Imagination Library Book Bank Earns Interest of ReaderThe Bank for Books created by Friends President Claire Serrell enticed a

youngster to read the book that inspired her creation. Claire’s bank, shown here with Sequoyah Branch managers Jan Miller and Denise Crawhorn, features Ferdinand the bull, hero of Munro Leaf’s classic, sitting quietly in the shade of a cork tree. Claire crafted Ferdinand’s tree from wine-bottle corks and placed it in the Sequoyah Branch Library. After spending a long time looking through the book as he sat on the floor, a young boy checked it out to take home.

The Banks for Books campaign continues through November 30.

Scout Troop “Can Do” Attitude Embraces ESF CampaignMoments after the Friends Empty Stocking Fund book drive was posted on

Facebook, troop leader Heather Mekelberg saw it and presented the idea of a book collection to her Brownie troop in Kingston. The troop of seven and eight-year olds, who have been together since kindergarten and first grade, has several enthusiastic readers and they all readily agreed.

Friends provided the posters and sup-plies and each girl found a local business or church to be a book drop. “One of our goals” says Heather, “is to choose activ-ities that a girl has not done before and that will boost her self-confidence. Making the initial contact, explaining the project, and then periodically collecting the books are all new skills for these girls.”

Join these Brownies and others who are working to ensure that every child opens a new book this year. Drop off new or like-new children’s books at any Knox County Public Library location, make a donation online or send a check to Friends (with ESF Book Drive in memo line) at 500 W. Church Ave., Knoxville, TN 37902.

Friends Is Joining the #GivingTuesday Campaign! Now in its fourth year, #GivingTuesday is both a celebration of gen-

erosity and an opportunity for giving. Observed on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday focuses on charitable giving at a time when many people are considering their holiday and end-of-year giving.

#GivingTuesday uses social media to enlist the generosity of people in bringing about change in their communities. It provides a platform to en-courage the donation of time, resources and tal-ents to address local challenges and support local nonprofit organizations.

Why the hashtag “#”? The # symbol is used to organize messages on social media. Adding a # to a word or group of words creates a searchable link on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Well-designed hashtags such as #GivingTuesday make it possible to engage and share messages with larger audiences with common interests.

#GivingTuesday 2015 is December 1. To learn more about how you can participate in this day of giving back, visit our website.

Why I Am A Friend

“Over the years I have watched the Friends of the Knox County Library become an increasingly active organization, offering a wide range of enriching pro-grams for our community. I would like to play a part in raising awareness of the important work being done by our public library that strengthens our democratic ideals, enhances our children’s literacy, and creates an information rich environment for all our citizens. Getting involved with Friends is my avenue for mak-ing a contribution to this worthy endeavor.”

Jane S. Row

“Libraries are for me at the core of what it means to live in a civilized society. At the library a little boy and girl can change the trajectory of their lives by immersing themselves in that big helpful room of helpful people and in the glory that a book, a history, an interest can do for that trajectory. I would simply not be doing what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for that sturdy, dependable, and free service the public library provided me so I feel partly responsible for ensuring it’s there for others. Civilization doesn’t just happen—one has to not only create it but nourish it.”

Brian Pittman
