Pupils’ social development is shown by their:
Use of a range of social skills in different contexts, including working and socialising with pupils from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
Willingness to participate in a variety of social settings, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively
Interest in and understanding of, the way communities and societies function at a variety of levels.
Behaviour
Strong personal, spiritual, moral and cultural development is at the heart of the
school’s success and underpins pupils’ good behaviour. Pupils feel safe at school.
The behaviour of pupils is good. Pupils, parents and staff agree. Pupils are polite,
courteous and respectful of each other and adults. They have good attitudes to
learning, follow teachers’ instructions well and waste very little time when settling
down to their learning.
Pupils treat their environment with respect and inspectors saw no evidence of litter.
Playtimes are harmonious and pupils from all backgrounds get on really well with
each other. (Ofsted 2014)
Nursery
We have 24 full time places in our nursery. The children coming in are often ‘low’ in key areas of
learning. However, we provide stimulating resources and activities and engage the children in
variety of learning tasks so by the time they leave the Foundation stage, which is at the age of 5,
most of them are in line with national expectations.
I can’t believe the things my
child’s learning in Nursery, she’s
spotting letters anywhere we go
and she says all their sounds!
(parent)
I like playing with water because it’s fun
and it does ‘splashy, splashy’!
In Nursery I learnt ABC. A a - apple!
Before I was here, I was somewhere else. But my mum
and parents brought me here from Canada. I learnt here
playing and writing. I can write A, B, C, D, E, F…and I can
also write Canada: C – A – N – A – D – A.
Class assemblies
To develop the ‘whole child’ and children’s confidence, every class prepares a ‘performance’ for the
rest of the school and we also invite parents in. The themes are usually based on the current
learning, so for example Y1 acted out Rumpelstiltskin (and composed music for it!) while Y3 summed
up their amazing knowledge of Egyptians.
The class assemblies are becoming increasingly popular with the families and we often struggle to
find enough room for all of them!
My daughter used to be so shy and wouldn’t even
talk to my friends, but now she’s talking loudly
and confidently in front of the whole school.
I can’t believe the change!
(Parent)
The best part was when we sang the song
and the children went ‘whirr, whirr, whirr
went the spinning wheel all night long.’
I liked being a guard because we
were holding a sheet. I was a bit
nervous, so I just looked another
way at my friends.
I liked saying my line. It was really good!
Reach Out
St Peter’s has partnered with ‘Reach Out’, a charity that helps young people with their academic
work and social skills through 1:1 mentoring. Every Monday we had lots of university students –
volunteers coming in to work with some of Y5 & Y6 children. Not only that they had learnt a lot
(from each other!), they also had fun together and developed some strategies in friendships or
conflict resolutions.
I enjoyed it because it helped me with maths,
English and progress and they also had fun
games and I really enjoyed myself.
We do some educational activities like revise of
maths and then we do some fun activities, like once
we got some salt dough, we shaped it into animals
and we had to paint it. We used to play bench ball,
charades and lots of other fun games.
Opportunities to participate in a variety of social settings
After school Clubs
Our school provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities after school – sports, singing,
instruments, art, art history, science, and reading. The cost is highly subsidised by the school and
therefore available to anyone. Many parents who have friends in other schools said that they have
never seen such a huge choice of clubs!
Mindfulness & Yoga
Francescca, our French teacher, develops not only our pupils’ linguistic skills, but also teaches yoga
and mindfulness club after school as well as one to one to the children who need extra support with
their behaviour or social skills in class. Many parents and teachers commented on the positive
impact it had on the children.
Tower Hamlets Paralympics
We regularly send representatives from our school to Tower Hamlets Paralympic Event. They are
engaged in a variety of sports and get to know children from other schools. The event is VERY
competitive but there’s also an incredibly friendly and supportive atmosphere!
Minder the Dog
Minder the Dog from ‘Pets At Therapy’ comes to our school every Monday and he loves listening to
stories! The children take turns to read to him and of course the best part is having a big fluffy
cuddle!
Working in partnerships…with parents
The parents often ask for help or explanation how we teach the children maths and reading at
school, especially in Early Years and Y1. We therefore organised some workshops to support our
parents; they were well attended with 100 % positive feedback.
Walking Club
Miss Sands, our PE & Healthy Schools Coordinator, started a Walking Club for the parents. They
meet every Friday after they dropped the children off and then they walk around Wapping and
further up. Many parents said that it really increased their fitness and that it was fun being together.
As a result of this workshop I will spend
better quality time doing the reading, lead
by example by doing more reading myself.
The explanation of how to blend and sound
out the words was helpful! Great
presentation.
(Elina) I speak English as a second language and
it was a great help to attend the
workshop.
I found the information about bedtime reading
interesting. When reading, I will add more
sounding when using phonics, include more key
words when talking about the story.
I find number work extremely difficult to help
the girls. I would like to attend a workshop for
number skills.
Working in partnerships…with our business partners
Our business partners from Society Generale come to our school on weekly basis to work with the
individual children or groups.
In December the Art club made Christmas decorations for our business partners and a group of our
children were invited to go and decorate a Christmas tree in Society Generale in the City. They also
enjoyed a meal there with the partners.
St Peter’s General Election
Before the 2017 general election Maria from Y4 approached Mrs Dickson with an idea to have St
Peter’s election. She then prepared a power point presentation on the main candidates and their
manifestos. In the afternoon, the children were taken to the ‘boots’ and voted for their chosen
candidates.
I voted for Green because they said they
wanted to keep little children safe.

Bike club
Our school has been given bikes and so Miss Sands and Mr Jabbar started a lunchtime bike club for
KS2 children in the playground. For some of the pupils it was the first time they had a chance to ride
a bike or practice their skills. Towards the end of the year Natalia from Y3 got a Special Mention
certificate because she kept persevering and has learnt to ride a bike without the stabilisers!
