A Message from our CO2 Chairperson

Due to the Society having the rare opportunity to perform Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011 CO2 has filled this January/February time slot. With this in mind we have chosen Oklahoma, a show now classed as a traditional musical although when first performed it was regarded as ground breaking. It has been a great experience and challenge for this young cast who have been fortunate to have the vast expertise of Dani Fincham, Neil Somerville and Leanne Fincham to guide them through the complexities of the show. I thank them for all their hard work.

The Society are this summer celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth with a series of concerts and COS will be performing Sweet Charity in early 2013. CO2 hope to be back at the Mercury later in the year with the ever popular musical Guys and Dolls. If you know of anyone who would like to be part of this show and are aged between 11- 23 advise them to keep a look out on our website for details of this and all our other shows.

Lastly I would like to thank the CO2 committee for all their help and support and a big thank you to everyone who has been involved with this production.

Finally I would like to thank you, our audience for your continued support.

Enjoy the show!

Ann Taylor, Chairperson CO2

PRODUCTION TEAM

DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPER - Dani Fincham Dani’s association with CO2 started as a performer with their very first show Grease. She went on to appear in countless shows for CO2, COS and many other societies before turning her hand to directing, initially with Braintree Operatic Society. Oklahoma is a show that has happy memories for Dani as she played Ado Annie in COS’s production in 1992. Her show experience, directorial expertise and her love of working with young performers means that you, our audience, are in for a super evening’s entertainment. MUSICAL DIRECTOR - Neil Somerville Neil is a freelance musical director, singing teacher, vocal coach & accompanist. His work has taken him all over the country, having recently completed a UK tour of "Wind in the Willows". He has strong ties to the Edinburgh festival, frequently MD’s sell-out, 5-star productions. His first introduction to the Society was as a performer, flying through the air as the ghost Fruma Sarah in Fiddler on the Roof. Since then Neil’s wide range of musical talent has been instrumental in three very successful COS/CO2 productions at the Mercury Theatre. DIRECTOR’S ASSISTANT - Leanne Fincham Leanne has enjoyed numerous productions with CO2 and COS both performing and as Director’s Assistant. She has just had a very successful appearance as Mary Magdalene in COS’s last production, Jesus Christ Superstar. Oklahoma also holds fond memories for Leanne as it was the first COS show she appeared in and she also played the role of Ado Annie in Braintree Operatic’s production. Trained as a dancer Leanne has performed with other companies both locally and nationally. She is very pleased to be able to bring her experience to the young performers of CO2.

Cast Bios Curly McClain – Richard Bland Richard is a prime advertisement for the education, development and enjoyment that CO2 gives to young people. His first performance was in Godspell in 2006 and he has appeared in every CO2 production since then progressively increasing his stage presence with more demanding roles. Richard has also appeared for COS and can be classed as a young veteran of the Mercury stage. He has also had a variety of roles in local productions which have also developed his stage experiences. Richard has three older brothers and two sisters, but only one sister has also been tempted on to the stage but despite no family thespian history Richard hopes to pursue a professional acting career. Laurey Williams – Hannah Shayle-Kennedy Hannah is another long standing member of CO2 having started with We Will Rock You in 2004 but her singing started prior to any stage performance. At the age of eight Hannah was recommended to start singing to help her breathing as she suffered from Asthma. Three years later Hannah was winning singing competitions and Asthma was consigned to the bin. Hannah has had many cameo roles during her CO2 years and progressed to COS for the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd. She loves Musical Theatre but can also be found singing in a soul music tribute band and if you were in Disney Paris last summer you may have bumped into (difficult to recognise) Hannah as Minnie Mouse. Hannah hopes for a professional singing career and sees CO2/COS as an important step for that aspiration.

Aunt Eller – Emma Ward Emma returned to Colchester after studying English Lit. and Politics at University. Opting to work in publicity we are forever grateful to her Mum for pointing Emma in the direction of our website and encouraging her join COS as Emma has loved musical theatre since childhood. Fiddler on the Roof was her first COS show followed by Calamity Jane, Sweeney Todd and Jesus Christ Superstar. This is Emma’s second performance for CO2 having made her debut in Footloose last year. Emma is also a member of the CO2 committee and has volunteered for several non-performing duties backstage. - Thanks again Mum! Will Parker – Robert Gathercole Robert started in Musical Theatre with the youth group KATS, aged 10, and through that connection made his Mercury debut as a young boy in the COS production of Fiddler on the Roof. Subsequent performances for his school in the musicals Billy Elliot and Rent plus acting exposure in two Shakespeare plays gave Robert the theatrical bug and lead him to CO2. He is a keen pianist and is in the process of writing a musical – watch this space! His first performance with CO2 was in Footloose and he hopes that, after securing a place at drama school, a professional career will develop

Ben Powell – Jud Fry Ben has been with the society since 2009, when he joined to play the title role in The Wiz. Since then he has performed in Calamity Jane, Footloose and Sweeney Todd and is pleased now to be playing Jud in Oklahoma Ben has recently graduated from a BA (Hons) in Creative Performance and is now applying for drama school. Ado Annie Carnes – Laura Wyatt Laura’s route to CO2 is different in as much as she actually started with COS in Jesus Christ Superstar and was inspired to do so after seeing Sweeney Todd. – hence Oklahoma is Laura’s CO2 debut. Music is in Laura’s soul. She started dancing as a three year old and by the time she was sixteen was already an accomplished folk singer and guitarist. She now is part of a Pop/Rock band and also teaches singing. Laura has had a slight career plan change as, despite this long standing love of playing music, she is now intent on progressing to drama school with the desire of a professional stage career. Ali Hakim – Tom Saye What a start – Tom’s first appearance in Musical Theatre was in his school’s production of Les Miserables. This led Tom to become completely involved in all his schools productions covering Little Shop of Horrors, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz. Now a devotee of Musical Theatre his next move was to the Mad Hatters Productions where he met several CO2 members who encouraged him to join them in Oklahoma. This is his CO2 debut but he has settled in sufficiently well to be voted as the Cast Liaison. Tom works locally but hopefully a place at drama school will change his career prospects. Andrew Carnes - Joseph Brazier Joe first performed with the society back in 2007 when he appeared as Pop in CO2’s We Will Rock You. Since then he has played Cyril in Summer Holiday and The Scarecrow in The Wiz. Joe studied for a Certificate of Higher Education in Theatre Arts at East 15 Acting School. Since returning to Colchester Joe has been back performing, recently in Goldilocks and the Three Bears as Dame Wanda for KATS. He looks forward to focusing on drama school auditions for September 2012. Gertie Cummins – Gabby Fusi With grandparents, parents, aunt, cousins and one sibling all being involved in professional and amateur theatre it was inevitable that Gabby would tread the boards. She started in the youth group Stars as an 8 year old learning the whole range of musical theatre disciplines and has brought that education to COS. She initially appeared in the King & I in 2003 and further COS shows followed and surprisingly this is Gabby’s first CO2 appearance. Working locally gives Gabby the chance to indulge in her other hobby playing the piano for a local concert group. www.colchesteroperaticsociety.co.uk www.colchesteroperaticsociety.co.uk

The Story This is a story of simple people at the turn of the 20th century, living loving and quarrelling against the background of the birth of a state – Oklahoma. There are two factions - farmers and cowboys, and they did not live in complete harmony. Curly a cowboy loves Laurey, the niece of Aunt Eller, who is a farmer. But Laurey cannot make up her mind – she has a bit of the coquette in her and encourages the attentions of Jud, the general factotum of the farm. Jud is a loutish fellow with a shady past and depraved nature, which is evident from pictures on the walls of his Smoke House. An argument between Curly and Jud as to who takes Laurey to a “box” social end with guns, but no harm is done. It frightens Laurey into the knowledge that she loves Curly, but is in fear of Jud. Her fear is increased by her dream when the ballet dances her fate – a tragic wedding scene in which Jud overthrows Curly, the bridegroom, and carries Laurey off as his prize, so she accepts Jud’s escort to the box social. The “box” is the supper hamper which each girl supplies; these are auctioned to the men who win the girls for supper partners. Curly only succeeds in outbidding Jud for Laurey’s hamper by selling all his worldly possessions, saddle, gun and finally his horse. The magnificence of it brings Laurey to her senses – her fear of Jud vanishes and she orders him off Aunt Eller’s farm. She consents to marry Curley and their happiness seems assured. Meanwhile others are falling in and out of love. Ado Annie who just can’t say “No” to any man has become involved with the peddlar Ali Hakim, although she was more or less promised to Will Parker, who has returned from Kansas City with loads of presents for her. Her father has a nasty habit of pointing a gun at reluctant suitors, and Ali, a real philanderer, finds himself “hooked” by that simple ruse. He manages to slide out of it by helping Will to win Ado Annie back to his side, but in doing so, Ali bounces into the arms of Gertie, whose father uses the same gun-barrel tactics to a better effect then Ado Annie’s father had done. Aunt Eller, the moving spirit of the community gives Laurey a lovely wedding. They are leaving for a honeymoon in the “Surrey with the Fringe on the Top” when Jud comes out of hiding. He is desperate and goes berserk with a knife, attacking Curly. In a grim fight Jud falls on his own knife and is fatally wounded. A Federal Marshal who is present says Curly must give himself up, but Aunt Eller has other ideas. With womanly sagacity she forces old man Carnes, who is the local judge to hold an improvised Court on the spot. A verdict of “Accidental Death” is given. Curly and Laurey depart in the Surrey to the rousing cheers and strains of “Oklahoma”, which has at last emerged as a State with farmers and cowboys united as “friends”.

In 1931, the Theatre Guild produced Lynn Riggs’ Green Grow the Lilacs, a play about settlers in Oklahoma's Indian Territory. Though the play was not initially successful, ten years later, in 1941, Theresa Helburn, one of the Guild's producers, saw a summer-stock production supplemented with traditional folk songs and square dances and decided the play could be the basis of a musical that might revive the struggling Guild. She contacted Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, whose first successful collaboration, The Garrick Gaieties, had been produced by the Theatre Guild in 1925. Rodgers decided to obtain the rights for himself and Hart and asked Oscar Hammerstein II if he would collaborate with them on the project. Coincidentally in 1942, Hammerstein had thought of musicalizing Green Grow the Lilacs, but when he approached Jerome Kern about it, the latter declined. Hart lost interest in the musical; preferring contemporary, urbane shows that would showcase his witty lyric-writing, he found the farmers and cowhands in Green Grow the Lilacs corny and uninspiring. Moreover, spiraling downward, consumed by his long standing alcoholism, Hart no longer felt like writing. He therefore embarked on a vacation to Mexico, advising Rodgers that Hammerstein would be a good choice of a new collaborator.

This partnership allowed both Rodgers and Hammerstein to follow their preferred writing methods: Hammerstein to write a complete lyric before it was set to music and Rodgers to set completed lyrics to music. As Rodgers and Hammerstein began developing the new musical, they agreed that their musical and dramatic choices would be dictated by the source material, Green Grow the Lilacs, not by musical comedy conventions. Musicals of that era featured big production numbers, novelty acts, and show-stopping specialty dances that effectively halted the story during their duration.

Between the world wars, roles in musicals were usually filled by actors who could sing, but Rodgers and Hammerstein chose the reverse, casting singers who could act. Shirley Temple was suggested as Laurey and Groucho Marx as Ali Hakim, but Rodgers and Hammerstein, together with director Rouben Mammoulian's support, insisted that performers more dramatically appropriate for the roles be cast. As a result there were no stars in the production, an unusual step. The production was choreographed by Agnes de Mille who provided one of the show's most enduring features: a first-act ballet finale (often referred to as the dream ballet) depicting Laurey's struggle to evaluate her suitors, Jud and Curly.

The first title given to the work was Away We Go! It opened for out-of-town-tryouts in New Haven's Shubert Theatre on March 11, 1943. Expectations were low; as the show had no star power. Producer Mike Todd walked out after the first act during the tryout and wisecracked “No legs, no jokes, no chance.” but Rodgers and Hammerstein were confident. The New Haven audiences and then Boston critics were enthusiastic. Only a few changes were made before it opened on Broadway, but two of the changes would prove significant- the addition of the show-stopping musical number, Oklahoma! and the decision to retitle the musical after that number.

Todd had been wrong, the show opened to raves from the critics, sold out and won a special Pulitzer Prize. Brooks Atkinson wrote in The New York Times that the show's opening number, "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" changed the history of musical theatre: “After a verse like that, sung to a buoyant melody, the banalities of the old musical stage became intolerable.". The show's creativity stimulated Rodgers and Hammerstein's contemporaries and ushered in the "Golden Age" of American musical theatre. The original Broadway production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation.

Where Are They Now? CO2 has been in existence since 1984 with an age range of 11 – 23 years. Over those years there have been many Society members who have developed their experience of the stage with the Society and have then progressed on to a professional career in the Theatre. This fact fills us with great pride as it illustrates the discipline and Theatre Skills they have learnt allows them to progress to drama schools and universities to further their studies. Not all members of course wish to pursue a performance career, many choose to study technical theatre. In last years production of Footloose there were 54 young people in the cast and virtually all of the older members of that show have gone on to Universities or Drama School, with the ultimate intention of having a successful career in theatre. This fact gives all members of Colchester Operatic Society, particularly the team who are responsible for CO2, great pleasure to see its members fulfilling their potential. The majority of Theatre Schools are oversubscribed, often by multiples of 1,000, and for so many of the young people to have secured their places is indeed a triumph for their hard work, motivation and skill. The CO2 committee thought that you, our audience, would like to know where these members have gone and if their names do appear in lights you can say:-

The CO2 committee thought that you, our audience, would like to know where these members have gone and if their names do appear in lights you can say:-

“I SAW THEM HERE FIRST”
