A message fromthe Leader

Councillor Matthew Dormer, Leaderof Redditch Borough Council

This Summer edition ofRedditch matters bringstogether all the activities andevents which are being heldacross our Borough.

Lots of these are being held in our parks and Iwas delighted to the spotlight thrown on theseas part of Love Your Parks week.We are very lucky in Redditch to have suchwonderful, green open spaces which canbe enjoyed by dog-walkers, families, fitnessfanatics and those who want to relax. This magazine is also a chance to look at whatwe have done as a Council and what we arelooking forward to. Having just taken over asLeader in the last couple of months, there areexciting times ahead for Redditch as we unlockthe potential of our magnificent borough.

Don’t be a bonfire-starterBe cool not cruel to pets this Summer

Worcestershire Regulatory Services delivers services including Environmental Health and Licensing services throughout the county, hosted by Bromsgrove District Council.

Worcestershire’s Dog warden is insisting that dog-owners are ‘coolnot cruel’ to their pets during the hot weather.Pip Singleton, who works for Worcestershire Regulatory Services, fears that like every year, people will still leave their dogs in carswhich can lead to a horrific and painful death. She said: “It’s like putting your dog in an oven and turning thetemperature up – the suffering is horrendous for them yet despite allthe messages being put out social media, we are still getting callsabout it!.”Other top tips for animal care in the hot weather includes:• Make sure there is shade for your pets if you leave them outside• Keep topping up their water and make sure it is easily accessible• Don’t over-fuss and pet them as they are may be too hot to handle• Encourage dogs to walk on the grass, not hot tarmac. Their paws

aren’t heatproof!Pip added: “Pets have no voice so owners need to be responsible. If you are hot – then odds on they are too. And you wouldn’t sit ina car in these temperatures, even with the windows open, for morethan ten minutes – so why should they? Be cool not cruel and have ahappy dog – not a hot dog.”

As the summer holidays continue residents are being urged to stay safewhen it comes to making a sizzle on the barbecue.Worcestershire Regulatory Services Food Safety experts have some toptips for budding chefs to ensure a Summer Sizzle doesn’t turn into aturbulent tum!Cases of food poisoning almost double during the summer, and researchshows that the undercooking of raw meat and the contamination ofbacteria onto the food we eat are among the main reasons. So here’s how you can confidently tuck into bangers and burgers:-

Top tips from the Food Standards Agency [FSA] include:• Pre-cook the meat or poultry in the oven first and then finish it off on the barbecue for flavour.• Charred doesn’t mean cooked make sure that burgers, sausages, chicken and all meats are

properly cooked by cutting into the meat and checking that it is steaming hot all the way through, thatnone of it is pink and that any juices run clear.

• Disposable barbecues take longer always check that your meat is cooked right through.• Avoid cross-contamination by storing raw meat separately before cooking, use different utensils,

plates and chopping boards for raw and cooked food.• Don’t wash raw chicken or other meat, it just splashes germs.

Find out more about the FSA’s top tips at: food.gov.uk/lovebbq

Have a safe summer sizzle

Green fingered residents are being urged not to be a nuisance when getting rid of their garden waste. With the nicer weather it is sometimes tempting to have a bonfire to get rid of garden waste or rubbishbut residents should always keep their neighbours in mind so as not to cause a nuisance.Smoke, smell and ash can travel a considerable distance and it is not always immediate neighbourswho are affected. Smoke can prevent people from opening windows, enjoying their gardens, hangingout washing and can have damaging health effects, especially on those with existing health problemssuch as asthma or bronchitis. Here are some top tips to bear in mind if you choose to burn your rubbish:• Inform your neighbours before you light a bonfire• Try not to burn at weekends or bank holidays• Only burn waste that comes from your garden• Burn dry material only• Do not use flammable liquids to start a bonfire• Check weather conditions, damp still days can cause smoke to stay in the area. If it is too windy,

smoke will blow into surrounding gardens and houses and across roads and can cause a hazardfor drivers.

• Do not burn household rubbish and items containing plastic, foam, paint, rubber, or bottles andcans as they may explode when burnt and the fumes can be noxious.

• Never leave a bonfire smouldering or unattended. Fire can spread to fences or buildings andscorch trees and plants

• Always check for hibernating wildlife and sleeping pets, as piles of garden waste are often usedas a refuge by animals
