Welcome to the Backstitch April 2014 issue!!

It’s a privileged month for us, indeed!!!April 3, 2014 marks the 15th Foundation Day of the

ARCH Academy of Design. The month is also special forARCH as it observes the 3rd Anniversary of ‘Backstitch’.This time the entire ARCH family is looking forward toorganize ‘ECHO – The Arch Foundation Month’ to cele-brate its 14 year journey wherein it has grown from amere 2 room residential set-up to a full fledged institu-tion through which have passed more than 4000 Designprofessionals, as of date. Aligned with its vision, ARCHhas adopted a multi-dimensional approach to benefit di-verse communities across the globe and is mandated pri-marily to meet the skilled manpower and technologyneeds of the Design & Craft industry. Recently, on theoccasion of International Women’s Day on 8th Mar.2014, ARCH launched the 4th edition of the‘Vital Voices Global Mentoring Walk’ at Jaipur. Her Ex-cellency, Margaret Alva - Governor of Rajasthan and aVital Voices award recipient, unveiled the poster of theMentoring Walk. Recognizing the importance of “Payingit Forward” by giving back to others in the community,50 Mentors & 50 Mentees (established woman leaders &young professionals), walked with me through the Cen-tral Park to demonstrate belief in the importance ofwomen leadership and participation in society. Ms. LadKumari Jain - President, State Women’s Commission waspresent as the Chief Guest. This issue of Backstitch alsoglances at the IInd Jaipur Art Festival concluded recentlyat Diggi Palace as well as the Chr’Cha event (M’Arch OnCampaign) titled ‘Share the Creative Women in You’.With the beginning of the new financial year (2014- 15)and in furtherance to achieve the overall objective ofcommunity development, ARCH is looking forward tocollaborate with established institutions to initiate certi-fied Skill Development training Programmes for semi-skilled/ under-employed craft artisans and youths toprovide them job-oriented skills & accreditation underthe STAR Scheme, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India.

Intarsia is a knitting technique used to create pat-terns with multiple colours. As with the woodwork-ing technique of the same name, fields of differentcolours and materials appear to be inlaid in one an-other, but are in fact all separate pieces, fit togetherlike a jigsaw puzzle.Knitting in intarsia theoretically requires no addi-tional skills beyond being generally comfortable withthe basic knit and purl stitches. Materials requiredinclude multiple colours of yarn, standard needles,and bobbins. Bobbins serve to contain the inactiveyarn and help keep it from getting tangled. Unlikethe narrow, wooden ones used to make bobbin lace,modern intarsia bobbins resemble translucent plasticyo-yos that can snap tight to prevent the yarn fromunwinding.After winding a few yards of each colour onto its ownbobbin (and possibly several bobbins' worth of somecolours), the knitter simply begins knitting her/hispattern. When she/he arrives at a point where thecolour changes, the knitter brings the new colour upunderneath the old one (to prevent holes) and startsknitting with it. If flat knitting, at the end of the row,the piece is turned round just as with regular knit-ting, and the knitter returns the way she/he came.The simplest intarsia pattern is for straight verticalstripes. After the first row, the pattern is continuedby always working each stitch in the same colour asthe previous row, changing colours at exactly thesame point in each row. To make more elaborate pat-terns, one can let this colour boundary drift from rowto row, changing colours a few stitches earlier or

Jewellery Design INGOTAn ingot is a material, usually metal, that is castinto a shape suitable for further processing. Non-metallic and semiconductor materials prepared inbulk form may also be referred to as ingots, par-ticularly when cast by mold based methods. In-gots require a second procedure of shaping, suchas cold/hot working, cutting or milling to producea useful final product. Additionally ingots (of lesscommon materials) can be used as currency, or asa currency reserve as with gold bars.

Interior DesignINCANDESCENT LIGHTINGA type of lighting in which an electric current ispassed through a thin filament, heating it to a tem-perature that produces light. The enclosing glassbulb contains either a vacuum or an inert gas toprevent oxidation of the filament. Incandescentbulbs are inexpensive and create good naturallight and color renderings, but use more energyand generate more heat than fluorescent bulbs.

Graphic DesignINK HOLDOUTThe ability of paper to resist penetration of the inkand not absorb it into the fibers of the paper istermed ink holdout.The degree in which a paper is able to hold ink con-sistently on the surface, preventing excessive ab-sorption of the ink. A paper with a high holdoutlevel results in a sharper, more clearly defined dotand produces higher ink gloss. When ink is ab-sorbed into paper, it spreads, creating a phenome-non referred to as dot gain. A coated glossy paperstock has a low ink absorption rate and thereforehas a high holdout, while a high absorption papersuch as newsprint has low holdout.High holdout ability can also create potential prob-lems. Ink can rub off the printed sheet because ofthe low absorption rate of the paper and the inkcan smear onto other printed documents. Overprintvarnishes, aqueous coatings, or UV coatings maybe applied to applications printed on paper with alow absorption rate in order to prevent potentialproblems associated with high holdout.

The charts generally look like highly pixel-lated cartoon drawings, in this sense resemblingdot-matrix computer graphics or needlepoint pat-terns (though usually without the colour nuance ofthe latter).

I started off by clicking pic-tures of my mother but ended up on thechess board in a completely dark roomat 2 a.m in the morning!

years. Sponsored by individual Rotaryclubs, INTERACT has become a worldwidephenomenon where almost 200,000 youngpeople are involved with more than 10,700Interact clubs in 109 countries. It is an en-deavor to bring young people together andmake them believe that “I can” is 100 timesmore important than IQ. It will focus on ac-tivities which will mobilize young minds inmaking new friends, improving theircommunity, developing leadership

skills with thought, actions and initiativesto make a difference in the world. The con-ference will bring together leaders whohave failed over and over in their life andhence have succeeded. These Assemblieswill be chaired by Interact Chair PP Rtn. Ms.Archana Surana (RID 3052) and under theable guidance of District Governor Rtn. AnilAgarwal (RID 3052). Kiran is a founder of Design ForChange (DFC), and the founder-director ofthe Riverside School in Ahmedabad, Gu-jarat, India. This movement has spread toover 35 countries in three years. Kiranstarted this global movement with a convic-tion that if children are empowered andmade to feel that they can take matters intotheir hands, they will change the world forthe better. DFC is the wonderful, amazingconcept for children to comprehend the

real world, to take up the challenge forindividuals, even the society,

and the world. The mission of education is not too ideal to achieve if itis just as government’s policies or the by-product of chaotic, fast refor-mulating society. The initial mission of education is simple and easy,that of helping children find their dreams. A workshop on creating use-ful things from waste materials 'Global Game by Shikshantar' - shall betaken by Ms. Vidhi Jain, Shikshantar, Udaipur. A 'Design Thinking Work-shop' – will be conducted by Prof. Benoy Thoompunkal, Director Aca-demics, Arch Academy of Design at Udaipur. This workshop would helpthe students to develop the requisite attitudes, values, skills & sensitivityrelated to the field of Design and Creative Thinking. The Assembly inJaipur is sponsored by Rotary Club Jaipur Elite whereas for Udaipur,Rotary Club Udaipur Udai is the main sponsoring club. To celebrate the most inspiring stories of theDFC School Challenge 2013, DFC hosted the I CANCelebration and Exhibition on January 18th,2014.More than 80 children from over 30 schoolsand 22 cities all over India participated. “15 years ago Hillary Clinton brought into existence, the ‘Vital Voices’ organiza-tion. And it was my mentor – Geraldine Laybourne , a US media icon, who initiatedthe Mentoring Walk campaign. Together, with the support of Fortune magazine& the US government, the idea of small morning walks of women, turned into aglobal initiative which works for women empowerment today. Geraldine Laybourne has worked alongside Oprah Winfrey for many women-ori-ented programmes across the globe – and this has contributed to the heart of the‘Mentoring Walk’ as well. Inspired by her, I decided to bring this concept to Jaipurand hence back in 2010, I successfully conducted the first such walk.

I have strong belief in entrepreneurship & self reliance and it has alwaysbeen my intention to play a role in shaping the lives of budding profes-sionals(young girls), housewives, and female members of the disadvan-taged craft communities living at the base of the pyramid. At the debriefing session at‘Tapri – the Tea House’, after the walk, the mentors and mentees shared theirideas, experiences, and feelings about what they gained out of the event, andtheir further expectations. Following this, the participants had their networkingsession followed by breakfast. The event proved to be beneficial for the menteesas it was a step to a successful career; opening doors to new networks for collabo-ration, and opportunities. It gave these women mentees exposure and a chance to interactwith professionals and experts in related fields, and in effect provided them with useful in-formation regarding the promotion and marketability of their products and vocational ac-tivities. Participants also gained ample knowledge towards upgradation of their skills, thusaffirming the purpose of the event as well as the usefulness in associating with theevent. With these achieved, the mentees plan to continue their links with thementors for further collaborations.

The students of the Arch Academy of Design at-tended the 2nd day of Wills Lifestyle India Fash-

ion Week Autumn /Winter which began from 26thMarch 2014 in Delhi. It was very inspiring for us tobe there at the Fashion show and see the exhibitionsof the designers at their stalls. To see, up-close, thedetailing on the garments, surfaces and impeccablecuts and tailoring along with the glamour part of theIndustry. Wills Lifestyle started on a very chic note.Pratima Pandey showcased her collection titled“Singing Sparrow” which drew inspiration from

French nightingale, Edith Piaf”s signature song, ‘LaVien Rose’. It had layered asymmetrical garments.She used traditional fabrics like chanderi for mensjackets worn over fitted pants. It was an eco friendly,

varied line collection with a mixture of fabrics likesheer lace, cotton, velvet and of course raw silk. Thedesigner played with a lot of dark colours in all heroutfits. The only accessories used by the designer inher collection were head accessories which was kindof unique. Out of the many bold and dark coloursthere was also a tinge of white with floral embroideryat the hemlines which was beautiful. It was strikingwith shades of red mixed with black and gold. De-signer Vaishali S. rediscovered her previous collec-tion in her presentation. Her inspiration for thecollection is “Bhinna Shadja” a famous raga in Hin-dustani classical music. She presented a very classyand easy to wear Autumn/Winter collection withflowy drapes, Silhouettes layered with white organza,wispy layering, peek –a- boo waists & handkerchiefhems. White was the dominant colour but there wasalso black charcoal grey and mustard yellow on therunway. She said she thought that grey and whiteplayed very well with her concept. She presented hersilhouettes in an illusionary manner because shewanted to break free from the image of conventionalgarments. Apart from Silk and Chiffon, Khadi Sheerfabric was also used in her collection. The “Muoho”collection was showcased by Kiran and Meghna. Itpredicted a fall winter trend which would be more to-wards comfort and full of organic fabrics. Their Col-lection was inspired by the breath taking beautifulaesthetics of Morocco. The designers also teamedtheir collection with headgear, necklaces and ban-gles. They used accentuated motifs mixed with deli-cate drapes. They played with embroidery andhandcrafted fabrics.

Jaipur Art FestivalStretching the Canvas

With the mood swinging vibe of the space, one could feel how lost each artistwas in their work.

Jaipur, the city of culture & art cel-ebrated the IInd art festival atDiggi Palace. It started on 19th

March and continued till 23rd ofMarch. This five days long festival cel-ebrated art. Two hundred and twentyfive accomplished artists from twenty-five countries and twenty-two states inIndia gathered to participate in the fes-tival, showcasing their art pieces whichthey produced at the venue. Differentart schools such as JJ School of Art,Shantiniketan, Baroda School of Art,Delhi School of Art etc also partici-pated. There were live demonstrationsof different art forms such as batik,block printing, enamel art, fresco, wash

techniques, sand sculpture, etc.; whichmade the festival quite interactive.With the mood swinging vibe of thespace, one could feel how lost eachartist was in their work. No matter theobserving visitors, they just continuedworking completely engrossed in theirown world. These artists were so ex-traordinary in their respective styles,and still grounded to the earth. Suchfestivals are so inspiring. It changesone’s views towards life.

“I feel I was Nefertiti that many eons ago.” This wasno trip in narcissism but an honest confession ofone of the many Mentors gathered at the Chr-cha

- a meeting of creative minds of Jaipur city. There wasa businesswoman who admitted to “daily dusting myhouse” as her enduring fetish or a leading dental sur-geon of the city whose life line was pushing her ownenvelop to do “better and better at everything”. Thecomforting cover of being amongst like mindedwomen who had walked their talk had naturally un-shackled the spirit - women who had found work to bemore fun than fun were now ready to share their littlesecrets ,though not about hard core matters but moreimportantly about the “ME”. That honest effort of hav-ing run the race against all odds had been indeed atransforming experience for the well heeled womendrawn from various walks of life.Doctors, lawyers, designers, writers, entrepreneurs, ac-tivists, artists and all other stake holders in develop-ment in general, and that of women in particular- youname it and they were all there!Each one a heroine of her life and not a victim!This is not to say that the Mentors had been born fail-ure –proofed or had never ever been on the hit list ofTime! The reason why each had earned their place atthe table was because they had not allowed thewounded heel to hold them back. Also it was all aboutattitude – once the wound was healed each was futurefocused, and now was ready to hold hands with thementee, or as the term coined for the sisterhood actsays - “Paying it Forward”Each mentor was ready to give back without fear orfavour to help the mentee overcome any roadblock inthe journey; was ideated in the resolve to train, to toilwith a new found vigour, to be spot -on and help themfind their rightful place under the sun. “It is actually

a two way lane” said Archana Surana, Director, ArchAcademy whose brainchild was Chr-cha. With the 1st Mandatory unit of the Edexcel pro-gramme in Art & Design i.e Visual Communication inArt and Design, the assignments were about commu-nicating ideas and concepts by researching visualtechniques and applying the most appropriate meth-ods to interpret our concepts. The scenario given tous was to design a poster for an organization work-ing for wildlife and domestic animal protection likeFIAPO or Help in Suffering. We were supposed tovisit these organizations and interview our clients aspart of our primary research and information collec-tion. We had also to go to the zoo to research andunderstand the different behavioral characteristic ofanimals and to observe the gesture, demographicsand their importance in the maintenance of our eco-logical balance . We also had to research, study anddocument one art movement and one artist of ourchoice to emulate the artistic style to render the finalposter with our own developed aesthetic senses. Atevery step we had to analyze, critically evaluate andjustify our actions. The assignment had a strong vo-cational context. We had the opportunity to presentour work to the clients in response to a brief. And ex-plain “why we have done what we have done” and tohave an alternative idea ready to present as back-up.We also studied related principles and elements ofdesign etc in order to begin exploration with tech-

niques. I did research on various characteristics andgestures and postures of the selected animal, thelion, and drew observational and detailed drawings.After all the basics, I started up with my explorationsin visual techniques through my animal, which in-cluded both the use of different mediums and someself generated techniques. We were encouraged tovisit exhibitions and art fairs in the city. With groupdiscussions and peer assessments, we were also ableto develop our concepts . There were demonstrations

Collage and caricature-The animal Ihad selected for my assignment of cre-ative interpretation was the lion which Itried to represent through exploring dif-ferent visual communication techniques,one of which is collage. Using cut paper,I made an artwork, assembling a carica-ture of the lion.

Polychrome lion-This technique usesmulticolour to best express the moodsand characteristics of the form. Usingvibrant poster colours as the medium,the straight and curved strokes definedthe ferocious character & features ofthe lion. In my exploration of themedium I got to learn to express ideaand emotion.

Centre of effect- This technique is aself generated technique in which I useda centre point around which I madeconcentric circles. I made rays comingout of this centre as the main elementof my technique and I finally made thedrawing of the lion over the base andcolored it in with colour pencils andblack pen. I gave a shifting effect in theentire drawing in order to express 3d in2d.

Movingon with the unit, I further made a research paper ona selected artist, Pablo Picasso and his famous styleof cubism. With the ideations and variations exploredin the poster design assignment I learnt to representmy artwork in cubist style and I implemented thefinal concept poster prototype, using different medi-ums and representation in the selected style. With thecompletion of the whole unit I am now able to under-stand mediums and techniques to explore, discover,develop and represent ideas. The next unit i.e IdeaGeneration and Development in Art and Design is stillunder progress. This unit is about inspiring and mo-

tivating learners in a challenging way to think ‘out ofthe box’ and generate ideas that are innovative. It en-courages risk taking, visual experimentation, andproblem solving. In our case it included the use of lateral thinking, theexploration of scale, mind maps, workshops, the useof non-traditional preparatory materials, group discus-sions, tutorials, peer and tutor feedback and reflectiveannotation in sketchbooks and visual diaries. The 1stassignment in this unit which includes observation offorms, and understanding the shape and expression ofobjects in different spaces is completed. I had selectedthe brush as a tool, with which I made the basic draw-ings and some explorations focusing on association.

P PRACTISE, DOCUMENTATION, HARDWORK,OVERTIME …Yes, this is what an open sessionteaches a student and this time it’s us…The Foun-

dation batch “Open House day- cum- Jury” which washeld on 29th March on 2 Edexcel Units - Visual Commu-nication in Art and Design as well as Idea Generation. Stu-dents were excited and a bit nervous too to present theirwork in front of jury members for the first time. The assignment i.e. Poster design encouraged the stu-dents to implement their ideas and think on a very crucialemerging topic of saving animals from cruelty. Ms.Timmy Kumar (an artist and interior designer), Ms. Gee-tanjali Kasliwal (Architect), Artist Mr. Bhawani ShankarSharma , and Mr. Ravish Gautam who were invited as jurymembers were amazed by the quality of work done bystudents. There was lots of talk about saving wildlife, do-mestic animals as well as creating a balance betweenthem, to sustain the environment. Ms. Timmy Kumaradded more knowledge to our research on various artists,their techniques and applying them in our poster. Sheeven expected us to create awareness about the scenarioin our real life.The Poster SHOOT THE DISAPPEARANCE- gave us a pro-

voking thought of saving tigers. The next Edexcel Unitmodule, given to us was Idea Generation. It was all aboutexpressing and implementing our ideas, and ourthoughts in different possible ways. We select any objector element of nature and use their FORM WITHIN SPACEor represent their SPACE WITHIN FORM. Students usedpaint brush, cup, ring bell, card reader etc. as their objectand represented their expressions, their views throughthe object. The whole work left us with an experience offacing the outside world and we got confidence to present

our work, and the subject in detailed depth. We gotmeaningful feedback from our faculty Ms. Aparna Yadavand Mr. Indrajit Das. They supported us from the very be-ginning in the work we were doing. We were also highlyinspired by the words of our Director Ms. Archana Suranawho guided us with the basic skills we should possess topresent our work. Thank you all for mentoring us and being there to guideus in the right direction.

Poster design encouraged the students to implement their ideasand think on a very crucial emerging topic of saving animalsfrom cruelty.

Ayush Kasliwal is a furniture designer and is fortu-nate to get the prestigious ELLE Decor InternationalDesign Award (EDIDA), India 2013. We were eagerto know the story behind his success. Here are somequestions which we asked him.

Q. What was your inspiration to become a designer?I was brought up in Ghana, West Africa where I didnot have many toys or games to play with. The easi-est things at hand were Mud, and boxes of cassettes.This made me creative, and I invented games to keepmyself occupied. This was the start of my `making’things. This led to my becoming a designer as I un-derstood how things are made.Q. How were your days at the NID?Oh! It was great as I was the only student in furnitureand interior design. I got more attention from theteachers; hence I could explore more in my field as

well as in other fields.Q. How did you start your company AnanTaya Decor?After passing out from NID I straight away started myown firm in my home city, Jaipur. In the course ofworking, I came across many skilled artisans, andstarted to use crafts in the projects that I was workingon,. After a certain point, it made sense to start ashowroom to retail my products, and that was the be-ginning of AnanTaya.Q. Was it difficult to set up your own firm?I’ve never faced any problems in establishing my firmbecause I never took challenges as obstacles. Eachdifficulty was an experience for me to learn from andgrow.

Q. Where do your products find its identity?My products don’t stand as a piece in space. It re-volves around the space. The products have a reasonfor existence. However, being Indian is a very strongpart of all my work. Q. How do you socially contribute as a designer?Crafts are a highly sustainable way of production.Which also employ millions of crafts people. Thisextremely skilled community is unfortunately notflourishing due to the paucity of design, andmarketing opportunities. Here is where Anan-Taya comes in, to design products thatcraftspeople can make, and understand ,and clients enjoy to use.

Q. What is your recent award all

about?I have received an ELLE Decor International DesignAward (EDIDA), India 2013; This was in recognitionof the work we have been doing, in combining craftsand design.Q. While working, what motto do you keep in mind?To me , it is essential that each product has a reasonto be- it might be from the use, the material, theprocess, or even the story for the same. Q. Being established in Jaipur, how do you see Jaipurin the long run?Jaipur has lots of potential. There is lot to explore. Itis the upcoming ‘Design capital of India’. Many cre-ative people are calling it home.Q. What message would you like to convey to the up-coming designers?I want to say, be open, be flexible to the things you
