    Q-Probe: Deep Content Analysis Device

    For Monitoring of Digital Video Services

    Symmetricoms network probes helpoperators gain a complete view ofreal-time end-to-end network per-formance. These high-performancehardware probes collect, analyze,aggregate and report statistics forvideo and audio quality, customerflow simulations and traffic flow.

    In combination with headend ana-lyzers and management software,

    the Q-Probes are part of Symmetri-coms V-Factor QoE Platform tomonitor and analyze quality of ser-vice on virtually any network, media,topology and service all the wayfrom the headend office to the cus-tomer premises equipment.

    When it comes to IPTV and digital video services, IP core and access networks (includingvideo serving offices VSO) can play an important role in end-to-end monitoring. Impair-ments can result in poor video quality and adversely impact ability to introduce and grow criti-cal video services.

    Due to network encryption and the need to inspect content from the source and at variouspoints in the delivery path, traditional probes are not sufficient to monitor the encoder networkand specialized network probes with correlation functions are needed to examine, in real time,the quality & integrity of video content and detect impairments. In addition to monitoring net-work metrics and TS-level content metrics, network probes should dig deep into the content,

    supporting a number of key content analysis capabilities.

    Q-Probe Product Line

    Symmetricoms Q-Probes are available in three price/performance models: Q-1200, Q-400,and Q-200. Operators have the flexibility to apply the level of monitoring and processingpower appropriate to different parts of the network. Deployments can also scale since a singleinstance of the NOC software solution can control and monitor many probes.

    Q-1200: Symmetricoms new high-end probe, specifi-cally intended to monitor digital video streams and totroubleshoot the most difficult issues affecting videoquality in the headend. It combines deep pixel-by-pixelinspection of up to 16 simultaneous SD MPEG-2 videostreams providing major video artifacts detection and V-Factor analysis of up to 100 video

    transport streams, with the most flexible connectivity options, including Gigabit Ethernet,10Gbps Fiber and ASI.

    Q-400: Ideal for large IPTV and VoIP applications and deployable across backbones or largePoPs, Q-400 monitors up to 400 SD or up to 1.2 Gbps of HD H.264 IPTV / digital videostreams and up to 10,000 VoIP streams in parallel in full passive mode. It supports unicast/multicast in full passive mode, MPEG2TS for any MPEG2 or H264 IPTV stream, and audioand video scoring. It supports 10/100/1000 UTP, Gig Fiber SX and LX, 10Gbps Fiber and ASIinterfaces.

    Q-200: A highly flexible medium-performance probe, the Q-200 is designed for mid-sized IPvideo deployments to deliver performance visibility of premium services on live IP networks. Itoffers configurable test capacities of 10/100/1000 UTP and LX & SX ports. It supports TimeSynchronization Card with (best accuracy) or without GPS for enhanced IP performancemonitoring (IPPM) applications.

    Q-Probe Features and Benefits

    Flexible Product Line. With the ability of being deployed in strategic locations of the network,Q-Probes can perform headend video quality analysis and post-compression quality assur-ance.In addition, Q-Probes can be placed throughout core & metro networks for network qualityimpairments detection as well as access network & customer premise for last mile and post-decompression quality monitoring. This flexible product line meets all network needs, includ-ing Triple-Play service monitoring through additional VoIP and IPPM test solutions.

    Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). In addition to monitoring IP/RTP/MPEG2TS headers, Q-Probes dig deep into content to detect impairments in the content itself. This is critical to de-termine impact of network impairments on the content and achieve true quality of experience(QoE) monitoring.

    Symmetricom Patented V-Factor MOS Score. Along with a host of quality metrics, V-Factors Q-Probes produce a V-Factor mean opinion score (MOS) allowing operators to eas-ily gauge video quality. V-Factor is the only product available on the market that objectivelyindicates end-user video quality of experience (QoE).

    Multiple Monitoring Approaches. Q-Probes support the two basic monitoring techniques:

    Passive monitoring:Q-Probes sniff all packets and perform deep content inspection for acomprehensive service monitoring solution without impacting performance of the application.

    Active monitoring:Q-Probes can interact with applications to perform active tests to vali-date service performance. For instance, Q-Probes join a channel and assess video quality,generate and simulate end-user traffic then assess the quality for voice and IP data. For IPVideo the probes support (MPEG2, H.264 SD&HD, ETSI TR101290, DRM)

    Correlation Technology: Encrypted Network SolutionA significant challenge with end-to-end QoE monitoring in an IPTV environment is determin-ing what is happening within the IP network itself-where content is generally encrypted. V-Factor does deep content analysis on unencrypted streams at network ingress, and correlat-ing this information with Transport Stream header analysis performed in the encrypted partof the IP network, determines how network impairments impact actual video content.

    Symmetricoms Q-Probes support all relevant Internet Engineering Task Force (IEFT) per-formance standards on both IPv4 and IPv6 networks including ITU Y.1540/1541, RFC 2330,RFC 2679, RFC 2680 as well as unicast and multicast-based RTP/RTCP applications. Dy-namic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is supported for easy deployment and SecureShell (SSH) is included for security.
