Recurring Pictograms, the rst photo journal of Jonas Svedin

It is a life extra ordinary. Like any life Extra and Ordinary and like in

any life, recurring images. Repetitions no less extraordinary.

Jonas has captured his own life and some of those around him

quickly, in step and motion. Technical brilliance is not the issue

here, at least what there is of it is well hidden.

No, there is a journey here, or maybe more of a trip.

It is very tting that this journal starts with a window because

windows come back throughout it. You look into one and suddenly

nd yourself in the next landscape, borne there by the recurring

images of wings.

Different wings at different points in time but still wings. Some of

the wings tted onto feet of someone in another time and place.

These feet with wings are bare. They are in a place where there is no

need for the warmth of shoes. This will change with time. As will

the vessel onto which the wings are tted. As will the sky through

which the ights are taken.

In between ights you will nd repetitions. Repetitions that come

together, that are related, in spite of their differences in time and

space.

Man made shapes back to back with shapes of nature but very

obviously related. Trees, roads, skies, windows. Windows both onto

the outside, onto the next place, as well as onto the self.

Representations of those parts of l ife that are ordinary. That we all

live through. But also representations that can only be caught once

and that pose questions because they are pictograms from a different

time as uninterpretable as the ancient pictograms found on rock

walls. We can guess at their meaning we cannot know for sure.

Why is that man on re? Why did you get into that ght?

Where does this hole in the ground really lead? Who wrote this?

Pictograms within the pictograms. Painted walls everywhere.

Darkness envelopes the last part of this journal. It is not however

a darkness of the mind but rather the darkness of geography and

time of day. The bare feet have been clad in more robust shoes. The

wings have long ago been tted onto a jet or onto a car. A different

life with different shades. Again captured in journal with no wish

to distinguish or rearrange the light and the dark, the night and the

day.

There is a life here. Like any life a variable but again recurring one.

A limited timespan and a specic human beings language conveyed

in images. Images like humans, animals, celestial bodies, shapes and

patterns. The very denition of the pictogram.

So where does it lead? It leads to wherever the road in the end takes

us. Human shape crossing the landscape. Into the next pictogram.
