¶Entrance Hymn - Sung by All

1. How shall I sing that Majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I?

3. Enlighten with faith's light my heart, inflame it with love's fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite.

2. Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face. They sing because thou art their Sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be.

4. How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere.

Music: COE FEN - Ken Naylor (1931-91) Words: John Mason (1646-94)

THE ORDER OF MASS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen. The Lord be with you.

All And with thy spirit.

All Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is

one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee.

¶Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir

Κyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy Christe Eleison Christ, have mercy Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy

¶Gloria in Excelsis - Sung by All

¶Collect for the First Sunday after Trinity s

¶Collect for the Sunday Next Before Advent

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. ¶Old Testament Lesson Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord our righteousness. Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that they shall no more say, The Lord liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out

of the land of Egypt; but, The Lord liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.

Jeremiah 23 v. 5-8 ¶Gradual Psalm

I will hearken what the Lord God will say concerning me : for he shall speak peace unto his people, and to his saints, that they turn not again. For his salvation is nigh them that fear him : that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met together : righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall flourish out of the earth : and righteousness hath looked down from heaven. Yea, the Lord shall shew loving-kindness : and our land shall give her increase. Righteousness shall go before him : and he shall direct his going in the_way.

Psalm 85 v. 8-end

¶New Testament Lesson

He hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; and, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Colossians 1 v. 13-20

¶Gradual

¶Gospel Acclamation

His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away

and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Dignus est Agnus qui occisus est, accipere virtutem, et divinitatem, et sapientiam, et fortitudinem, et honorem. Ipsi Gloria et imperium in saecula saeculorum.

Worthy is the lamb that was slain, to receive virtue and worship, and wisdom, and strength and honour. To him be glory and power for ever and ever.

¶The Gospel

The Lord be with you: All And with thy spirit.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John: All Glory be to thee, O Lord. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

John 6 v. 5-14

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

¶Sermon The Rev’d Nevsky Everett

Chaplain of Keble College

¶Nicene Creed - Sung by All

¶Intercessions

The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. ¶Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things,

judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen.

¶Invitation to Communion

Christ triumphant ever reigning See Next Page

1. Christ triumphant, ever reigning, Saviour, Master, King, Lord of heaven, our lives sustaining, hear us as we sing: Yours the glory and the crown, the high renown, the eternal name.

3. Suffering servant, scorned, ill-treated, victim crucified! death is through the cross defeated, sinners justified:

2. Word incarnate, truth revealing, Son of Man on earth! power and majesty concealing by Your humble birth:

4. Priestly King, enthroned for ever high in heaven above! sin and death and hell shall never stifle hymns of love:

5. So, our hearts and voices raising through the ages long,

ceaselessly upon You gazing, this shall be our song:

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death :thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God : in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come : to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants : whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy Saints : in glory everlasting. O Lord, save thy people : and bless thine heritage. Govern them : and lift them up for ever. Day by day : we magnify thee; And we worship thy Name : ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord : to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us : have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us : as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have I trusted : let me never be confounded.

NOTICES Pusey House's annual service of Lessons and Carols for Advent will take place at 5.30pm on Tuesday of 8th Week. Accompanied by the House's excellent choir, the service will prove to be an edifying and inspiring way to begin to appreciate the riches of Advent and to look forward to the Christmas season... Following the service, lashings of mulled cyder and other refreshments will be served in the Hood Room. All are most welcome! Please speak to the Chaplain or Principal if you would like to explore the possibility of being baptized or confirmed. The next confirmation will be on Sunday, 28 May. Ritualed Knowing: our Michaelmas (Weeks 3-8) discussion group this term is considering the idea of ‘liturgy as the consummation of philosophy’, and what it might mean for our study or our prayer that all our knowing is ultimately something we do with our bodies. All are most welcome, continuing this Monday at 6pm-7pm in the Hood Room. Bring your thinking caps. We’ll provide the coffee. Recollection Lectures: The last of this term’s Recollection lectures will take place on Wednesday of 8th, 30 November. Metropolitan Kallistos Ware, Assistant Bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, and sometime Spalding Lecturer of Eastern Orthodox Studies at the University of Oxford, will give a talk entitled "St Isaac the Syrian: Prophet of the Inner Life". Please note the new times of the Recollection Lectures: Tea and coffee at 3.30pm, with the lecture beginning at 4.00pm Daily Offices begin with Matins at 7.40am with mass celebrated at 8.00am, followed by a light breakfast. A ten minute pause for prayer and reflections takes place in the chapel at noon during the week. Evensong is sung at 5.30pm, Monday to Friday (with Benediction on Friday). All are warmly invited to worship with us. Compline by Candlelight: Compline is a quiet reflective service for the ending of the day. Do join us at 9:30pm on Tuesday.

Volunteers Wanted for SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) We are looking for volunteers to help with an emergency night shelter for homeless people in Oxford, for when the temperature drops to zero for three successive nights. The shelter will be at New Road Baptist Church, in Bonn Square. Pusey House is helping to coordinate this provision and so we are appealing for people who could work either: during the day to set up, the evening 7.00 – 10.00, overnight 10.00 – 6.00 or morning 6.00 – 8.00. SWEP could happen at any time and so we are looking for a large pool of volunteers to ensure that we have enough volunteers to cover these shifts. Volunteers will be contacted by telephone on the day, and training will be given. This is a challenging but also exciting opportunity to show God’s love to the poorest of our city. If you are interested in helping, or just want to know more, please contact: April at [email protected] , 01865 240940, or James at [email protected] letting them know your contact telephone number. Common Good: Developing a Lifestyle of Compassion. On Thursday of 7th week, 24th November, we will be holding the second of our evenings of food, discussion, and silent prayer for all who are involved, or would like to be involved, in our community-service initiative, please join us from 6-7.30 pm in the Hood Room. Chamber Organ: Pusey House is grateful for the use of the chamber organ (built by William Church in 1980), on loan this term from the Faculty of Music. We would like to offer a special thanks to Professor Michael Burden, Chair of Faculty, Dr Owen Rees, and the Provost and Fellows of Queen’s College

Vulgate Group: A few members of the community are interested in resurrecting the Vulgate reading group. We would meet one evening per week for some Latin, cheese and wine. If you are interested, please contact the music office ([email protected])

If you think you have lost anything in Pusey House please check with the office by stopping in or by emailing [email protected].
