.The Spanish word for ball depends on the sport being played at the time, although the main Spanish word for
ball is pelota .
PARTICIPLES in SPANISHAs you may have already learned in the lesson on the present tense, you usually say something like "I am speaking" in Spanish in the same way as you say "I speak": hablo. Similarly, you can say "he is eating" in the same way as you say "he eats": come.
However, Spanish does have a way of specifically saying verbs such as "eating" and "speaking," although they are used less often than in English.
The verb forms that are the equivalent of the "-ing" form in English are known as present participles or gerunds.
The important thing to keep in mind, however, is that while the Spanish present participle is roughly the equivalent of the "-ing" form in English, there are significant differences in the way it is used.
The Spanish present participle of regular verbs is formed by
removing the -ar ending and replacing it with -ando, or by removing the -er or -ir ending and replacing it with -iendo. Here are examples of each of the verb types:
hablar (to speak) — hablando (speaking)
beber (to drink) — bebiendo (drinking)
vivir (to live) — viviendo (living)
The verbs that have irregular present participles still use the same -ando and -iendo endings, but they have changes in the stems.
For example, the present participle of venir (to come) is viniendo (coming), and the present participle of decir (to say) is diciendo (saying).
To prevent awkward spellings, a few verbs use a -yendo ending in the participle instead of -iendo.
For example, the present participle of leer (to read) is leyendo (reading).
As a beginning Spanish student, the way you are most likely to use the present participle is with the
verb estar (to be) to form what is known as the present progressive tense.ESTAR + the Preasent Participle
Here are some examples of that usage:
Estoy estudiando. (I am studying.)NOW!
Está lavando la ropa. (He is washing the clothing now!)
Estamos comiendo el desayuno. (We are eating breakfast now!)
The present participle can also be used with other tenses of estar to indicate past and future action.
Here is the present-tense indicative conjugation of estar combined with a sample present participle to form the present progressive tense:
yo — Estoy escribiendo. — I am writing.
tú — Estás escribiendo. — You are writing.
él, ella, usted — Está escribiendo. — He/she/you is/is/are writing.
nosotros, nosotras — Estamos escribiendo. — We are writing.
Vosotros, vosotras — Estáis escribiendo. — You all are writing.
ellos, ellas, ustedes — Están escribiendo. — They/all of ..you are writing.
The same can be done with other tenses and moods. Although it isn't necessary to learn these yet if you're a beginner, here are some examples to demonstrate the concept:
Estaré escribiendo. — I will be writing.
Espero que esté escribiendo. — I hope you're writing.
Estaba escribiendo. —
I/you/he/she was/were writing.
The progressive tenses are used less in Spanish than they are in English. As a general rule, they place an emphasis on the continuing nature of the action.
For example, the difference between "leo" and "estoy leyendo" is roughly the difference between "I
am reading" and "I am in
the process of reading."
("Leo" can also mean simply "I read," indicating a habitual action.)
One of the major differences between the present participles in English and Spanish is that while the English present participle can frequently be used as an adjective or a noun, in Spanish the present participle is nearly always used in
conjunction with other verbs. Here are some examples of the present participle in use:
Estoy pensando en ti. (I am thinking about you.)

There is one reflexive verb you have been using since you began studying Spanish.

Note: A more "natural" translation would be "What is your name?" and "My name is Juan."

To learn to conjugate reflexive verbs, you need to learn a different set of pronouns called "reflexive pronouns." These pronouns are positioned before the
verb, while the ending "se" is dropped and the verb is conjugated normally.

The reflexive pronouns are not subject pronouns; rather they are object pronouns.(they act as object pronouns)

The purpose of the reflexive object pronouns is to show that the action of the verb remains with the subject.

Note: When referring to body parts, use the definite article, thus "la cara" not "su cara."
Note that many, many verbs can be made reflexive. All it means when a verb is reflexive is that the action remains with the subject.

Su padre no quiere decir nada. El padre le dice a su hijo Roberto que debe hablar con su abuela, Nela. El padre insiste que Marianela (Nela) sabe mas que él. No sabemos la razón.

Roberto, Linda y Daniela van a la casa de Nela, la abuela de Roberto. En la casa de Nela, Linda ve que no hay una foto del abuelo de Roberto.
Roberto quiere ver una foto de su abuelo.
La abuela va a la alcoba (el dormitorio) para sacar una foto del armario.
Ella le da la foto a Roberto.
El cuadro (la foto) cae sobre el suelo.
Roberto ve un papel en la foto. En el papel hay dos nombres escritos.
El nombre de Chato Montesinos y el nombre de Federico Zuñiga.
Roberto ve que su apellido es Zuñiga, no
Es Toledo. La abuela tiene que explicar.
El cuento- en 1941 Federico le da a su esposa
mucho dinero y sale para Los Estados Unidos porque él quiere ganar dinero para apoyar a su bebé. Después, Federico desaparece.

Julio invita a Linda a comer en el resurante en su hotel.
Luego, Roberto llega y los tres pasean por Guanajuato. Van al Callejón del Beso.
Al día siguiente Roberto empieza a seguir las pistas que tiene para encontrar a su sbuelo.

Roberto empieza a comprender un poquito del cuento de su abuelo. Roberto y Linda van a Dolores Hidalgo para visitar a Chato Montesinos. Chato les explica a ellos que él y Federico salieron de México para ir a los
Estados Unidos para ganar mas dinero. Antes de salir, los dos visita a Marianela. Federico le da a Nela todo el dinero que tiene. Él hace una
promesa. Le dice a Nela que va a volver a México tan pronto como sea posible. Federico quiere ganar dinero en los Estados Unidos
para apoyar a su bebé.
Chato continua…..
Después de salir de su pueblo en México,
Se juntaron con el ejército de Emiliano Zapata.
Entonces, fueron a los Estados Unidos en
San Antonio, Tejas. Entraron en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Después de la guerra Federico volvió a Tejas. Federico abrió un cuento en un banco en Tejas Y desapareció.
Chato no sabe lo que pasó con Federico.

Roberto y Linda visita a Chato Montesinos en Dolores Hidalgo.
Roberto le pregunta a Chato acerca de Federico Zuñiga. Chato les mostró una foto
a Roberto y a Linda. Al día siguiente Roberto
habló con una persona en el banco en San Antonio, Tejas. Roberto quería información
de los cuentos de Federico Zuñiga. El hombre del banco no quiso ayudar al joven porque no tenía el nombre-El APELLIDO de Zuñiga.

The Imperfect ProgressiveIf we want to refer to an action that was happening (at some point in the past), we use the imperfect progressive. As the name would imply, this time we'll use the imperfect tense conjugation of estar with a present participle:

USES OF the imperfect PROGRESSIVE
In Spanish as in English, past progressive is used to describe an action that was happening, going on, at some point in the past.

HOW PAST PROGRESSIVE IS FORMED:
The past progressive tense is formed by combining the verb ESTAR in the imperfect tense with the present participle* of the main verb.
*Present participle is like the -ing form of an English verb
To form the present participle of -AR verbs, drop the infinitive ending and add -ando:cantar → cantando bailar → bailando
To form the present participle of -ER and -IR verbs, drop the infinitive ending and add -iendo:beber → bebiendo comer → comiendo

PAST PROGRESSIVE WITH PRONOUNS
When using direct, indirect object pronouns or reflexive pronouns you have two choices for its placement.
1. Before the verb ESTAR: Nosotros lo estábamos buscando. Me estaba bañando.
2. Attach to the present participle* Nosotros estábamos buscándolo. Estaba bañándome.
*When attaching the pronoun to the present participle, add and accent mark to the -a or -e before -ndo
Nosotros estábamos practicando futbol.We were practicing soccer.
Ella le estaba mintiendo a la maestra.She was lying to the teacher.
Imperfect Progressive AND Preterite
Yo estaba esquiando cuando me caí y me torcí la rodilla.
Spanish Past Progressive ~ Preterite ProgressiveThe Spanish preterite progressive is very similar to the imperfect progressive. Both the preterite progressive and imperfect progressive indicate an action that was in progress in the past when it was interrupted by another event. However, the use of the preterite progressive stresses the fact that the action was completed at the time of the interruption.
Estuve estudiando hasta que llamaste.
I was studying until you called.
Lo vi cuando estuvimos caminando.
I saw him when we were walking (and then we stopped walking).
¿Estuviste leyendo ahora mismo?
Were you reading just now?
Él estuvo trabajando hasta las siete.
He was working until seven o'clock.
The preterite progressive is similar in usage to the preterite, but with an emphasis on the fact that the action was completed at the moment it was interrupted. The preterite progressive is rarely used in everyday Spanish.
The Spanish preterite progressive is formed with the preterite of estar + gerund of the action verb.
