I have had the privilege of meeting many of you that have attended our Year 7 BBQ, Year 11 Parent Information Night and interviews with myself regarding changes to your child’s pattern of study. It has been fantastic to see such engagement from our parent community, as we really do make the biggest and best difference for your children when we are all working together to improve their learning. Year 11 Parent Information Evening Staff setting their professional goals at Twilight Learning As odd as this may sound, this has been an exciting term of planning for the year ahead. It is important for you to know that all staff have set a minimum of three goals to improve their teaching so that student learning is enhanced this year. Furthermore, 2018 is the beginning of a new school planning cycle. This means we are currently writing the 2018-2020 Kanahooka School Plan. As I mentioned previously, the school’s partnership with its parent community is vital in this process, so keep an eye out for the school plan survey that will come out soon for parents to complete in order to have a say in the future direction of the school. I look forward to meeting many more parents in the year ahead and reporting on the fantastic outcomes that have been planned for your children throughout the year. Mr S Bird Deputy Principal

Firstly I would like to say a big hello to our parent community at Kanahooka.

Year 11 Parent Information Evening Staff setting their professional goals at Twilight Learning

As odd as this may sound, this has been an exciting term of planning for the year ahead. The Executive team and staff, school wide, have been engaging in their own learning relating to establishing professional goals that have the needs of our students at their core. It is important for you to know that all staff have set a minimum of three goals to improve their teaching so that student learning is enhanced this year.

Furthermore, 2018 is the beginning of a new school planning cycle. This means we are currently writing the 2018-2020 Kanahooka School Plan. This process involves reflecting on the 2014-2017 School Plan and deciding what the school must now prioritise in order to maximise outcomes for our students.

Science

Science teacher recognised

As a school, Kanahooka High School is wonderful at recognising the achievements of our students. However, it’s not every day that one of our teachers get their name up in lights. This was the case for the Science Faculty’s very own, Mr Arthur (aka Mr Burner) at the recent UOW Festival of STEM and Entrepreneurship. Anyone who has been in one of Mr Arthur’s classes knows what a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher he is, so it was great that UOW recognised him the Most Enthusiastic Teacher award at the festival. Congratulations Mr Arthur, keep up the good work.

students who would like to learn more about Science.

The first session of the year took place on Wednesday 21

March where 24 students enjoyed using Science to solve

mysteries as part of the ‘Fantastic Forensics’ afternoon.

All who attended had a great time and special thanks must go

to the wonderful KHS mentors who help run these afternoons.

The mentors were: Xander F, Harry V, Chelsea B, Kobi M,

Tiarne M, Courtney M, Mikayla W, Bonnie-Rose C, Carissa M,

Tyler H, Chloe P, Samuel C and Macarthur P. The Burners

will be on again in Week 8 Term 2.

Luna Park fun

A bright sunny day greeted the fifty Year 10 students as they eagerly boarded a bus for Luna Park to conclude their Year 10 motion studies in Science. Excitement levels were high as the students worked their way through the rides of Luna Park, showing no fear (unless they were in the Haunted House). All students were outstanding representatives of KHS and the teachers attending the excursion cannot speak highly enough of the student’s behaviour and positive attitude, resulting in the great day that was had by all. The excursion wraps up the Motion topic and students will be studying the Genetics topic for the remainder of the term.

Year 12 - Road 2 Success Workshops

On Tuesday 20 March, Year 12 students participated in Road 2 Success workshops run by the University of Wollongong Outreach and Pathways team. The workshops introduced the many pathways open to students following the HSC and the importance of considering all pathways including University, paid work, TAFE, Private Colleges and apprenticeships.

The team also talked about alternate entry programs, gaining the most from tertiary education, and some of the things that students can do now to prepare for their transition from the HSC. UOW staff commented on what a lovely group of students we have at Kanahooka High, and that it was a pleasure to work with our students. Well done Year 12!

ChromeOS

Re-purposing old computers for re-use. (Sounds great doesn’t it?) We’ve been using some of our old Lenovo computers (from 2010) with ChromeOS as a test to see how effective they are in the classroom. Although limited for high end applications they are great for web research and using the Google apps. Previously we’ve had to have them setup as a Guest device which makes them a little limited. The current setup we’re testing allows students to login with their own credentials and get straight into Google apps so they can get straight into their tasks. This is linked directly to their Google Education account, and saves directly to their Google drive (no more lost documents). We’ve even been able to get the printer to work for devices which is another step in the right direction to

keep running costs down.

I have tested the machines with my own account and can get into Google Docs linked to my account without having to login a second time. Google Docs shown below.

When logged into devices students can click on

(Google Docs) as shown and it will load as shown

on the second picture.

Are some of the computers too old? What do you do when you can’t repurpose or re-use old technology?

Recycling

Working with Sims Metal Management we will be running an E-waste recycling drive for students and their families and the local community, with the goal of recycling E-waste and not adding to landfill. Watch next fortnight’s newsletter for information and dates.

Senior Girls Open Soccer

On Thursday 15 March, our Open Girls Soccer Team played away against Dapto High School.

We made a great start, with the match’s opening goal scored by Emily M, leading us in to half time 1 nil up. Unfortunately, after half time, the girls could not keep the other team out and we went down in the second half. These girls however, should be extremely proud of themselves as they played a strong game, by no means letting the other team walk all over them. They fought hard and represented KHS in a fantastic manner.

Well done girls!

Dance Workshop

On Tuesday 13 March, we had approximately 30 students, from KHS and surrounding Primary Schools, participating in another Dance Workshop, this time in the style of Hip Hop. With our extremely talented choreographer, Catrina Ralph, everyone had a wonderful time, learning some new moves and stepping outside of their comfort zone. It was wonderful to see all students trying something new, helping one another and just enjoying themselves.
