Year 4 Rhinos visited Moortown Baptist Church on Tuesday 28th November to take part in a "Rewind to Christmas" afternoon.

MOORTOWN BAPTIST CHURCH

They learnt all about the Christmas story as well as getting involved in some fantastic Christmas crafts. The children were fantastic representatives of CMCS.

Mr Read

PLANTERARIUM VISITThe planterarium came to visit Reception and Year 5, to help us learn about space and the planets.

Inside the huge inflated dome, we travelled across the stars and galaxies looking at the constellations and planets. We looked at some of the constellations linked to the Ancient Greek myths too!

It was a really exciting visit that left us buzzing with questions!

Miss Moores

Animal Adventure Film AwardsYear 1 hosted an Animal Adventure film awards ceremony on Thursday 30th November.

The children invited their parents in to see their animal documentaries, which they had worked really hard to create! They had to research their facts, make their own costumes and set the scene for the films.

The children really enjoyed this learning linked to their big topic question "Why can't a meerkat live in the North Pole?" and pulled out their best clothes for the red carpet!

Miss Wiles and Miss Spacey

The lanyard and certificate presentations will now take place after Christmas. Keep your eyes out for the Chronicle on Tuesday 2nd January, so that you know when the presentation ceremony is being held.

Well done to all pupils who undertook the training – you will make excellent RP reps for Carr Manor!

The Name of This Book Is Secret Pseudonymous Bosch

Star Book

The Name of This Book Is Secret is secret.

Books can give you ideas and emotions, and these may cause a dangerous reaction to the secret. And it is vital that it remains a secret, for the dangers that would follow are immeasurable. So whatever you learn when you read this, you need to forget, right away.

It’s a story about Cassie and Max-Earnest, two curious kids determined to know the truth. But unfortunately, their pleas for help remain ignored, due to Cassie’s tendency to cry wolf. So, alone, they must discover the truth of the Symphony of Smells, the

REVERSE CHRISTMAS CALENDAR HOUSE COMPETITION Whilst many of you will be looking

forward to opening your Christmas Advent calendars with a treat to start your day, we would like to flip this tradition by holding a House competition with a twist.

We are asking for every pupil that is able to, to bring items that contributes to a box of goodies that will go to people in need over the Christmas period.

Members of Stainbeck Church and Family Solutions help people in our local community by sharing out donations for Christmas hampers which will make a huge difference to how some people feel over the school holidays.

As a Coaching group you need to;

• Source a suitable box for your Coaching groups hamper and decorate it.

• Check out the suggested items on the calendar but remember a wider variety of donations are accepted and can be added to your box.

• Bring down your completed box to Rewards Assembly on the 15th December to add to your House total and be in with a chance to win.

There will be a prize for the best decorated box and most amount of donations per Coaching group.

mysterious box of smells that reveal a message from a recently deceased magician : HELP.

Cassie and Max-Earnest must find the truth, and make sure they don’t get caught. And for two kids, this is particularly dangerous. But they need to know what happened to the magician before he died, and why he sent this call for help in such an unusual way.

This book is recommended for the younger years in the school, but anyone can read this book or other amazing books in F1, on the science corridor every break and Monday after school.

MATHS JOKE OF THE WEEK

YEAR 9 - Your Midterms are due to take place in the first week back from your Christmas break. Please ensure you revise and get a list of topics from your maths teacher. Good Luck.

YEAR 11 - Please ensure you speak with your maths teacher and create a revision plan for the Christmas Holidays. It is crucial you make the most of this time to revise towards your GCSE Examinations in May/June.

STAFF MESSAGES

MATHS PUZZLE OF THE WEEK

HOW OLD IS SANTA CLAUS?

While you are visiting Santa Claus, he gives you a riddle to find out how old he is.

He says, “I started work when I was 15. I spent 1/4 of my working life in a factory, then 1/5 of my working life in an

office, and 1/3 of my working life as a school caretaker. For the last 13 years I’ve been working as Santa Claus.

How old am I?”

Why do mathematicians

confuse Halloween and Christmas?

Because 31 Oct = 25 Dec

The play on words lies in the similarity of the abbreviation for October/Octal and December/Decimal, and the

coincidence that the two representations equal the same amount (318= 2510)

MATHS TRIVIA OF THE WEEK

PHOTO OF THE WEEKYear 4 and the Romans

RECEPTIONWe have had a busy couple of weeks in Reception learning and practising our sounds, numbers and writing as well as getting ready for Christmas. We have been practising singing carols, talking about the story of Christmas and making calendars. In Literacy the sounds we have been looking at are ‘f’ ‘e’ ‘l’ ‘h’ and the Tricky word is ‘is’. As well as this we have been really focussing on segmenting (c-a-t) and blending words (cat). In Mathematics we have looked at counting objects 1:1, looking at one more than and one less than a number as well as looking at length and size of objects. We really enjoyed the parents coming in for our Christmas themed Monsterous Maths Day and we enjoyed showing off our skills and learning. Well done for a fantastic two weeks Reception Class!

YEAR 1Year one have continued to be busy monkeys and butterflies! First of all we want to say a huge thank-you to all the grown-ups who attended our Animal Adventure film awards. The children absolutely loved showing you all their hard work and it makes it so special for us to share it with you. The children have shown great team work, enthusiasm and dedication while making their film documentaries. Now we are preparing for our next big event - NATIVITY! In English we have linked in our topic learning and created animal fact files. We have made sure to use a range of punctuation including full stops, question marks and exclamation mark! In maths we have began to look at fractions. We have focused on looking at half and how to work out half of a shape or quantity. The children have also began to challenge themselves by using the 'bar modelling' method. Well done Year 1 you continue to make us very proud teachers!

YEAR 2It has been a busy few weeks in Year 2. We have been learning how to divide by 2,3,5 and 10 in maths and we have now moved on to fractions. The Meerkats and Turtles have been finding it tricky but are being very resilient. In English we have been learning about formal letters, how to write them and then showing off our skills by writing a letter to Santa!

YEAR 5We're super excited in year 5 not only for all the Christmas activities next week but we also have our school trip to Leeds city Museum for our Greek workshop. Our language of the month this month is also Greek to match our big learning question. This week we have also joined in the big sing with Year 7 to help get us in the mood for Christmas. In our writing we have learned how to build suspense so as to terrify Miss Moores as she marks! In our maths this week we have started looking a fractions. Happy Christmas wolves! Have a lovely holiday!

YEAR 4We’ve had a great half term learning all about what the Romans gave to use. We could easily keep going for another few terms (or years!). We’ve written reports about Romulus and Remus as well as Boudicca’s Celtic uprising, we’ve had a fantastic inspiration day where we fought as Gladiators and raced like Chariots, we’ve made colourful mosaics and created some beautiful Roman helmets. I hope the Rhinos have enjoyed this history topic as much as I have. Have a fantastic Christmas break; you have definitely earned it this term.

YEAR 3We have had a busy couple of weeks in Year 3 writing fact files and learning all about fractions. A huge well-done to all the children who are regularly completing Further Learning; it makes a real difference and helps you to make even better progress. We've also had quite a few exploding volcanoes arrive in Year 3 as part of the children's Further Learning! As Christmas approaches, we've been getting ready for our Christmas sing-a-long! Finally, we really enjoyed the parents coming in for our Christmas themed Monsterous Maths Day and we enjoyed showing off our skills and learning. Well done for a fantastic two weeks, Year 3! Happy Holidays!

A big well done to the Year 7 and

Year 9 netball teams that competed

against Wetherby High School on

Tuesday 5th December.

After initially going down 2-0, the Year

9s fought back to a draw at 2-2 through some brilliant

attacking play from P and E. The girls continued to

show resilience throughout the match, with the final

score being 6-3 to Wetherby. Well done to TF for

getting player of the match.

The Year 7s went into their match undefeated so they

were feeling the pressure. However, after a strong

start and some great shooting by SG they went 3-0 up.

Wetherby came back in the final quarter to put some

extra pressure on the Carr Manor defence, but the girls

remained strong and won the match 5-2.

Well done to SG for being nominated player of the

match.

Miss Robinson

Shout out to the Carr Manor teachers that entered a charity

mixed netball tournament on Sunday 3rd December.

The team included Miss Walker, Miss Robinson, Miss Moores,

Mr Dixon and Mr Nock. Having never played together before, the

team did exceptionally well to be undefeated in all 6 matches and

win the entire tournament!

Mr Dixon even said that netball is better than football after he did

some fantastic shooting as GA!

Australia’s parliament has legislated for marriage equality, passing a bill almost unanimously to allow two people, regardless of sex, to marry.

AUSTRALIA BECOMES 25TH COUNTRY TO RECOGNISE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

• How much do you think this will change life for Australians?

• Do you know which was the first country to legalise same sex marriage?

Source: The Guardian

Australia, which changed the law in 2004 to say that marriage is only between a man and a woman, now becomes the 25th country to recognise same-sex marriage.

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Tony Smith, declared the vote carried, since fewer than five MPs opposed it, triggering a standing ovation from the parliamentarians and public gallery.

Some broke into a rendition of the chorus of one of the country’s many unofficial anthems: “I am, you are, we are Australian.”

The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told the house that “Australia has done it - every Australian had their say, and they said ‘it’s fair, get on with it’.”

“We’ve voted today for equality, for love, it’s time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect,” he said. “This is Australia: fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect.”

Couples hoping to marry in Australia will have to wait until the New Year after the 28-day notice period to marry.

“It’s taken an embarrassingly long time to get marriage equality, but finally it’s done.” – Ivan Hinton-Teoh (former Deputy National Director for Australian Marriage Equality)
