This painting expresses the lighting effects of a cloudy day and the transition between light and dark. It uses the local colors of California throughout.

I took several trips to Northwest China between 1999 and 2004 and experienced the scenery through the eyes of an artist. In this painting, I try to capture the eternal quality of the “unadorned primitive beauty” of the Mogao Grottoes and the essence of its unique collections of Buddhist arts.

Wanghai ChenInk on Rice Paper 26 x 26 in.

Inspired by a Tang Dynasty poem, I created this abstract landscape painting with bold, simple brushstrokes echoing the poetic appreciation of harmony in nature.

Near John Marsh Creek, looking down from the highway. I used quick strokes to capture the reflection of the landscape in the water.

The Impressionists are recognized for their handling of light. I am inspired by them, Monet in particular, and especially by his use of light in his Rouen Catherdral and haystack series. Through light he was able to express the time of day, the atmosphere of the locations, and the moods that each evoked. Even in my abstract works, I find that I am most successful when the light conveys these properties.

My landscape paintings are attempts to incorporate my own style—simplification, semi-abstraction, high contrast colors, and exaggerated brush strokes—with traditional Shey-Ye techniques such as broad loose brush strokes and ink washes with reduced colors and softened focus.
