard. Imagine a family that seeks God's
wisdom, will and Word together. Imagine an intimate, affectionate community where every night is an
experience of caring, sharing, comfort and peace. Now, imagine that this is YOUR family! Does this sound like
an impossible dream? It's not, and you can start...tonight. If you're interested in seeing how a simple nightly
"enrichual" can completely change the life of your family, talk with Gloria Allhiser or Katie Witt!
BEING FULLY PRESENT WITH YOUR CHILD (Taken from For Heaven’s Sake! Parenting Preschoolers Faithfully by Marilyn Sharpe, pp. 16-17)
Remember a person who has taken time with you, given you undivided attention, and modeled what it is to be
fully present? You probably felt valued, cared about and loved. You knew you mattered. How can we do this for
our children?
▪ Be fully attentive. Turn off the TV, radio, computer and MP3 player. Stay off the phone.
▪ Go to a quiet place, without others present.
▪ Face your child. Be on the same level. Crouch down or hold them in your lap.
▪ Look into that precious face. Look into your child’s eyes.
▪ Turn off your mind to all of the other tasks you need to remember or
accomplish. Just be there. The message your unhurried presence delivers is,
“You are important and I love you.”

Fox Valley Lutheran Homes
June 2015 “Friend-Raiser”
Linwood Place Apartments and Linwood Commons are
places that you need to check out if you’ve never been to
Fox Valley Lutheran Homes or if perhaps it’s been a long
time. YOU are invited to our June “Friend-raiser” month on
any Tuesday or Wednesday during the month of June
between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.!
You’ve all heard of fundraisers; you’re probably sick of
fundraisers. This is different! We want you to come, see
our facility, meet the staff, meet some of our tenants, and
become a friend. If you’d like to volunteer, we have a
variety of ways in which you could help us, from skilled
computer and office work, to answering the door and
phones, to visiting with tenants, playing games and more.
Talk to Becky Luett for more information.
