Creating An Original Framework

• What is Experimental Design?• According to Barry Gribbons

National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing => evaluate the effectiveness and impact of programs so that progress can be tracked and hopefully proven against extraneous variables.

• Attempting to reduce and maybe control threats to internal validity

Experimental Design cont’d

• Experimental Research - An attempt by the researcher to maintain control over all factors that may affect the result of an experiment. In doing this, the researcher attempts to determine or predict what may occur.

• Dependent Variable => outcome variable => i.e. which candidate you vote for

• Independent variable => influences or treats Dependent variable => examples = party lines, race, immigration stance, abortion, taxes, peers, parental influence, retired, war in Iraq, favorite color (Fraenkel and Wallen 283.)

So Then…Quasi-Experimental Design is….?

• Commercial – Mashed potatoes – Just like mom used to make but no randomization.

• Actually used in educational research when money is running low or randomization is not an option

• Ryan Effect II => testing to see whether technology is connected to higher test scores but classes are already assigned and schedule is set

Different Types

• Matching-Only Design

• Counterbalanced

• Time-Series Design

• Factorial Design– With randomization– Without randomization

Non-equivalent groups design

• => Pre-test and post-test for a treated and comparison group.
