Dear Friends and Supporters,

We hope this update finds you well. The academic year in Zambia con-

cluded in December with several more milestone achievements for

Kucetekela Foundation (KF). All ten of our Grade 12 KF scholars gradu-

ated which continues our proud record of 100% graduation rate and a 0%

drop-out rate, now over the past six years of operation.

The achievements by our December 2011 graduates have been no less sig-

nificant. In the last several weeks, we have started to learn of university

admission decisions. Jeffrey Kanyama, KF class of 2011 and now a second

year student at African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa,

was accepted to the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY)! Two of Jef-

frey’s KF classmates, Dennis Kayebeta and Phales Mtonga were accepted to

Copperbelt University – one of the main public universities in Zambia. We

are awaiting financial aid packages and decisions for all three accepted stu-

dents but are thrilled with the news. All other graduates are still awaiting

their own decisions, particularly from the University of Zambia in Lusaka.

KF enjoyed a stable and successful 2012. The academic achievements of

our students continue to set the standard at our partner schools, Chalo Trust

School and Pestalozzi Education Centre, with multiple academic awards

earned by our students to prove it, including top academic positions and

leadership honors. Our recent graduates led the way in an expansion of

community service activities and initiatives, which have made deep impacts

in impoverished communities. Our work internship program continued its

success and now boasts high profile placements including the World Bank,

major university hospitals, international medical research institutions and

many others.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2013. KF has selected 10 new Grade

8 students who will receive scholarships and begin later this month! As al-

ways, the selection process was extremely competitive and the quality of

applicants was tremendous. For the first time in several years, KF has in-

creased the number of new students due to new and renewed long-term fi-

nancial support from partners in the U.S. and Zambia. Our program has also

made strides in cost-efficiency, ensuring that even more of each donation is

used to expand the number of students served.

Our current secondary school partners, Chalo Trust School and Pestalozzi

Education Centre, will continue in 2013. Each school has demonstrated

great commitment to our students and their success.

We wish you a wonderful 2013.

KF Post-Secondary Updates

While KF’s partner schools ensure that students are getting the highest possible quality of education for fie

years, the Foundation does not stop at high school graduation. KF’s post-secondary programming aims

to ensure that students are continuing with academic preparation, leadership development, and work train-ing after high school. With a structured gap year pro-

gram aimed at continued development and college and university application support, KF graduates are

already achieving great things.

Two KF graduates are currently studying at Afri-can Leadership Academy, an intensive two-year academic program in Johannesburg, South Africa. One of these students was recently accepted to The University of Rochester.

One KF graduate is enrolled in the United States

Achievers Program (USAP), which prepares Zambian students for applying to university in the States.

Five KF students applied to African Leadership

Academy this year. Two KF students applied to International Bacca-

laureate (IB) Programs in the UK this year. All 10 graduates are involved in gap year pro-

jects, work experience programs, or post-secondary academic programs.

If at First You Don’t Succeed... By Mary Chisala

Graduate, Class of 2011 I started my gap year in January at Mother Theresa, a teaching project where I taught young children between the ages of 2 and 6. They had a personal teacher and I was required to do a bit of work which, unfortunately, I felt was not help-ing much. This caused me to look for another opportunity to give back at Cheshire Home, where I moved to in February. This is a place where people with disabilities are taken care of. Some of them live there and others stay at their various homes. I taught one Grade 9 and four Grade 7 pupils there, but even they already had teachers and so I felt a bit redundant. After my two experiences at Mother Theresa and Cheshire Home, I still felt that I was not making as big an impact as I wanted to so I decided to move on to Chibelo Basic school. I began at Chibelo in March where I started by coaching netball. It was quite successful and our team was able to compete against two other schools. In these games, Chibelo lost one game and tied in the other. Unfortunately, I could not continue coaching netball due to the fact that the netball court was not in good shape (it had only one ring and was not demarcated). Further-more, the team had no jerseys and equipment to use, such as netballs. Because of the lack of re-sources, I decided to start teaching a group of Grade 9 students and a handful of Grade 8’s at Chibelo. This experience was quite impressive because most pupils were interested in my extra lessons and were willing to learn. Over the course of my gap year I faced a few challenges. One was finding a place to carry out my community service. I had to move from loca-tion to location and, once I found a stable place, they did not have the necessary facilities. Be-yond this, organizing the pupils was the most challenging part of gap year. This was because most of the pupils lived far from the school and were not motivated to return after lunch for ex-tra tutoring. Above all, gap year was a good experience be-cause I learned a lot about myself. I now know some of my weaknesses and strengths.

A Week at the World Bank By Vivian Lihonde (Gr.10, Chalo Trust) Firstly, I would like to thank Kucetekela Foundation for organizing my work experi-ence and the World Bank crew for accom-modating me. I really didn’t expect what I experienced at the World Bank because I had no idea what or how my work experience there was go-ing to be like. But, overcoming all odds, I had an awesome time. I had really low ex-pectations but, as my week there pro-gressed, I realized I was wrong. During my work experience, I worked with Mr. Ngoma. He used to advise me on what they do at his organization. He gave me work to do and explained many things to me. I also worked with Ngao. She was the one who taught me most things about the bank, its function, and its organizational chart. My work experience was enjoyable; the sad part is that I only was able to go for one week. I wished it could have lasted for two. I learned a lot of new things about the bank and economics. Mr. Ngoma, Ngao, and the other staff members all taught me a lot and I had an awesome time. The week was very helpful and I have decided to continue pur-suing a career in economics.
