Leading Innovation and Implementing New Ideas in the Public Sector Implications for Leadership Style, Communication, Strategy and Emotional Intelligence

Capable leaders in the Public Sector regularly face challenges in implementing new ideas. Encouraging innovation is necessary as the Public Sector constantly evolves in line with governance and the public interest needs. As such, leaders need an agile mindset, to work collectively and communicate effectively. Self-awareness is a given, but leaders also need to manage ambiguity, uncertainty and work their way through ever-changing and complex environments.

Leaders who are emotionally intelligent in their resolve and well networked can innovate and solve problems with ease as they have internal and external support and networks to draw upon. By effectively communicating ideas upwards and downwards in their organisation they can strengthen relationships and empower the individuals they work with.

This workshop explores the power of communication as a resource to help female leaders to innovate and support innovation in their leadership roles.

Promoting an innovative culture

• Thinking in different boxes

• Encouraging creative thinking and liquid networks

• Finding new combinations of existing products / services to create new ones

Introducing innovations

• Using Lean Start Up approaches and encouraging entrepreneurship

• Building MVPs (Minimum Viable Products)

• Working with leadership paradoxes: innovating and maintaining business as usual

Using design thinking

• Adopting a design thinking mindset

• Using a design thinking approach to get close to your stakeholders

• Iterating as you go to develop new products or services

Being agile

• Using agile thinking and approaches

• Building teams able to own and innovate

• Adopting agile methods, including sprints, Kanban boards, scrum meetings and retrospectives

Pre-Summit Workshop14 February 2017

ABOUT THE EVENTTransformations in the New Zealand Public Service have unlocked new and exciting pathways and opportunities for emerging talent to make their mark, and for established leaders to hone their skills. Recent years have seen traditional command and control hierarchies disrupted and increasingly supplanted by collaborative leadership models, creating a dynamic new palette for up-and-coming female leaders to draw from.

There are still cultural and systemic challenges to overcome, but ongoing developments have created exciting opportunities for ambitious leaders to step up and drive change across the Public Sector.

The 4th Annual Public Sector Women in Leadership Summit 2017 is designed to focus on the opportunities, rather than the obstacles, for women to progress their careers within this evolving sector. The Summit will provide an exceptional platform for women to share their practical advice and guidance on the key skills required to lead effectively and navigate a path to success.
