In any given situation the medium, or media,for communication must be selected. Onemedium may work better than another.However, in many cases a combination ofmedia may be used for the communicationprocess to function effectively.

One principal barrier to effectivecommunication is mental. It consists ofnoise in the mind of the sender orreceiver.

Both time and space (the physical separationbetween the sender and the receiver) mayserve as barriers to effective

communication.

Empathy and Other Relationships

Lack of empathy can create a barrier betweenthe sender and receiver. Empathy, asdefined in the Dictionary, is "understandingso intimate that the feelings, thoughts, andmotives of one are readily comprehended byanother." You can transmit a better messageif you can put yourself in the receiver's

place and analyze the message from hisviewpoint. The same holds true for thereceiver.

Generally, managers make more frequent useof oral, rather than written, communication.However, the media one selects forcommunication in a particular situationshould correlate with the feedbackrequirements. A communication failure orpartial failure could occur if the media youselect for transmittal of a message isinappropriate and necessary feedback is notreceived

We have examined the principal barriers to effectivecommunication . We have seen all around us theproblems resulting from the inability of people in today'sworking environment to penetrate these barriers.

Can we let the barriers to effective communication in the

organization continue to block the path to effectivemanagement? What are we going to do about it? Try to reduce these barriers, some of them may be

eliminated. As a result, management of yourorganization will be enhanced. Why not take such action

today?
