hat it means tobe in Scouting

    y

    en King

    FEATURE

do, you can achieve it, because everyone hasthe same right as eachother.

Another key value of Scouting is aboutmeeting new people. There are currently 28million Scouts in theScout Movement. No-one should be left out.Everyone should beable to make friendsand meet new peopleand enjoy themselves.

    Talking of enjoyingthemselves, another

principle of Scouting istrying new experiencesand exciting activities.

Camping is a key partof everyday Scouting, and every camp bringsnew opportunities for young people. Everyonecan try their best andenjoy it at the sametime.

Every year groupshead off on their annualScout Camps, and

play games and makenew friends, as well aslearning some important

    life skills.Scouting is about

raising up the future of the young people tomake them overallrounded human beings.Let us not forget that.

It's that that helps usunderstand better whythousands of adults giveup their time each week to volunteer themselvesas leaders, helpers and

    assistants.And also the millions

of children who comealong to Beavers, Cubsand Scouts each week to have fun, makefriends and be taughtimportant life skills thatlast a lifetime.

    That's why we all doScouting.

wouldn't it be great for that to continue and toenjoy the great outdoors

for many years tocome?Another key principle

of Scouting is mostdefinitely leadership. The harsh truth ishowever, that leadersand leadership is likegold dust.

That's why it'sessential to teach young

people about how keygood leadership is, and

why it is important, andhow to use iteffectively. It could well

be the most importantvalue, and used

    properly, can be verysuccessful.

Trying new activities,is something thathappens in Scouting allthe time. It's noteveryday that they can

AS A SCOUT, we learnmany thing new things. We learn a lot aboutlife. But moreimportantly, we learn alot about values and

    principles.A key value of

Scouting, is without adoubt equality anddiversity. Whatever your skill, race, gender or hobby, everyoneshould have the right to

be treated equally.Whatever you want to

On Saturday 25 th February 2012, the Syston Scout and Guide Band put on their annual show, 'Sticks and Tones'.

Built around the notion of light entertainment, comedy and goodmusic, Sticks and Tones gave a show to truly remember.

Sketches included 'The New Generation Game', 'A MixedProgramme' and 'There's No Business Like Show Business' with eachone making for brilliant watching. John Smith, the bandmaster, wasthe compere for the evening, introducing each item with aninformative touch about what each piece was about.

There was a 30 minute interval in which 'Piloted Planes' gave a 15minute gig. They are a band formed of people from ThurmastonScout Group and after that was the raffle.

Overall it was a brilliant show and hopefully will be back next year for more fun, comedy and brilliant entertainment!

A ROYAL ROLE MODEL JOINS USHRH The Duchess of Cambridge has becomeScoutings newestvolunteer and will helpat local cub packs andbeaver colonies,Clarence House hasannounced.

The Duchess, who joins66,000 girls and 40,000

female leaders in Scouting, will help out at groups closeto where she lives. Her Royal Highness also hopesto help with activities inother parts of the UnitedKingdom as opportunityarises.

Flexible volunteeringThe announcement comesas a great endorsement of Scoutings commitment toallow adults to volunteer their time on a flexible

basis. The Duchess will helprun a variety of activitiesrelevant to her skills andinterests. This could includerunning games, teachingfirst aid or cooking oncampfires.

Chief Scout Bear Gryllsgave a delighted reaction tothe news: The Duchess hasan incredibly busy life, which makes it all the moreinspiring that she has chosento volunteer alongside us.

Over the last few years ithas been our mission tomake it easier for adultswho volunteer with us togive as much or as little asthey are able it is how wechange our society: many

    people doing a little bit.

The chance to inspireHelping give young

    people a taste of everyday

adventure through fun and practical activities, TheDuchess will have thechance to inspire the leadersof tomorrow.

Patrick, 10, a cub scout inEnfield said: I have reallygreat adventures at cubs andits all thanks to the leaderswho help out. Its amazingthat The Duchess wants to

get involved and I think shewill be really good at it.Despite six consecutive

years of growth, there is stilla need for more adults tovolunteer with us, to

provide opportunities for over 33,500 young peoplewho are waiting to join.

    Many hands make lightwork

    Adults of all ages are

finding ways to volunteer that fit in around their lives. In Manchester, Heather Baker, 29, has found aflexible solution. Thedemands of modern lifeoften mean its harder for

people to find time tovolunteer, said Heather. The role Ive just taken onis shared between four adults to make it work.

    She added, Its great that

The Duchess can find timein her schedule to helpScouting develop the livesof young people in her localcommunity. Flexibility involunteering is the wayforward.
