North Valley Mountain Film Festival It takes a special kind of person to climb and ski two

million vertical feet in 266 days. Revelstoke-based ski mountaineer Greg Hill drops by as a special guest pre-senter at the 6th annual North Valley Mountain Film Fes-tival on Saturday, March 3 in New Denver. One of the world’s most accomplished ski-touring endurance ath-letes, Hill shares his tale about this ultimate achievement in 2010. In addition, the festival promises another amaz-ing lineup of mostly local fi lms and photography that will inspire and awe the audience. Mark it on your calendars and see you at the Bosun Hall!

Th e Festival audience will fi nd local fl avour in fi lms such as Crossing Over: Th e Art of Jeremy Down. Th is beautiful fi lm by Mike Bernard is a remarkable account of a local artist’s near drowning experience on Slocan Lake and how it changed his perspective on his art and life. Local youth and up-and-coming videographers Yoan Shandro-Gosselin (Young and at ‘Er’) and Quade Nichol-son-Chodat (Snow D aze) will debut their ski fi lms.

A couple of alumni presenters this year including kay-aking fi lm guru Carl Jacks returns with the world premier of Deep Runs the Canyon, the culmination of his eff orts to document our local canyons to prevent them from be-coming hydroelectric projects. Audience members will look forward to two wildlife photography presentations: one by festival favourite, Jim Lawrence returning with Kootenay Wild II, and a second by local presenter Jesse Schpakowski.

Mountain biking is well-represented in the lineup this year as New Denver resident Gary Parkstrom pre-sents Songlines – a fi lm that highlights the riding of local Councillor Nadine Raynolds through Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Jesse Schpakowski brings us a second slide-show featuring the talents of New Denver mountain bik-ers Atli and Rylan Bokstrom, Max Bonazo and another local Councillor, Dave Hodsall.

Th ree more diverse fi lms include: Surge Freerun by Liam Barnes, a high-energy tour through Rossland fea-turing two parkour (yes, it is a word) athletes; Mt As-siniboine a mountain heritage fi lm by Juerg Martig; and Our Bus by Burton resident Jo Anne Alaric, a funny yet poignant look at living in a remote mountain commun-ity.

Tickets for the festival can be purchased at Silverton Building Supplies and Rutabaga’s in New Denver. Th e event typically sells out, so get your tickets in advance ($5 to $15 sliding scale; children under 10 are free). Th is year’s event is a fundraiser for the North Slocan Trails So-ciety, so proceeds from ticket sales will benefi t local trails. In addition, a raffl e will be held, and popcorn, pizza and goodies by Christopher Love will be available at conces-sion.Th ere will also be a Viewers’ Choice Award this year! Don’t forget to vote for your favourite movies.

Doors open at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 7 pm...see you at the festival!

Write An Earth Hour AnthemTh e World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is calling on Can-

adians to create the world’s fi rst crowd-sourced anthem for the environment to celebrate Earth Hour 2012. A pro-fessional songwriter will work with the public to create an original Earth Hour song, selecting lyrics submitted by individuals and writing a tune that everyone will be proud to sing on Saturday, March 31st, starting at 8:30 p.m.

“Th e anthem challenge is going to be incredible,” ex-plains Kate Conrad, Earth Hour manager at WWF Can-ada. “Canadians are passionate about action on climate change and we are also quite an artistic and musically tal-ented bunch. I’m looking forward to seeing how citizens from coast to coast can come together to create a song that really captures that passion.”

If you join the movement and submit a rhyme, a poem, or description of why you love the planet, your lyric could be a part of WWF’s Earth Hour anthem. You could hear your lyric on the radio and sung by thousands of Can-adians during Earth Hour.

Th is year, join the team and show your support for ac-tion on climate change. You can learn more about the song challenge by visiting Facebook.com/WWFCanada or wwf.ca/EarthHour. Th e fi nal song will be performed at a special concert on Saturday, March 31 in Toronto.

Hello everyone who reads Pet of the Week!My name is Wylie and I am a one year old neutered brindle boxer mix. I was a stray who was found in the Salmo area, and came to the Trail shelter to live until I fi nd my new family. So far, I love anyone who goes by my kennel door. I am very excitable so sometimes I may intimidate people when I jump up and reach for them. I am just a big puppy who hasn’t had a lot of training to speak of so I have developed some naughty habits. To name some, I am still in the process of being potty trained, which may be a sign that I have lived most of my life outside on a chain where potty training wasn’t taught to me. I love toys, ripping them up mostly, so I may try to chew things in my new home if I am left inside all by myself. Crate training would clear that up, and give me a safe place to be when I am at home on my own.

I am in the market for an owner who knows I need to be retrained on almost everything. Basic obedience classes would go a long way with me, and I will be a better dog for it.I would probably be okay in a home with another spayed female dog, but I am dominant, so a male dog and I wouldn’t mix. My background also shows the shelter staff here that I can’t go to a home with cats or small children, as my high energy could cause an accident to happen and I or my new owners wouldn’t like that.So all in all, I am a sweet boy who really wants to please the right owners. I know I have a lot to learn, but think of me as a diamond in the rough. I am young and ready for my new home where I know I will fi nd patience and love. Please come to the Trail BCSPCA and meet me. I am the big guy who loves to jump up to greet you!

Waneta Expansion ProjectReaches Milestone

Partners in the Waneta Expansion Project – Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation, and Columbia Basin Trust – are pleased to announce a major milestone has been reached with the completion of powerhouse excavation.

Th e contractor, SNC-Lavalin Inc., has been working hard to complete excavation in the powerhouse area so construction of the powerhouse can begin.

In total, approximately 230,000 cubic metres of overbur-den and 141,000 metres of rock were removed (loading more than 50,000 trucks) and quarried within seven kilo-metres of the site. Th e rock will be available for reuse in fu-ture highway and other infrastructure projects in the area.

“Completion of the excavation at the powerhouse site is a signifi cant milestone in the construction of this $900 million project,” says Audrey Repin, spokesperson for the Waneta Expansion Project. “Over one year into the pro-ject, the owners are pleased with the progress and appreci-ate the eff orts of each and every person working to make the project a success.”

Th e viewing area across Highway 22A has temporar-ily closed due to slippery conditions, but will reopen so the public can safely view the project once conditions im-prove. Th e owners thank the contractor for constructing this viewing area which has seen heavy traffi c since open-ing last summer.

Early this year, the project will see completion of tun-nel and intake excavation, assembly and installation of the travelling form for the tunnel linings, and continued con-crete work in the powerhouse and service bay areas.

Th e project is focused on a high standard of safety, qual-ity and environmental protection and is committed to de-livering local benefi ts. Currently, more than $72 million has been injected into the local economy through the pur-chases of goods and services, and there are over 200 em-ployees working directly on the project. Of these, 80 per cent are local and 11 per cent are self-identifi ed in equity groups. Th e $900 million project is expected to provide $200 million in wages and benefi ts and the equivalent of more than 400 jobs during its construction.

Th e Waneta Expansion Project is a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation, and Columbia Basin Trust. For more information please visit: www.columbiapower.org/wanetaexpansion.

Film Collection To Be PreservedOne of the largest private fi lm collections in Canada,

which provides a fascinating document of rural B.C., will be housed and preserved by UBC Library thanks to a gen-erous donation from the Halleran family and the support of community partners including Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). Th e Halleran Collection, valued at $750,000, con-sists of about 250 nature-oriented video programs pro-duced in British Columbia over the decades – fi rst by Mike Halleran and then by his son Terry.

Th ese shows, known collectively as the Westland ser-ies, were broadcast by the Knowledge Network from 1984 to 2007. Th ey examine a broad range of issues associated with forestry, fresh water fi shing, endangered species and ecosystem restoration. Th e donation also includes an ex-tensive library of 2000 source tapes.

Terry Halleran donated the bulk of the collection to UBC Library, and the remainder was purchased. Halleran was introduced to the Library by Don Laishley, a UBC alumnus and member of the Library’s Advisory Board.

“We took a lot of pride in what we did. It wasn’t always easy, but we believed in environmental education,” says Halleran. “UBC Library was the obvious choice for us, considering the long-standing relationship between our series and the expertise UBC faculty and students brought to the table.”

Halleran notes that the Westland programs have been used as teaching tools in classrooms at UBC and elsewhere since the 1980s. Th e programs also feature some former UBC faculty members.

“We anticipate that with increasing interest in natural re-source management, environmentalism and sustainability, this collection will be of considerable interest to a variety of researchers at the University and the broader commun-ity,” notes Chris Hives, University Archivist.

Columbia Basin Trust is providing $100,000 to support the acquisition and digitization of the Westland series tapes.

“We’re delighted to contribute towards preserving the col-lection and making it available to all to study, refl ect on and simply appreciate,” says Neil Muth, CBT’s President and CEO. “Th anks go to UBC for organizing this and to Terry Halleran for donating a huge portion of the collection.”

Other community partners that provided funds to sup-port the purchase of the collection include the Okanagan Region Wildlife Heritage Fund Society, the Habitat Con-servation Trust Foundation and the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

Halleran would like to recognize the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund and the British Columbia Conservation Foundation for their support with the preservation and management of the Westland series in advance of its trans-fer to UBC. University Archives staff have begun preparing an inventory to enable access to the Halleran Collection.

CBT delivers economic, social and environmental bene-fi ts to the residents of the Columbia Basin. To learn more about CBT programs and initiatives, visit www.cbt.org or call 1-800-505-8998.

Volunteering – Teens Can Share TalentsIf you know some teenagers who might be looking for

something diff erent to do, volunteering is a rewarding ex-perience and a great way to build relationships. It’s also a way to share skills and talents to really make a diff erence, say specialists in this fi eld. Th ere are many benefi ts to vol-unteering and here are a few:

Increased activity: By participating in volunteer activ-ities, you spend more time exploring the world. Volun-teering also allows you to do something diff erent outside your normal daily schedules. A volunteer activity will de-velop your leadership and teambuilding skills. You might even develop a new hobby or passion.

Learning outside of the classroom: Volunteering teaches about global and local issues. For example, involvement in activities, such as World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine, shows that there are people in the world who are not as fortun-ate, but there are simple ways to make a diff erence. Infor-mation on the 30 Hour Famine can be found at famine.ca.

Building relationships: You might meet new friends or create contacts for the future.

Environmental Surrealism Exhibition At Th e Nelson Library

If you feel the need to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming when you see the artwork of Darcy Fidgeon, you’re forgiven. Fidgeon puts a surrealist twist on the familiar in his meticulous oil paintings. Fidgeon’s highly complex works – high realism within a fantasy framework – tell stories through allegorical combinations of elements about the changes the natural world has ex-perienced through the eons.

“My approach to art-making is one of asking philo-sophical questions about our changing environment through painting,” explains Fidgeon. “Our world is being altered at the quickest pace in the history of our modern culture. What is inspiring to me is to notice these changes and then to translate that movement into a painting and record it in a fashion that hopefully defi nes that change.”

Th e artist’s educational background in environmental science and fi ne arts informs his subject matter, while his creative approach results in paintings rendered “in a manner that not only makes them visually appealing for the eye, but also intellectually appealing for the soul.”

“Th e library is all about storytelling, and thinking out-side the box,” says adult services coordinator Anne De-Grace. “In this regard, Darcy’s work is a perfect addition to our walls. It’s amazing work, and we’re thrilled to have it.”

Th e exhibition continues until the end of March.
