Dear Landowner
PROPOSED BOTSWANA-SOUTH AFRICA (BOSA) TRANSMISSION INTERCONNECTION PROJECT
DEA REF: 14/12/16/3/3/2/1025
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (ESIA) REPORT AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME (EMPr) NOW AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
We thank the many stakeholders that have contributed to the above process to date. This letter serves
as notification of the availability of the ESIA Report and EMPr for public comment.
Background
A full environmental impact assessment process is underway for the BOSA project. The project entails the installation of 210 km of 400 kV transmission line which will link the Isang substation near Gaborone in Botswana and the proposed Mahikeng Substation near Mahikeng in South Africa, with 146 km of the line being in South Africa and the rest in Botswana. The spacing of the pylons will be determined in the detailed design phase. The application for environmental authorisation (EA) is for a 1 km wide corridor, within which the transmission lines will be located.
In terms of Regulation 41 published in Government Notice R982 of December 2014, promulgated
under the National Environmental Management Act No. 107 of 1998 (NEMA) (as amended), the
Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) has appointed Aurecon South Africa (Pty) Ltd, as the
independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to undertake and manage the overall ESIA
process to obtain the required EA. Aurecon is managing the ESIA process in South Africa and partners
with Digby Wells, trading as RPM, to ensure compliance with the national requirements in Botswana.
