Welcome Back!Fall is always a very exciting time on college campuses across the country. See new faces, catch up with old friends, share summer adventures, and be seen at the Rec. Recreation and Sports Services is dedicated to providing diverse learning opportunities while instilling a lifelong commitment to wellness. In addition to our new Recreation and Sports Services newsletter, here are a few other things we have been up to while you were away:

The University of West Florida’s Health, Leisure and Sports Facility has been declared a Red Cross Emergency Shelter. It will be the first shelter opened in many emergency situations. In the event that circumstances warrant it, the HLS Facility will be closed to the public and will be under the control of the Red Cross until the event has passed. Should this occur, HLS Facility patrons will be notified through Argus, WUWF 88.1, Recreation’s website (uwf.edu/recreation), and signs posted at the entrances and throughout the facility.

The University is very pleased that we are able to offer this service to our community in times of need. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your support and patronage.

Under ConstructionThe Aquatic Center will operate better than ever when it reopens in late fall. Some new features include:

-A dehumidification system

-An additional diving board, bringing the total to 2-1M spring boards and 1-3M springboard

-A new filtration system

-New, larger lockers

-Noise abatement treatments

Biathlon: UWF’s Biathlon is open to UWF students, staff and faculty as well as the local community. The event is designed for the novice biathlete and occurs during the fall se-mester. The Challenge consists of a 5K run and a third of a mile swim. Prizes are awarded.

Swim Around Aruba: Challenge yourself to “Swim Around Aruba,” or at least to swim the number of miles that it would take you to swim around Aruba. After the completion of this semester long program, you’ll have bragging rights and a t-shirt!

MEN’S RUGBY

Why should people join the Rugby Club?

It’s a great way to make lifelong friends. The guys that play rugby create a fraternity, or brotherhood, of their own. This brotherhood extends to rugby players on the teams we play against also.

The Rugby Club also gives back to the community. We support Big Brothers/Big Sisters and teach children how to play the game.

How did you get involved with the Rugby Club?

I took an Intro to Philosophy class with a guy on the team. He mentioned I should give it a try. I came out to a practice, tried it, liked it and have been playing ever since.

Who do you play against?

The UWF Rugby Club competes in the Deep South USA Rugby Conference. The club travels to compete with schools across the Southern plain, including the University of Southern Mississippi, Ole Miss, Tulane, University of Louisiana-Lafayette and FSU.

What does your season look like?

The Fall Semester is Pre-Season. There are four to five single games and usually two tournaments. The Regular Season takes place during the Spring Semester with six games, then playoffs.

Level 1: For those who are new to Group Fitness programs and/or exercise programs.

Level 2: For those who are familiar with Group Fitness programs and have some experience with exercise programs.

Level 3: For those who are active in Group Fitness programs and are currently involved in an exercise program.

Class DescriptionsGentle Yoga (Levels 1-3): Explore gentle movements to increase flexibility, strength and well being.Beginner Yoga (Level 1): Connect with your body, mind and spirit in this FITNESS BASED yoga class. This class is a combination of breathing, strength, flexibility, balance and relaxation techniques. Intermediate Yoga (Level 2): Connect with your body, mind and spirit in this FITNESS BASED yoga class. This class builds upon the fundamentals of Beginner Yoga to increase strength, balance and flex-ibility in a relaxing setting. Advanced Yoga (Level 2-3): Increase your yoga practice by pushing your strength and flexibility as you develop your form and learn new poses. Power Yoga (Level 2-3): A high-paced yoga practice that combines the balance, strength and flexibility of yoga with the cardiovascular benefit of constant, flowing movement. Benefits include strengthening and loosening of the muscles, balance and mental relief. Pilates (Levels 1-3): The focus of this class is to strengthen the body’s core muscles. Pilates improves flexibility, coordination, muscle control and strength through physical and mental conditioning. T-N-T (Trim-N-Tone) (Levels 1-3): An EXTREME workout consisting of upper body sculpting with free weights, mixed with intense cardio and body sculpting components. Butts and Guts (Levels 1-3): Feel the burn with this class designed to target the abdominals and glutes. Increase your abdominal strength while tightening up your back-side. Step (Levels 1-3): High intensity cardio workout that will target your hips, glutes and thighs! Get ready to work! Turbo Kick (Levels 1-3): is a combination of intense kickboxing moves, as well as dance moves, all cho-reographed to high energy and motivating music. Cycle (Levels 1-3): Get ready to sweat in this journey through hills, sprints, jumps, etc.! All levels are encouraged to attend for an intense cardiovascular and strengthening workout. Spinnerval (Levels 2-3): A high intensity cycle class paired with weight intervals for an awesome total body workout. Rock-Hard Abs (Levels 1-3): This class offers innovative exercises designed to strengthen the abdomi-nal, oblique and lower back muscles. It is an ideal addition to another class, or can be taken alone. Hard Core (Level 1-3): A 30 minute gut-grinding session that will help strengthen your abdominals, obliques, lower back and improve your posture!Muscle Confusion (Levels 2-3): Confuse your muscles with something new each class! Improve your muscular strength/endurance, aerobic capacity and flexibility in this intense workout!Bosu Blast (Levels 1-3): Explore new ways to exercise using the bosu ball, along with other equipment to build muscles and stay fit.Cardio Sculpt (Levels 1-3): Consists of total body sculpting for a whole body experience. This class helps participants develop muscular strength and endurance using a variety of equipment including weights, body bars, stability balls and more! Xtreme Cycle (Level 1-3): A combination of cycling and toning exercises that not only strengthen the muscles of the legs, as well as other parts of the body by using medicine balls, resistance bands, bosu balls, and free weights.Tai Chi (Level 1-3): a series of movements and postures developed under the traditions of Taoism as a means of self-defense, moving meditation, as well as a way to invigorate one’s own vitality.Yoga Fitness (Level 1-3): Take this class and you will build strength, and increase flexibility, and in-crease your overall well being.

The program will introduce, demonstrate and train women on a variety of exercises designed to enhance overall strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. Cost is $125.

Argo Weight Club Monday, August 30 – Wednesday, November �4The Argo Weight Club can help motivate you to increase your strength. You may try out for the Argo Weight Club at any time throughout the semester. All you have to do is inform an on-duty Fitness Monitor that you would like to try out for the Argo Weight Club. It’s that easy!

Ultimate Fitness Challenge Tuesday, August 31 – Saturday, November �0This free incentive program is designed to test aerobic capacity, muscular strength, endurance and internal drive! Compete to complete all 300 reps in the fastest time possible. Top 3 times receive prizes!

FREQUENTLY ASKED P.T. QUESTIONS

Which strength training routines are good for beginners?Any strength training routine should include at least 8-10 exercises that train all the major muscle groups of the body. The ACSM recommends that strength training be done on at least �-3 nonconsecutive days. Initially, one set of 8-1� repetitions should be performed to the point of volitional fatigue.

Will strength training make you “bulky” if you are a female?This is one of the biggestmisconceptions of weight training for females. The muscular gains that males make are due to hormonal responses that cause such drastic changes in muscle mass. Although females can and will gain muscle, the changes are not as apparent as seen in males. Weight training is must in any training program! Engaging in a consistent weight training program will assist with burning more calories, improving bone mineral density, and will help the body work efficiently.
