'REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT Alumni Make the Vital Difference

It was a pleasure to install a new Delta Upsilon chapter at North Carolina State University, Raleigh this past April. This fine new chapter has accomplished a great deal in a short time, and we have expectations that they will continue that high level of achievement in the days ahead_ Especially notabie was the help and cooperation that we received from the University and Delta Upsilon alumni in the area as well as from other Delta Upsilon chapters. I hope that you will answer the call to help your own chapter or building a new one when it comes. Without alumni help there would be few new chapters.

Revivals Require Alumni Help Too

In the fall we revived the chapter at Syracuse University, and we have revival efforts underway at Michigan State University, University of Oregon, and University of Pennsylvania. In each case these projects would not be possible if it were not for the interest, support and hard work of alumni. There are a number of other campuses where we hope to reestablish a chapter of the fraternity, and all of these sites are reviewed regularly for opportunities.

What is the Vital Difference?

There has never been a strong Delta Upsilon chapter that has not benefitted from the work, interest, and yes, financial support of alumni. If you are not involved in the welfare and life of your chapter, I urge you to become 'active now. The future of your chapter depends on your help and that of your alumni brothers.

Presently we have about 4,500 undergraduates enjoying Delta U psilolJ. in chapters in Can<).da and the United States. In almost every chapter, we need three or four additional alumni to help with the day-to-day problems of management, maintenance of chapter

house physical plants, finances, insurance, legal work, college relations, alumni relations, rushing, pledge education/membership development activities, scholarship, maintaining address files and publi<shing the alumni newsletter.

While it is possible for undergraduates to do these things on their own, they can do a far better, more efficient and effective job of these responsibilities with the management expertise, maturity, continuity of management, and encouragement from alumni.

Your Help Makes the Vital Difference

The components of the fraternity's financiai -resources are such that we cannot continue as a leading fraternity without generous alumni support. That is why I hope that each of you will write your check today for the 1977-'78 alumni support program that begins this month with the start of the fraternity's fiscal year. The growing number of brothers who chose to help their fraternity in this way ensures chapter services and a role of strong leadership for Delta Upsilon among fraternities.

Fraternally yours,

Donald Watkins President

North Carolina State DU Newest Chapter Installed in Ceremonies Marking 122nd Chapter on Rolls

Delta Upsilon's newest chapter at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, was installed on the weekend of April 15-16, when Alpha Delta Upsilon Colony became the 122nd chartered chapter of the General Fraternity.

Official ceremonies began Friday evening with orientation, meeting with undergraduates and alumni, Rite One and the first chapter executive committee meeting. President W. D. Watkins, North Carolina '27, led the installation team of Ronald Coble, Purdue '58, Bob Wilson, North Carolina '76, George Krichbaum, North Carolina . '69, Robert Tybm'ski, Colgate '74, and Craig Campbell, North Dakota '76. Brothers Coble, Wilson, Krichbaum were all very instrumental in establi!lhing the chapter at North Carolina . State in one year, providing inspiration and direction to the members of Alpha Delta Upsilon.

The Rite of Installation, which took place at Forest Hills Baptist Church, was read by Brother ,!\Tatkins who presented the charter to North Carolina Sta te Chapter president John Marsland. Brother Tyburski acted as Examiner, Wilson as Chaplain, Coble as Marshall, Campbell as Assistant Marshall, while the charge to the new initiates was delivered by Brother Krichbaum. Brother Krichbaum charged the new members to "love one another, be proud, but never be satisfied."

In installing the new officers, . Brother Lewis Gregory, Kansas

'75, and former Delta Upsilon Leadership Consultant, presented

A large crowd of University officials, parents, friends, alumni and well wishel\S in general attended the installation banquet which was held at the McKimmon Center. George Krichbaum, served as the toastmaster for the festivities. Robert Grigg, Jr., father of new initiate Mark K. Grigg, gave the invocation.

' !\Telcoming the new chapter and Delta Upsilon to the University was Dr. Thomas Stafford, Jr., University Provost. Brother '!\Tatkins responded to the welcoming remarks of Dr. Stafford, as .did Brother Ron Coble on behalf of the alunmi. Brother John Marsland, speaking on behalf of the undergraduates, thanked all who attended for their part in making the installation an unforgettable ·event for all.

A number of awards, commendations, and gifts were given as the next order of business. Assistant to the Executive Director, Bob Tvburski, callecl on the delegates from the visiting Georgia Tech and North Carolina chapters to present chapter president John Ma11sland with books for the chapter library, ancl the Canadian and United States flags, symbolic of the international nature of the Fraternity. Also in attendance

were representatives from the South Carolina Colony.

Responding to the gifts, Brother Marsland expressed his deep appreciation to the members of the

.. chapter who worked diligently to make the possibility of a DU chapter at North Carolina State a reality. He thanked Dick Mann, Jerry Kirk and Dwain Burke for ·their special efforts, along with the graduating seniors Ted Charles and Steve '''Tarcl and the chapter deputy Dr. Murphy.

The chapter awarded George Krichbaum a special citation recognizing the inspiration he provided during their year as a colony. Ron Coble then was awarded a Mer i tori ou s Service Award, Delta Upsilon's highest order of recognition, for · the efforts he put in to see that the colony always continued down the proper path. The chapter awarded Joe Raudabaugh a special. plaque "In appreciation for makmg our

. dreams come true." Brother Lewis Gregory, who

started the colony effort one year ago, was the fina'l speaker for the evening. He charged the members of the cnew chapter to think of the period they are now entering as a period of re-committing themselves to the purposes and ideals of the Fraternity.

The inspirational activities of the weekend were impressive and enjoyable for everyone in attendance, but it was especially meaningful for the undergraduates and alumni who . represented the earnest efforts of the many who had a dream and a goal.

How Your Alumni Support Check Now Helps y ou~ Fraternity Get a Head Start on the School Year

One of our very good, loyal DU brothers, who always writes a generous check for the annual alumni support appeal, asked me recently why we don't operate our annual alumni support program on the calendar year basis-January to December-as many colleges do.

His logic was that people are used to this calendar year schedule, and it makes sense, except we need your help most in the months of July, August, September and October, when our costs of preparing to start the year to help chapters open is greatest, when the expenses of providing vital services to alumni continue, even though all other income is at its lowest point.

So our Pelta Upsilon alumni support appeal year is beginning this month, and that gives a six month head start over other appeals-which is as good a reason as any to give now ... avoiding the . year-end rush in December!

Improving the services and activities for yon, for your chapter, that's what alumni support is all about, and 4,500 undergraduates count on your help to keep Delta Upsilon a leader.

Make the right step now, by writing that alumni support check today and mailing it, as you can see from our HONOR ROLL of givers through April t 1977*, you're in great company.

Fraternally yours,

*11 you gave ale?' May 1, 1977, you will be listed in the October issue 01 the magazine. Please let us know 01 any omissions in this, the largest alumni support HONOR ROLL to date.

Books by and about brothers

Richard W. Olshavsky Carnegie '62

No More Butts: A Psycholo. gist's Approach to Quitting Ciga. rettes, Richard W. Olshavsky, Carnegie '62, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Indiana, 1977, 181 pp., $10.00.

Richard Olshavsky, a consumer psychologist and associate professor in the Indiana University School of Business, who usually directs his skills toward discov e ring why people buy things and how to get them to buy does just the opposite in his newly released book No More Butts.

After five years of research on smoking, Dr. Olshavsky has developed a two-step quitting process that every would be non-smoker will be able to identify with and follow.

Step one of his method involves understanding your physiological dependence on nicotine, your rationalizations for continued smoking and the

62

escaptist behavior that keep you a smoker.

Once these rationlizations are squarely faced and understood, a smoker may begin step two by selecting the quitting strategy that best fits his needs and circumstances.

DELTA UPSILON QUARTERLY' July 1977

ARE YOU SPENDING TOO MUCH FORYOUR

LIFE INSURANCE? Group insurance makes a difference.

Simply put, products usually cost less when -you buy a carload rather than just one. It's almost the same with supplemental life insurance.

Of course we don't suggest cancelling your present coverage, Delta Upsilon does represent mass buying power. And to an insurance company, that means savings in selling, underwriting and claims processing. With the Delta Upsilon Group Life Plan those functions can be done on a "batch" basis. And the economies of streamlined group administration are passed along to individual alumni who are covered under the plan.

What it all means is that you can supplement your present insurance program without emptying your wallet.

And supplementing your present life insurance is a good idea for most of us. Especially with inflation nibbling away at the value of our benefit dollars.

Bigger than life life insurance. The Delta Upsilon Group Life Plan is more than

economy. It's impressive supplemental benefits, too. Here's what we mean. The Delta Upsilon

Group Life Plan offers:

• Up to $40,000 of group term life insurance. • Double benefits for accidental death. • Benefits for dismemberment. • Disability benefits which pay a monthly amount

for total and permanent disability. • Family coverage and waiver of premium during

disability. And it's all available to individual alumni at

surprisingly economical group rates. It'll cost you just the price of a postage

stamp to find out ' more about the Delta Upsilon Group Life Plan. Just complete the coupon below and mail it to our administrators. You're under no obligation, naturally.
