    Although advertising is closely related to public relations as it toois concerned with promoting and gaining public acceptance for thecompany's products the goal of advertising is generating sales,

    while the goal of public relations is generating good will. The effectof good public relations is to lessen the gap between how anorganization sees itself and how others outside the organizationperceive it.

    Public relations involves two-way communication betweenan organization and its public. It requires listening to theconstituencies on which an organization depends as well asanalyzing and understanding the attitudes and behaviorsof those audiences. Only then can an organizationundertake an effective public relations campaign.Many small business owners elect to handle the publicrelations activities for their own companies, while otherschoose to hire a public relations specialist. Managers ofsomewhat larger firms, on the other hand, frequentlycontract with external public relations or advertisingagencies to enhance their corporate image. But whateveroption is chosen, the head of a company is ultimatelyresponsible for its public relations.
