    Introduction

    Althoughtherearenumerousinstrumentsdesignedtomeasureindividualprotectivefactors,thereisnotasingleinstrumentthatassessesmultipleprotectivefactorsagainstchildabuseandneglect.In2004,FRIENDSNationalResourceCenterforCommunityBasedChildAbusePrevention(CBCAP)beganaprojecttodevelopaProtectiveFactorsSurvey(PFS)foritsnetworkoffederallyfundedCommunityBasedChildAbusePrevention(CBCAP)programs.Thisprojectwasinitiatedtohelpprogramsassesschangesinfamilyprotectivefactors,amajorfocusofpreventionwork.TheSPFSisaproductoftheFRIENDSNRCincollaborationwiththeUniversityofKansasCenterforPublicPartnershipsandResearch.Theinstrumentwasdevelopedwiththeadviceandassistanceofresearchers,administrators,workers,andexpertsspecializinginfamilysupportandmaltreatmentandpsychologicalmeasurement.Thesurveyhasundergonefournationalfieldtests.

    PurposeandUse

    Currently,thereareSpanishversionsoftheSPFSbeingusedbychildmaltreatmentpreventionprogramsacrossthenation.Basedonfeedbackfromthefield,preventionleadersrecommendedthatwerevisetheSPFSandtheassociatedscaletoaddressproblemsunderstandingtheinterpretationoftheSPFS.Inresponse,aresearchteamattheUniversityofKansasandnationalbilingualcommitteerevisedtheitemsandscale.TheProtectiveFactorsSurvey(SPFS)isa20itemmeasuredesignedforusewithcaregiversreceivingchildmaltreatmentpreventionservicessuchashomevisiting,parenteducation,andfamilysupport.Itisaprepostsurveycompletedbytheprogramparticipants,usuallyparentsorcaregivers.TheSPFSmeasuresprotectivefactorsinfiveareas:familyfunctioning/resiliency,socialsupport,concretesupport,nurturingandattachment,andknowledgeofparenting/childdevelopment.TheprimarypurposeoftheProtectiveFactorsSurveyistoprovidefeedbacktoagenciesforcontinuousimprovementandevaluationpurposes.Thesurveyresultsaredesignedtoprovideagencieswiththefollowinginformation: Asnapshotofthefamiliestheyserve Changesinprotectivefactors Areaswhereworkerscanfocusonincreasingindividualfamily

    Description

    TheProtectiveFactorsSurveyisapencilandpapersurveyconsistingofthreesections.TheStaffUseOnlyFormandPageOneoftheSPFSareoptionalsectionsandmaybeusedtogatherprogramanddemographicinformation.

    DescriptionoftheProtectiveFactorsSurveyStaffForm.ThepurposeoftheStaffUseOnlyFormistogatherinformationabouttheparticipant.Programstaffwhoareknowledgeableabouttheparticipantcompletethissection.TheStaffUseOnlyFormcontainstwosetsofquestions:1)participantssurveyexperience,includingtheadministrationdate,andtypesofservicesprovided,and2)programdosage,specificallyparticipantslengthofinvolvementandtypesofservicesreceived.Pageon
