Such is the importance of Aristia
(Lonhro) to the success and
subsequent growth of First Light
Racing that the Group 1-winning
mare has a farm set up by the Melbourne
syndicator named in her honour.
And Tim Wilson, the principal of First
Light Racing who races the Mathew Ellerton
and Simon Zahra-trained VRC Oaks (Gr 1,
2500m) winner, hopes that the five-year-old
can deliver more highlights on the racetrack
before the valuable broodmare prospect is
sold.
Aristia will run first-up in Saturday’s P B
Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield after
being given the tick of approval after her jump-
out performance at Flemington yesterday in heat
three over 800 metres. Continued on page 2>>

She has not raced since finishing
seventh in the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on March
20 which brought an end to her three-start summer-autumn campaign.
“She ran second-up in the All-Star Mile in the autumn and things
didn’t go her way that day and that was when Covid first broke out
everywhere in Australia,” Wilson said yesterday.
“The team backed her up in
six days and gave her a run at
Moonee Valley with the fear that
racing would be put on hold
for a period of time. As a result,
we ended up putting her in the
paddock at the end of March, so
she’s had a ten-week spell which
she’s never had in her life.
“She’s always had that good
horse’s problem whereby one
carnival ends and the next one
comes up so quickly that you are
always racing against the clock,
so for her to have ten weeks in
the paddock is unheard of.
“Every sign so far is that
she’s in for her best campaign
probably since her three-year-
old spring preparation (when she
won the VRC Oaks). Her trial this
morning was sensational. She
was never off the bit and she’s
gone across the line about half a
length off Pretty Brazen and she
had Hanseatic behind her and
Jamie (Kah, jockey) was like a
statue on her.”
While optimistic about the prospects of Aristia breaking her losing
streak dating back to her 2018 VRC Oaks win, Wilson suggested that
connections may look to avoid the top-line open company horses this
campaign.
The Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), a fillies and mares race she
finished runner-up to Melody Belle (Commands) in last year, looms as a
probable target.
“If she ran top three on Saturday you could put her down that old,
traditional race path or, if she’s not quite up to it on Saturday, you can go
to the Empire Rose,” Wilson said.
“There’s a 1400-metre race in two weeks and then we will use the Let’s Elope
on September 12 as a mid-range target for her.

SHE’S ALWAYS HAD THAT GOOD HORSE’S PROBLEM WHEREBY ONE CARNIVAL ENDS AND THE NEXT ONE COMES UP SO QUICKLY THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS RACING AGAINST THE CLOCK, SO FOR HER TO HAVE TEN WEEKS IN THE PADDOCK IS UNHEARD OF- TIM WILSON
Melody Belle SPORTPIX
“The beauty of her now is that the
sunset clause has kicked in for her on those set weights and penalties
races. Last spring it was tough as everywhere we went with her she had 59
kilograms but now … she will be back to the minimum because she hasn’t
won a stakes race for 18 months.”
The way Aristia, who was bred by Greg Perry under his Greenwich
Stud banner, has returned after a lengthy spell has Wilson convinced that
he and his fellow owners have made the right call to race on the daughter
of Lonhro (Octagonal) for another season rather than selling her as a well-
credentialled broodmare prospect.
“She didn’t win a race last season but she still won $250,000 in prize-
money, so it’s a balancing act for the owners, but in my opinion selling
her off the track at the end of her five-year-old season is the prime time to
realise her residual value,” he said.
“You have probably got to treat these next 12 months like they are her
last, and a lot of good mares have raced on into their six-year-old season,
but she’s probably got to give us a compelling reason to do that because
she might lose ten per cent of her value for racing on for another 12
months and that’s a significant figure.”
How Aristia performs on Saturday will also be a guide as to what
difference First Light Racing’s investment earlier this year in a spelling
property at Koo Wee Rup, south east of Melbourne, is making to its racing
team.
Named after the syndicator’s Group 1 winner, Aristia Park is a purpose-
built horse property with a capacity for 120 horses, sand training tracks,
an equestrian area, tie-ups and round yards overseen by farm manager
Marnie Holloway.
“It’s brand-new for us. We took ownership of it in March and it’s just
such an asset. It’s probably not a coincidence but the first two horses that
have raced off that farm who have spelled there were Squami and Rich
Hips,” Wilson said.
“Squami won first-up and Rich Hips went to Sandown and won first-
up and she’s in for a ‘career prep’ as well. Aristia will be the third horse
to go to the races off the property. The first two have won and they have
improved out of sight.”
Wilson praised Holloway for the way she has managed the horses
since taking on the role, describing her as “a magician”.
He said: “We’ve had some
fantastic partners along the way
but our vision has always been
for First Light to do everything
end-to-end and it gives us a
great opportunity now to get our
clients involved in breeding if
they want to go down that path.
“The horses are always in
our care and we see it as a huge
client entertainment facility
in due course. It’s a beautiful
property and I’d love to be doing
yearling parades and having owners out there offering accommodation.
They can come out and spend the night, then do the feed run in the
morning and have a bit of fun.”
Wilson, in conjunction with agent Paul Willetts, meanwhile, came
away with six new season two-year-olds at last week’s Magic Millions
National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast headed by a $100,000 Dundeel
(High Chaparral) colt out of Group 1-winning mare Alverta (Flying Spur)
and a $52,000 All Too Hard (Casino Prince) filly out of Group 3-winning,
Group 1-placed Galapagos Girl (Dehere). The All Too Hard filly is a
half-sister to last season’s Gerald Ryan-trained stakes winner Villami
(Foxwedge).
“We had so many new owners come in this year with one, two and
three degrees of separation from existing First Light owners or even just
new people. We’ve still been able to have a good year despite Covid,” he
said.
“We haven’t overbought and we were fortunate with … the Magic
Millions sale being pushed all the way out to August, that really worked
for us.
“That sale is normally in May/June and in May we are usually carrying
a lot of stock but by the time we got to August our numbers were quite
low and we were looking at September and October and thinking that we
won’t have any stock to offer.
“We bought six up there and we could have easily grabbed a couple
more.”

AUSTRALIA
Lawrence return for Cape Of Good HopeAfter trialling at Flemington yesterday, Lindsay
Park’s Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner
Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo) will begin his
spring campaign in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes
(Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, with
the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) his
current aim. "He's had a good break and has
come back in nice and sound," co-trainer Tom
Dabernig said. "He arrived in Australia in good
form winning the Caulfield Stakes but last
campaign his feet were the issue and he was
taking on reasonable company. His feet have
improved. Remember Redkirk Warrior had
trouble initially with his feet when he came
from Hong Kong and we managed to get him
right and I think this is a similar situation. We've
addressed the issue and he'll have his chance to
show his best form."
Lane to ride Arcadia QueenDamian Lane has secured the ride on star
Perth mare Arcadia Queen (Pierro) this
spring as she returns from an injury sustained
in last year’s Golden Eagle (1500m). The
five-year-old and her All Star Mile (1600m)-
winning stablemate Regal Power (Pierro) are
set to kick off their campaigns in Saturday’s
P.B. Lawrence Stakes. "She's sound now,"
owner Bob Peters told Racing.com. "She
got knocked down in The Golden Eagle and
the adrenalin kicked in so she got up again,
obviously over-exerted herself to still finish
off well to run fifth. Unfortunately, that
caused a lot of tearing of muscles and things
like that in her back and she had a long
time in rehabilitation to get her back. Race
pressure will tell the story. So far it's been
good but it took from November until May to
get her over it all.”
Larimer Street to kick off in VainThe Trent Bussitin and Natalie Young-trained
Larimer Street (Brazen Beau), who finished
third in the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL,
1100m), will kick off his spring campaign
in Saturday’s Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at
Caulfield, and the stable will determine his
future targets based off how he runs this
weekend. "He'll get the chance to paint the
picture for the rest of the spring with what he
does first-up," Bussitin told Racing.com. "He
was good in the autumn. He should have won
the $2 million race in Sydney, although it was
only a restricted race. He then won that Listed
(St Albans Stakes) race at Moonee Valley really
well then we kept the blinkers on for the Group
1 Sires' (Randwick) so we just put a line through
that as he just over-raced terribly. The Caulfield
Guineas or the Coolmore (Stud Stakes) are at
the top of the tree for him this spring but we are
a long way from being a Listed winner to getting
to one of those races. But he'll get his chance to
tell us he is."
Ryan focused on Sydney with three-year-oldsThe Covid-19 pandemic is likely to keep many of
Sydney's best horses at home in the short-term
but that prospect holds no concerns for Rosehill
trainer Gerald Ryan. "Early on it has changed
things, but there is too much good racing,
prestige racing here in Sydney to worry about
going to Melbourne," Ryan said. "Sure, there are
good races (in Melbourne) later on. You've got
the Blue Sapphire, the Caulfield Guineas, the
Coolmore Stud Stakes. But there are enough
races here to worry about Sydney first, then
what gets to Melbourne, you can worry about
later on." Ryan's Peltzer won his three starts at
the end of the autumn, including back-to-back
victories at Randwick. The colt is due to barrier
trial later this month before he resumes in the
San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill
on August 29 before tackling the Run To The
Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) two weeks later, ahead of the
$1 million Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on
September 26. All three races are at his home
track of Rosehill, a course Ryan hopes he likes
as much as he does Randwick. "The majority
of my three-year-olds this year, their races are
going to be at Rosehill on their home track," the
trainer said. "I just hope Peltzer goes as well at
Rosehill as he does at Randwick because he is
unbeaten at Randwick."
Elleegant ready for Cups campaignChris Waller has trodden a patient path with
Verry Elleegant (Zed) and he believes it has
readied her for the rigours of a Cups campaign.
The stable managed her carefully as a spring
four-year-old last year and did not extend
her beyond the distance of the Cox Plate (Gr
1, 2040m). But a solid, five-start autumn
campaign, highlighted by a Tancred Stakes (Gr
1, 2400m) victory, has given Waller confidence
the mare is seasoned enough for a Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,
3200m) preparation. "We held her back last
year to try and help her develop, which she has
done physically as well as mentally," Waller
said. "Whilst she would have got into the Cups
last year with a much better weight, I am now
sure she is capable of not only coping with the
preparation required, but also the race itself."

Behemoth’s connections on weather watchThe Adelaide weather will be the determining
factor in where Listed winner Behemoth (All
Too Hard) will make his return to racing. The
David Jolly-trained five-year-old looked sharp
when winning a Balaklava trial last week and is
among the nominations for Saturday’s Spring
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville. Grand
Syndicates racing manager Sam Lyons said the
plan was to stay in Adelaide, but the prospect
of rain could yet see the gelding rerouted to
Melbourne.“The Regal Roller (at Caulfield)
is the back-up plan,’’ Lyons told theracessa.
com. Behemoth finished well to run fourth in
last year’s Regal Roller Stakes (Listed, 1200m)
before returning to Adelaide and winning
the Penny Edition Stakes (Listed, 1400m). He
finished his last campaign with a fourth in the
Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).
Russian Camelot impresses in jump-outSouth Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner
Russian Camelot (Camelot) impressed Danny
O’Brien in his jump-out win at Flemington
yesterday and his likely first-up run will be
the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Flemington on September 12. "We're very
happy with him," O'Brien told Racing.com. "We
were hoping that there would be a bit of tempo
in his heat so that he could fall back a bit. But
they went particularly slowly, and he was right
up on the speed the whole trial. Damien Oliver
(jockey) slipped him a little bit of rein late and
let him stretch his legs and he went through his
gears nicely and had a nice gallop on what is a
beautiful surface. Damien reported back that
he was very happy with him, he said he thought
he was a bit above himself and very fresh, which
is to be expected, he's a colt and he's in great
shape physically. He was really pleased with the
feel he got from him this morning.”
McEwen first-up for HanseaticBlue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up
Hanseatic (Street Boss) had has first jump-out
of the spring at Flemington yesterday, finishing
fourth on the bridle under Jye McNeil, and
his co-trainer Sam Freedman confirmed the
three-year-old would resume in next month’s
McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m). “He was good,
he was fresh and full of himself in the run,”
Freedman told Racing.com. “He’s a busy
character, especially in his trials and races, he
is very full of himself but he seems to be coming
up really well. Importantly he was well behaved
at the gates, he walked straight in and that was
an area that was frustrating in the autumn. That
was a typical first jump-out from our stable, we
are never ones to push them out in trials and
now he’ll have another jump-out and then a
gallop at The Valley. He’ll be ready to go first-
up in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes and will then
be targeted at the Group 1 Moir Stakes and the
Coolmore Stud Stakes.”
Moroney pleased with TofaneAlso featuring at yesterday’s Flemington jump-
outs was the Mike Moroney-trained All Aged
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Tofane who is set
to resume in the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on
October 3. “She was pretty fresh today and we just
gave her a day out, she wasn’t there to do much,”
Moroney told Racing.com. “She’ll have another
jump-out (at Flemington) and we’ll put more
pressure on her next time. The race she’ll kick off
in is the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes down the straight
here, then there are a couple of other races here
for her. If she’s going well enough then hopefully
she’ll be (up in Sydney) for The Everest.”
Epsom-bound Tyzone shines in trialStradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Tyzone (Written Tycoon) has limbered up for
his forthcoming trip to Sydney with a solid third
in a Gold Coast barrier trial. Ridden by Robbie
Fradd, Tyzone settled fifth before working home
stylishly to place behind the Chris Waller-trained
Subpoenaed (Rip Van Winkle) in a 1000-metre
heat, beaten three-quarters of a length. Toby
Edmonds, who trains in partnership with his
son Trent, plans to lay a solid platform for the
gelding's return to racing, which is likely to be in
the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill
on September 12. His main goal in Sydney is the
Epsom Handicap (GR 1, 1600m) at Randwick on
October 3. The Epsom is also on the agenda for
Tyzone's stablemate Vanna Girl (Husson) who
finished seventh, beaten three lengths, in the
same trial as Tyzone.
1614 nominated for Blue DiamondA total of 1614 now two-year-olds have been
nominated for next year’s $1.5 million Blue
Diamond Stakes at Caulfield. Local trainers
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have the most
entries with 108, with Lindsay Park in second with
80. The Team Hawkes-trained Dio (Zoustar), the
brother to champion mare Sunlight, is among the
headlines entries along with progeny of star mares
Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) (a filly by I Am Invincible
(Invincible Spirit)), Miss Finland (Redoute’s
Choice) (a colt by Shalaa (Invincible Spirit),
trained Tom Dabernig & Ben Hayes) and the
late Miracles Of Life’s (Not A Single Doubt) final
daughter, a filly by American Pharaoh (Pioneerof
The Nile) to be trained by Snowden Racing.
Snitzel (Danehill) has the most nominations of
any stallion with 93 of his progeny entered, while
I Am Invincible (79) has the second most. Click
here to view the full entry list.
Randwick trials moved to PolytrackDue to the recent wet weather, the Randwick
barrier trials scheduled for today will now
take place on the Randwick Polytrack. As a
consequence, the 1200 metre heats will now
be staged over 1250 metres, the 1050 metres
heats become 1080 metres and the 740 metre
heats will be run over 780 metres. The first heat
will be conducted at 8.40am with 10-minute
gaps between trials. Heats 19 and 20 move
up to become heats 12 and 13 as they were
originally scheduled as Polytrack 1080m heats.
The three trials for Group-performed horses on
the Kensington Track will now be conducted on
Friday.

Rosina Kojonup heads bidding in GSS auctionA flurry of activity sent dual winner Rosina
Kojonup (Shamus Award) to the head of the
bids for the Inglis Great Southern Sale section
of August (early) Online Sale, which ends
tomorrow. A total of 17 bids had been made on
the Listed place mare, catalogued as lot 888,
with a top offer of £365,000 received. A $425,000
Inglis Easter Yearling Sale graduate, Rosina
Kojonup’s dam, Courgette (Charge Forward),
was purchased for $2,100,000 in 2018. Her
two-year-old half-brother by I Am Invincible
has been retained to go into training with the
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team. She has
a weanling three-quarter brother by Snitzel,
while Courgette is back in foal to Snitzel.
Her three-year-old three-quarter sister, Still
Reigning, an $800,000 Easter Yearling purchase,
is in-training with Gary Portelli.
Nisbet hospitalised after fallCanberra jockey Kayla Nisbet was taken to
hospital for observation after falling from
a horse at trackwork yesterday. Nisbet
momentarily lost consciousness but early
reports suggested she did not appear to have
sustained any injuries. On Sunday, Narromine
track rider David Stubbs was dislodged and
suffered concussion as a result. He was taken to
Narromine Hospital for observation.
Rockhampton trainer Rowe seriously injuredLyle Rowe, one of Queensland’s longest serving
trainers, is in hospital having suffered serious
injuries in an accident at Rockhampton’s
Callaghan Park racecourse on Friday. Rowe
was leading a horse from his stables to the tie-
up stalls on the racecourse when the accident
occurred. Although details are uncertain, it is
believed Rowe was either kicked by the horse in
the head or he suffered severe head injuries as
the result of a fall. The 79-year-old is said to have
sustained a fractured skull and bleeds on the
brain. A spokesperson for Rockhampton Base
Hospital described Rowe’s condition as “stable”
late on Sunday. Former jockey Rowe, who turns
80 next month, has trained at Rockhampton
for over 30 years, and has a team of around ten
horses in training.
Quirindi abandoned, Gosford in doubtOfficials will inspect the course at Gosford this
morning to determine whether today’s meeting
can go ahead after a further 13 millimetres of
rain yesterday fell on a track already described
as a Heavy 10. With surface water between 1500
metres to 1400 metres, steward Damien Carr
will inspect the track at 6am but the meeting
looks to be in some doubt with the Gosford
barrier trials scheduled for the following day.
Elsewhere, the fixture scheduled to take place
at Quirindi today was called off after the surface
was deemed unsuitable for racing following
heavy rainfall and no alternative venues could
be found around the Hunter & North West
region.
Postponed Port Augusta meeting to run this SundayLast Sunday’s Port Augusta meeting, which was
called off due the state of the track following the
poor weather conditions in South Australia, will
now take place this coming Sunday (August 15)
it was announced yesterday.
Vale Majorie CharlesonFormer Western Australia Turf Club
promotions officer Marjorie Charleson died on
Saturday, aged 88. Charleson spent 16 years
at the WATC where her notable achievements
included persuading connections of Kingston

third consecutive win in the Cox Plate, while
also getting premier jockeys, both from home
and abroad, to ride at Ascot, a track where the
Marjorie Charleson Classic (1200m) is now run
in her honour.
NEW ZEALAND
Cool Aza Beel sidelinedThis year’s Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) winner
Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel) has suffered a minor
suspensory injury and could be out of action
for the majority of the spring and summer.
The three-year-old colt, who is trained by
Jamie Richards, is expected

Double for boutique BisharaNicholas Bishara is delighted with the way his
boutique stable has started the new season
after a winning double at Te Rapa on Saturday,
courtesy of successes by Rising Renown
(Redwood) and Ihu (Red Element), brought his
current season tally to three wins, just two shy
of last season’s total. “It was a terrific weekend
and I just can’t believe how well I am going to be
honest,” Bishara said. “We are having a winner a
week and to get a double on a Saturday feature
meeting was great. It’s good after lockdown to
be able to get back out and get something. The
whole team is firing.”
Captainwinkletoes catches eyeJo Rathbone has been riding the crest of a
wave with quality jumper Tallyho Twinkletoe
(St Reims) and she may have unearthed
another top prospect in his half-brother,
Captaintwinkletoes (Sufficient). The four-
year-old pleased Rathbone when finishing
runner-up on debut over 2100 metres at
Hawera on Saturday where he was only just
beaten by stablemate Wotablast (Azamour).
“I was rapt with them both,” Rathbone said.
“Wotablast had a bit of a gear change just
to try and get him to try and switch on a bit
more and that obviously helped. I thought
Captaintwinkletoes would go a nice race. It’s
a big ask going 2100 metres first-up, but he
has done a lot. He is definitely a stayer, he just
needs to go over ground.”

42 for ShowcasingFormer Haunui Farm shuttler Showcasing (Oasis
Dream) sired his 42nd individual stakes winner
on Saturday when Bodhicitta (4 m ex Solfilia by
Teofilo) took out the Yellow Ribbon Handicap
(Gr 2, 8.5f) at Del Mar. Trained by Richard
Baltas, the four-year-old mare showcased an
electric turn of foot to defeat Tonahutu (Sir
Prancealot) by a nose with Harmless (Creative

away in third. Purchased for 60,000gns at last

to race out of Solfilia (Teofilo) and hails from
the family of multiple stakes winner Fracas

Collina (Strategic Prince). Showcasing, who is
also responsible for multiple Group 1 winner
Advertise, last shuttled to Haunui in 2017 but
now permanently resides at Whitsbury Manor

Options open for Messara and SkywardJohn Messara is contemplating delaying
Skyward’s (Camelot) Melbourne Cup bid for a
year so that the northern hemisphere four-year-
old can remain in the care of Fabrice Chappet.
Skyward registered his first stakes win when
taking out the Prix de Reux (Gr 3, 2500m) at
Deauville on Sunday and while his majority
owner has long held Cup ambitions for the colt,
Covid-enforced restrictions on movement of
staff could put the prospect of travelling from
France on hold for 12 months. It looks likely
that overseas-based horses will need to be
transferred into the care of local trainers to
compete in this year's Caulfield and Melbourne
Cups, a move Messara is reluctant to consider.
"I'd like to leave him with the trainer (Fabrice
Chappet) if he were to come out for a big race
like the Melbourne Cup," Messara told Racing.
com. “He could always then stay here after
running in the Melbourne Cup and then that's
another story. But I wouldn't like to take him
off the trainer that's done all the legwork and
knows him. There's a bit of thinking to be done."
Enable to miss York in favour of Kempton contestEurope’s star mare Enable (Nathaniel) is set to
swerve York's Ebor meeting and a clash with
fellow Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Love (Galileo)
in next week’s Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) as
connections plot a different route to the Prix de
l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m). The two-time
Arc winner, who was also short in the betting for
the Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m
2f) at York next week, will instead prepare for
Longchamp by tackling Kempton's September
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 4f) on the Polytrack next
month, connections have revealed. The six-
year-old racked up a record third win in the
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes
(Gr 1, 1m 4f) at Ascot last month after which
a return to the Knavesmire, where she could
have made more history by becoming the first
three-time winner of the Yorkshire Oaks, was
earmarked. Enable’s sole start between her
two Arc wins came when she took out the 2018
running of the September Stakes.

The British Horseracing Authority
has said that any formal
investigation into Phoenix
Thoroughbreds founder Amer
Abdulaziz Salman would need to be made
by the appropriate law enforcement bodies,
adding it would be happy to assist should it be
required.
Last November, British racing's governing
body said it would be "making inquiries as a
priority" into the troubled organisation and,
while confirming that queries had subsequently
been made, no further action has been taken.
A BHA spokesperson said: “The BHA
has carried out inquiries over the past few
months. Allegations of criminality are properly
investigated by law enforcement organisations,
which the BHA would always support where it
can. Our focus is on making the best use of our
regulatory role to protect participants and the
reputation of the sport.”
The Racing Post understands a similar
stance is held by French racing's regulatory
authority, France Galop, although there are
currently no Phoenix-owned horses in training
in that jurisdiction.
The global nature of Phoenix's investment
in racing since its formation in 2017 was evident
over the weekend, with the organisation
having a winner at Flemington plus a winner
at Monmouth in the USA, as well as placed
runners at Saratoga, in upstate New York.
The organisation has a significant presence
in Australia, headlined earlier this year by
William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible), who is also
nominated for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), as
well as being listed as breeders and co-owners
of Golden Slipper Stakes(Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Farnan (Not A Single Doubt).
Several yards in Britain and Ireland train
runners owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds or the
affiliated Phoenix Ladies Syndicate. Both sets of
colours were in action at the Curragh on Sunday
when Forever In Dreams (Dream Ahead) finished
third and Back To Brussels (Starspangledbanner)
fifth in the same Group 3 sprint.
Since the allegations surrounding
Abdulaziz emerged, there have been a string of
departures from the operation.
On Saturday the Racing Post revealed vice-
president and respected racing professional
Tom Ludt had cut ties, joining the likes of
bloodstock adviser Dermot Farrington and
trainers Bob Baffert and Martyn Meade.
Abdulaziz was the subject of sensational
allegations in a New York court last year, as it
was claimed he was linked to the fraudulent
cryptocurrency OneCoin.
The fake cryptocurrency was revealed to be a
global Ponzi scheme, and it is alleged money from
the scheme may have been invested in the self-
styled "world’s first regulated thoroughbred fund".
Court testimony alleged Abdulaziz and his
Phoenix Fund Investments, the Dubai-registered
parent company of Phoenix Thoroughbreds, were
a key component of the network washing money
for those behind the fraudulent scheme, which
has been described as one of the biggest financial
scams ever perpetrated.
Phoenix and Abdulaziz have categorically
denied the allegations, and he and Phoenix
representatives have declined to respond to any
specific questions submitted by the Racing Post
since November.

First season trainer Wayne Smith
enjoyed his best weekend to date
leading in four winners over the two
days of racing, three of those in big
wins on Sunday.
The speedy Chapman Way (Strategic
Maneuver) was the first of Smith’s winners on
Friday night when he led throughout to win the
Class 5 & 6 over 1200 metres under apprentice
Eric Cheung.
Fired out of the gates by Cheung, the son
of Strategic Maneuver (Royal Academy) led
clearly on the bridle. Set alight at the top of the
straight, Chapman Way had a big lead inside the
200-metre mark, and although tiring late, the
gelding held on to win by a half length over the
fast finishing Joyful Commander (Swiss Ace),
with Californiatreasure (Onemorenomore) in
third.
On Sunday’s mixed turf and sand card,
Smith struck early in race two with Knows It
All (Bachelor Duke), who bolted away for a six
lengths win in the Class 3 & 4 over 1510 metres
under Japanese rider Massa Tanaka.
Knows It All is a former highly promising
galloper that at one stage was being touted as a
potential Derby (Listed, 1800m) prospect after
winning four races from his first six starts in
Macau, from 1050 metres (sand) to 1800 metres
turf.
Formerly with Victor Chan, the gelding’s
form tapered off after April this year and he was
transferred to Wayne Smith. Sunday was his
fifth run under Smith and the son of Bachelor
Duke (Miswaki) looks to be right back at the top
of his game.
Star Of Yiu Cheung (Casino Prince) was
the next of Smith’s winners on Sunday when he
made amends for his short head Derby defeat
by romping home in the Class 2 & 3 over 1500
metres.
Ridden by Peter Ho, Star Of Yiu Cheung
never looked in doubt in the run racing away
for a four and a half lengths victory over
Association Seven (Manhattan Rain).
Star of Yiu Cheung was Smith’s first winner
as trainer back in October and is no doubt
the stable star. The impressive looking son of
Casino Prince (Flying Spur) has put together a
superb record of nine starts for four wins and
five second placings; his biggest beaten margin
has been one and a quarter lengths over 1050
metres on the sand.
The gelding was runner up in the Derby
Trial (Listed, 1500m) by a short head to Winnie
Star (Medaglia d’Oro), the Macau Guineas
(Listed, 1500m) by a half length to Hostwin
Saturn (Stratum), and the Macau Derby by a
short head to Sacred Magnate (Foxwedge).
In both the Derby Trial and the Guineas he
spoiled his chances by overacing badly.
Ocean Warrior (Ocean Park) was the last
of Smith’s winners on Sunday when Fausto
Henrique caught his rival jockeys sleeping and
pinched the 45-0 maiden over 1500 metres.
Henrique was allowed to stride away with
a six length lead over his opponents in the back
and it was obvious at the six hundred that the
race was in his keeping. The diminutive son of
the 2012 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Ocean
Park (Zabeel) ran out a six length winner over
Goal Achiever (Star Witness), with Master Of
Mars (Master of Design) in third.

Big weekend for Wayne Smith

Knows It All MJC

“I’m obviously thrilled that Star Of Yiu
Cheung won so well today after what’s been an
unlucky season for him.” Smith said.
“Ocean Warrior looks a very exciting
prospect for next season; a small horse with a
big heart and still a lot of improvement in him.
“Knows It All was a bit of a challenge when
I got him and it was great to see him winning
so well; I think we can improve him more next
season.”
Smith was full of praise for his owners and
his stable staff after Sunday’s victories.
“It’s a red letter day for the yard. I’m
totally grateful to my owners for their
patience and their support in allowing me
to take my time and not rush the horses.
Also a big shout out to my staff who are
the hardest working lads in the Club, they
totally deserve the success.”
A former Champion jockey in Dubai
where he was based for 19 years, Smith only
commenced training in September last year
and after Sunday has now a total of 14 winners
for the season, and a further 21 placings with 14
of those making the quinella spot, from a total
of 122 runners.
Japanese rider Massa Tanaka also enjoyed
a fine weekend booting home a treble over
the two days to take him to 12 winners for
the season, a great effort considering he only
arrived in January this year just before the
Covid -19 interruption to racing.
Tanaka was successful in the last of the
night of Friday on the Stephen Chow-trained
Honey Biscuit (Showcasing). The model of
consistency arrived in the nick of time to win
the Class 5 & 6 over 1510 metres.
Treasure Honey (Real Impact) was his
second winner for the weekend when he
showed plenty of fight to take out the Class 5
& 6 on Sunday, before coming out in the next
the Class 3 & 4 over 1510 metres with a big
win on Wayne Smith’s Knows It All (Bachelor
Duke).
Hard working Tanaka has firmly entrenched
himself in Macau racing after successful years
in New Zealand and Korea.

three seasons beginning in 2017 and covered
a total of 278 mares. Given current travel
restrictions, the multiple Group 1 winner

his first two-year-olds are set to hit the track
down under this season. Stutti, T O Mary and
Infinite join Kaiser Nova as first-crop winners
for Maurice, bringing his tally to four.

Vadamos stands at Rich Hill in New Zealand for
a fee of NZ $15,000 (plus GST) in 2020.
New Group / Grade 1 winners

saw the Godolphin colt burst through off
the inside rail and claim a maiden Group

AUD$41,000) in 2020.
Mayson - A surprise victory for 20-1 shot
Maystar (3 g ex Oakley Star by Multiplex) in
the Prix Moonlight Cloud (Listed, 1200m) on
Sunday saw Mayson (Invincible Spirit) claim
a seventh career stakes winner. Mayson stood
at Cheveley Park Stud for £5,000 (approx
AUD$9,100) in 2020.
Not A Single Doubt - Saturday’s Rosebud
(Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill was another
reminder of the loss Not A Single Doubt
(Redoute’s Choice) is to the Australian
breeding industry after his son Anders (3 c ex
Madame Andree by War Emblem) dominated
the $140,000 event. The 73rd individual stakes
winner for Arrowfield Stud sire Not A Single
Doubt, who was pensioned earlier this year,
Anders joins fellow Aquis Farm-owned colt, the
Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan,

Choice and Kenedna as stakes winners for the
stallion. He covered 94 mares in 2019, his 15th
and final season at stud.
Pride Of Dubai - Star Of Emaraaty (2 f
ex La Grande Elisa by Ad Valorem) sprung a

Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz) sired his eighth

Monday. Grade 1 winning sire Sir Prancealot
will stand at Cornerstone in South Australia for
a reduced fee of $9,900 (inc GST) in 2020.
War Front - O’Brien senior may have been
out of luck when his two runners finished out
of the frame in the Silver Flash, but he was soon
back in familiar territory when Military Style
(2 c ex Together Forever by Galileo) led home
stablemate Van Gogh (American Pharoah)
to take out the Tyros Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) and
become War Front’s (Danzig) 93rd individual

Farm in Kentucky for a fee of US$250,000
(approx AUD$347,000) in 2020, while his sire-
son Omaha Beach will this year shuttle to

If recent history is any guide, then
Western Australian galloper Gatting
faces a monumental task to repeat his
Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1
Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s
Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Not only does the son of Hard Spun have
to defy the usually huge odds against longshot
winners repeating, he’d become just the third
horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25
have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)
and Northerly (2002) have been successful.
Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee
Stakes winners has managed to win another race
during the spring which is verily dumbfounding
and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status
in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has
six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres
in about as many weeks.
In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes
— won this year by Homesman — has been a
much better portent of things to come through
the balance of the spring carnival.
Six of the past ten Feehan winners have
won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions
include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,
who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic
Consol who didn’t race again that year.
Four of the past five Underwood Stakes
winners have come via the Feehan including,
of course, Homesman who won last year after
finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and
he looks a superior horse in 2019.
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won
the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare
Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they
saddle another four-year-old, this time male,
in The Chosen One — who looks the principal
danger to Homesman.
The follow-up form of major race winners
is something of a fascination and generally less
impressive than you might think. Examining
the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is
interesting.
Begood Toya Mother was a fast and
spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes
albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing
him with some unexpected cover.
Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be
spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted
Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,
is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in
the past ten years] to have had an immediate
break and he returned to run second to Black
Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then
went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.
Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the
only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten
years, to score again that spring - taking the
Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy
Handicap respectively.
Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3
Naturalism Stakes has produced just two
subsequent springtime winners in the past
decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group
1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won
the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in
the Caulfield Cup.

Gatting SPORTPIX
Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last
year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a
short neck.
Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)
was one and a half lengths away in third.
The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A
Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).
"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was
warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.
"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're
going to be in this'."
It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago
after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was
delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.
It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which
almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six
months after being seriously injured last October.
"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like
getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.
"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my
broken neck it's been a long road.
"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as
rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.
"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.
"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about
him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.
"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he
could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1
million sprint.
Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course
and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes
(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly
around the turn and was able to hold off a
gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a
short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)
closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian
McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further
back in fourth.
Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative
attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.
"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism
with him than we ever got with
another certain horse [Winx]
who was probably our last Group
1 winner here.
"That's racing, everyone has
got their opinions. He's a good
horse and today he stepped away
well. James didn't panic he just
got there gradually and it was a
good race.
"You think punters get
frustrated, well owning a horse
and training a horse when you're
running in these types of races,
it's a bitter pill to take when you
don't quite get it right.
"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had
something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I
did everything wrong."
Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at
Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race
will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week
later.
"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just
see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The
Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."
Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race
while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over
the mare's performance.
McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,
two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.
"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.
"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the
race."
Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)
took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money
of $1,879,285.
