Dear Parents, 

Welcome to the beginning of an exciting new school year. Serving 

as the school¶s principal is an honor and a pleasure. I look forward 

to working with you to provide your child a wonderful school experience this year.

We are a school steeped in the tradition of offering a world 

class educational experience for your child. We are proud of our

longstanding record of being a high performance school. Oak Street

Academy provides many engaging and innovative learning opportunities

for our entire school community. A variety of teaching strategies

ensures that individual learning styles are addressed and talents of 

all students are celebrated. Our weekly seminars, field studies, 

coached projects, and child centered environment are just a few

examples of what awaits you on this coming school year.

School handbooks are an important link between parents and 

school. Please carefully read the handbook and talk it over with your

child so you become familiar with policies and procedures of the

school. We believe it is very important to develop and maintain open, 

effective two way communication between and among students, teachers, 

parents, and administrators.

School handbooks are an important link between parents and the school.

Please carefully read the handbook and talk it over with your child so that

you become familiar with the procedures. Knowing the rules at the school 

will keep things running smoothly for your child. Concerns may be directed 

to the Administrative Team or PTSA board at any time.

DAILY OPERATIONS

School Day:

Our school day begins at 7:50 a.m.

Children not riding buses should arrive at school no earlier than 7:15 a.m.

and report to the cafeteria.

Breakfast is served from 7:15 a.m.-8:35 a.m.

Students who arrive prior to 8:15 a.m. must be enrolled in the School Age

Child Care Program (SACC).

Students arriving in the classroom after 7:50 a.m. are tardy. Parents must

come into the building to sign their children in. Reminder: Three tardies

equal one absence.

Our school day ends at 2:50 p.m. Car riders are dismissed at the front

walkway. Bus riders are taken to the bus loading area. Aftercare students

are dismissed to the cafeteria. Walkers are dismissed to the second floor to exit the building via the main stairwell entrance.

Dismissal Times: 

2:40 p.m. Kindergarten (Note: Kindergarten students are dismissed 10 minutes

early)

2:50 p.m. Car Riders and Walkers

2:55 p.m. Bus Riders

Dismissal Arrangements after 4:05 p.m.

Students who have not been picked up by 4:05 p.m. will be taken directly to 

the School Age Child Care Director with their registration information. The

director will then contact the parents and let them know that they have their

child.

Parents will be charged $16.00 (a $10.00 registration fee and the $6.00 afterschool rate) for this service which is payable to SACC.

DRESS CODE

y  Pants must be worn at the waist.

y  Shirts must completely cover the abdomen, chest,  back, and shoulders.

Shoulder straps should be the width of the palm of the hand. No tank

tops or spaghetti straps.

y  Head apparel, except for religious purposes, will  not be worn inside

the building.

y  Skirts, dresses and shorts must reach mid-thigh.

y  ³Wheels´ on shoes are a danger to self and  others. They are to  be

removed during the school day.y  Clothing, accessories,  notebooks,  backpacks, etc. will  not display

racial  or ethnic slurs or symbols,  gang affiliations, vulgar or

sexually suggestive language nor language or images which promote drug 

usage.

Students who come to school in violation of the dress code will not be

allowed in class. Parents will be called to pick up the child or bring 

acceptable clothing.

BUS PROCEDURES

Bus Procedures for Discipline 

The right of all pupils to ride on school buses is conditional on their good 

behavior and observance if the following rules and regulations. Any pupil 

who violates any of these will be reported to the school principal with the

recommendation that bus privileges be suspended.

y  The bus driver is in full charge of the bus and the pupils. Pupils

shall obey the driver cheerfully and promptly.

y  Pupils shall obey and respect the orders of monitors or patrols on 

duty.

y  Pupils must be on time. The bus cannot wait for those who are not on 

time.

y  It is absolutely forbidden for pupils to throw anything out of the bus.y  Pupils must wait on the sidewalk or side of the road, out of the way of 

traffic, while waiting for the bus.

y  Pupils may not change their seat once they are seated on the bus. They

may not jump ahead of each other in line. They may not move about the

bus while it is in motion.

y  There will be no eating on the bus.

y  Pupils who write or make any marks on the bus, windows or seats will be

suspended immediately.

y  High noise levels are unacceptable and distracting to the bus driver.

y  Any disruptive behavior or language toward students or the bus driver

while on the bus can result in suspension.

 Misconduct on the Bus

y  Student transportation is a privilege and not a right. A student shall 

become ineligible for bus transportation when his or her behavior

physically endangers other riders, causes dissension on the school bus, 

or when he/she disobeys State and/or Local Rules and Regulations

pertaining to bus transportation.

y  Each school bus driver must report any misconduct by students to the

principal.

y  The principal can determine the disciplinary action and suspension of 

bus privileges, which may involve loss of student transportation for a

period up to the balance of the school year. Extreme infractions may

remove bus privileges permanently.

HEALTH PROCEDURES

Parents will be required to complete a Student Registration Form listing 

phone numbers and medical information. If phone numbers change, it isnecessary to contact the office immediately. These records are necessary for

emergency contacts and could be used to admit you child for emergency

services at a hospital. While filling in this information, please keep in 

mind that this information is used to contact you in the event of an 

emergency or accident. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary an emergency

contact person and phone number (other than you) be provided. Please make

sure this person is permitted by both parents to pick up your child if 

needed.  NOTE: Please inform the teacher and office of any condition your

child has that is life threatening such as severe asthma, allergies, etc. 

 Medication Policy: 

Please ask your doctor for medicine that can be given three times a day.

Parents can then give doses in the morning, immediately after school, and at

bedtime. This limits instructional interruptions. In the event your doctor

does not recommend the above dosage schedule, please pick up an HCDE

medication form from the nurse or your doctor. This must be completed and 

signed by your physician and co-signed by the parent or guardian in order for

medication to be given at school.

Requirements for Administering Medication at School: 

y  Medication should be brought to the office by an adult in the original 

prescription bottle.

y  A new medication permission form must be provided to the school at the

beginning of each school year.

y  Prescribed emergency medication to address life-threatening situation 

must be readily accessible to the student at all times. Examples of

the medications include but are not limited to: asthma inhalers, 

glucose tablets, etc.

y  The permission form must be updated when there is a change in dosage or

time of medication.

y  No medications other than those prescribed by a physician are permitted 

and/or administered at school. 

Head Lice Procedures:

If it is discovered that your child has head lice you will be notified to 

pick him/her up. Parents are required to accompany returning children to the

nurse for a head recheck. If school personnel do not deem treatment

satisfactory, the student will not be readmitted to school. 

Fever Policy:

Students who have fevers are to remain at home. If we discover they are

running a fever at school, we will contact you to pick them up immediately.Please remember students must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to 

school.

 Accident form Procedures:

Anytime an accident occurs on school grounds, a teacher or school 

administrator will fill out an accident form. Parents will be notified when 

an event occurs warranting an accident report.

Student Procedures

y  Lost and Found: Any item sent to school needs to be labeled with your

child¶s first and last name. Found items are kept in the auditorium.

Valuable items are kept in the office. Items are taken to the Goodwill 

every nine weeks.

y  Point of Arrival and Departure: No pedestrians are to enter the

building via the bus loading area. Students arriving in cars are to be

dropped off at the front walkway.

y  Early Dismissal: Students who must leave school early are to be signed 

out in the office where a pass will be issued which is to be given to 

the student¶s teacher.

y  Tardiness: If a child is tardy, the parent must come inside and fill 

out a tardy slip. The tardy slip is sent to the child¶s teacher for

her/him to keep on file for attendance for the nine weeks. Three

tardies equal one absence.

y  Vending Machines: Vending machines in the cafeteria are off limits

during school hours. The vending machines will onlyb

e turned on before and after the school bell.

y  Student Fees: Fees are $75.00. Fees should be paid no later than 

October 15.

y  Summer Reading: To promote habits lifelong learning and enhance

literacy, students are required to complete summer reading requirements

prior to the beginning of each school year.

Student Lunch Program  

y  Cost for breakfast is $1.25 and lunch is $2.50 for each student.

y  Breakfast items are individually priced.

y  Lunches should either be prepaid weekly or monthly in the cafeteria.

y  Parents are responsible for maintaining debt free cafeteria accounts

for their children. Charges are never to exceed $5.00.

y  Applications for free and reduced lunch are available on registration 

day or in the office.

Teacher Conferences 

There are two scheduled calendar conference days with teachers (refer to 

calendar).

y  Parents are expected to attend conferences on these days. NOTE: ALL

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES SHOULD BE COMPLETED WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE

SCHOOL SCHEDULED CONFERENCE DATES. (Parents are responsible forcontacting the teacher for missed conferences). 

PTSA 

Oak Street Academy is a PTSA school. If you are interested in serving on the

Oak Street Academy board, please let us know. All parents should plan on 

attending the first meeting. The listing of the meeting times and dates will

be sent home with registration forms. Join the PTSA and give them your

support! We are a growing school that provides quality education. Our staff 

of teachers is dedicated to providing every child an opportunity to be

successful. We look forward to working with you, and continuing a committed 

partnership to ensure success for your child.

Discipline Policy 

y  The use, sale or possession of alcohol on school property, a school 

bus, or at any school event or activity is prohibited.

y  A student who assaults or threatens to assault a teacher, principal, 

student or other employee of the Hamilton County Department of 

Education, shall be reported to local law enforcement officials and 

shall be suspended for a period of time determined by the principal or

assistant principal.

y  Sexual harassment shall be defined as conduct, advances, gestures, 

words of specific sexual nature or words which are commonly accepted 

that have a sexual connotation which: a.  Creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive learning 

environment.

y  A student, who wantonly injures, defaces or disfigures any building or

fixture attached thereto owned by the Hamilton County Department of 

Education shall be reported to local law enforcement officials.

y  A student who intentionally initiates or circulates a report of past, 

present, or impending bombing, fire or other emergency, knowing that

the report is false or baseless shall be referred to local law

enforcement officials.

y  Any student who either verbally or in written form or printed 

communication maliciously threatens to accuse another of crime, offense

or immoral act or to do any injury to the person, reputation or

property of another with intent thereb

y to extort money, property orpecuniary advantage whatsoever or to compel the person so threatened to 

do any act against his will shall be reported to local law enforcement

officials.

y  UNLAWFUL GANG RELATED ACTIVITY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AND WILL RESULT IN

IMMAEDIATE EXPULSION.

Board Policy for Suspension: 

y  Disrespect to a teacher, substitute, or other school employee.

y  Indecent, vulgar, or obscene language.

y  Not being at the appropriate place at the appropriate time or

being at an off limits area.

y  Forging an official note from the school.

y  Improper boy/girl conduct.

y  Any disruptive behavior that is prejudicial to an acceptable

level of discipline within the school.

y  Willful and persistent violation of the rules of school or

truancy.

y  Immoral or disreputable conduct or vulgar or profane language.

y  Violence or threatened violence against the person of any one

attending or assigned to the school to include volunteers

involved in school business.

y  Marking, defacing, or destroying school property.

y  Possession of a knife or other edged weapons on school property, 

a school bus, or at any school event or activity.

y  Assaulting a school administrator or teacher with vulgar, obscene

or threatening language.

y  The unlawful use or possession of any illegal or prescription 

drug or drug paraphernalia on school property, a school bus, or

at any school activity or event.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Category of Excused Absences: 

y  Personal illness

y  Death in immediate family

y  Family illness (physician¶s statement give the necessity of the

student¶s service required)

y  Religious holiday

y  Personal (doctor or dental appointment that cannot be scheduled at

times other than school hours, court appearances, etc.)

y  School activities

Unexcused Absences: 

y  The law requires that school officials report any parent or guardian 

when a child is unlawfully absent from school for any five days during 

the school year without an adequate excuse.

y  The social worker will notify the parent that their child must attend 

school on a regular basis.

y  Students must bring a written statement explaining the absence, and it

must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian.

y  This is to be filed on the first day the student returns.

Excused Absences: 

y  The school will require a written note signed by the parent/legal guardian stating the reason for the child¶s absence.

Homework Provided During An Extended Illness: Your child will be allowed to make up any missed work during absences due to 

illness. Please refer to the section listed as ³Make-Up Work.´

 Make-Up Work: 

y  Excused absences (those meeting state attendance rules) shall entitle

students to make up work missed.

y  Unexcused absences may result in homework assignments issued as make-up

work that receives reduced credit.

y  Students may make-up work at the teacher¶s convenience and shall have

five school days to complete these assignments.y  Extenuating circumstances may warrant additional time.

y  Requests for make-up become the responsibility of the students.

y  Suspended students are to make up missed work and it shall be evaluated 

at seventy five percent (75%) of its value for grading purposes.
