About our team

Our Medical Director

Donald Clemons, M.D.

Dr. Donald Clemons is one of the most experienced

dermatologists in the Tri-Cities area and one of the first

to go beyond traditional dermatology protocols. As a

dermatologist with an aesthetic vision, Dr. Clemons

focuses on treating the skin while taking into account the

patient’s desire for a satisfying and beautiful outcome. His

experience, coupled with his commitment to optimizing

skin health have made his practice a destination for patients

desiring medically-based, results-oriented skin and body

treatments. In fact, patients travel from six different states

to take advantage of his services. As a long-time resident

and trusted physician, he has treated three generations of

families in the Tri-Cities area.

Credentials

Dr. Clemons is a member of the American

Academy of Dermatology, American Society

of Dermatopathology, American Society of

Dermatologic Surgery and American Society of

Laser Medicine and Surgery. He is a past President

of both the East Tennessee Dermatologic Society

and the Tennessee Dermatologic Society.

Education and Experience

He graduated from Louisiana State University in

Baton Rouge in 1967 and from Louisiana State University

School of Medicine in New Orleans on a full military

scholarship in 1971 while on active duty in the Army. He

finished his residence in Dermatology at Fitzsimons Army

Medical center in Denver, Colorado in 1977, spent three

years in Landstuhl Germany as chief of Dermatology

for the regional army hospital and then completed a

dermatopathology residency at the Armed Forces Institute

of Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1981.

He was assigned to the teaching staff in the department at

Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio Texas where

he retired from the army in 1987 as a full Colonel. He

settled in Johnson City in the spring of 1987 and began his

private dermatology practice. He continues to lecture and

teach to resident physicians, medical students, physicians

in practice, as well as the general community.

Kathy Beard Adkins Renovus is proud to have on our management team Kathy Beard Adkins, the first clinical aesthetician in the Tri-Cities

area. Ms. Adkins has worked with Dr. Clemons for 20 years and has completed advanced training in electrolysis, medical

microdermabrasion, chemical peels (including TCA and Jessner’s), and laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation and

laser surgery. She has also been trained on our medical and spa skincare lines. Her experience and education make her a

valuable asset to both Renovus and to her many satisfied clients.

Ms. Adkins is a certified medical practice manager and has completed a course for Dermatology Administrators and

Managers at the University of Texas at Arlington. She is also a licensed aesthetician and a member of the Skin Care Society

and the DNA Dermatology Nursing Association.

& Lift mask is applied. As it dries, you will feel a pleasant

tightening sensation as enzymes, proteins and plant

collagens penetrate deep into the skin. After the mask is

removed a potent recovery serum with botanical extracts

is massaged in until fully absorbed. An application of a

soothing moisturizer finishes the treatment to leave your

Physician Strength Chemical Peels $75 and up

Our medical-grade chemical peels range from mild

alpha hydroxy acids to stronger TCA peels. Treatments

are customized to your specific skin type and condition.

You will experience improvement in the appearance of fine

lines, brown spots and acne. During our treatment you may

feel some slight tingling, warmth or a tight sensation. This

will subside once the chemical is removed or neutralized.

after one treatment, but the most dramatic improvement

is seen with a series of peels. Types of chemical peels:

Glycolic, Salicylic, TCA, Vitamin A, and Jessner’s

Dermaplaning $75

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment using a

smooth surgical blade called a dermatome to remove dead

skin and fine facial hair. The dermatome is held against taut

skin at a 45-degree angle and stroked in manner similar

to shaving. This exfoliating procedure can also reduce

acne scars, soften surface irregularities, minimize fine

lines and wrinkles, tighten pores and help break up skin

discoloration. If you have fine facial fuzz, dermaplaning

may be a good alternative to waxing or tweezing. Your

skin will have a smoother, brighter appearance after only

30 minutes. Dermaplaning is recommended every 3 to 4

weeks to coincide with the skin’s own natural renewal cycle.

Renovus Premier Facial $85

This customized premier facial treatment includes skin

analysis, cleansing, steaming, exfoliation or peel, gentle

extraction and the appropriate treatment mask. Relaxing

essential oils are used to oxygenate, detoxify and hydrate

Photo Dynamic Therapy

A turning point for acne control

PDT or photodynamic therapy is a topical treatment for various skin conditions that has been in use for many years.

It involves applying a clear liquid that combines with cells on the surface of the skin and converts to a chemical already

present in small amounts in your blood stream called PHOTOPORPHRYN IX. These chemicals rapidly enter abnormal skin

cells and overactive oil glands of the skin. The higher concentrations now present on the skin make the area temporarily

very sensitive to sunlight radiation and can create a sunburn type reaction. People that have an abnormal amount in their

bodies because of a genetic defect are unable to be in the sunlight for more than a few minutes without receiving severe

sunburn reactions. In your case, however, this chemical wears off the skin that it was applied to in 24 to 36 hours. During

this time must stay out of direct sunlight to try to prevent this localized sunburn reaction.

How is the treatment performed?

In our office the skin is first cleansed and the clear liquid is rubbed into the area to be treated. It is then allowed to

absorb into the skin for 1 to 2 hours while you wait in the office. A laser light source is used to activate the chemical on the

skin and within the overactive oil gland. An LED light source is then shined on your skin for 16 min 40 sec (1000 seconds)

to further activate the chemical. If you have severe sun damage a laser light source may also be applied to the skin to treat

deeper precancerous changes. The chemical is then washed off the skin, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is applied to the

treated area, and you are allowed to return home. The entire procedure usually lasts less than two hours.

What can I expect?

For patients with acne and Rosacea, the skin will become less oily and the inflammatory pimples and cysts will dry up.

Blackheads will be removed and the pores will tighten. The red color and dilated blood vessels will revert to a more normal

appearance. For sun damage patients the skin will become smoother, the red and brown discolored areas will improve

and the skin will noticeably tighten. Fine wrinkles will also improve and often vanish. You will have a younger fresher

appearance to your skin.

Medical Microdermabrasion

Vascular Conditions Treated by Vbeam®Broken Capillaries

Telengectasias (facial and nasal “spider veins”) are

typically a result of sun exposure. These tiny broken veins

in the face cause a persistent flushed looked and have the

visual effect of “aging” the face. They are worsened by

heat, alcohol, tobacco and sun. Skin that is prone to broken

vessels need be treated gently and cared for with mild

products. Sunscreens and hats will offer protection that will

help maintain your cleared skin during and after treatment.

Red Acne Scars

The “red” left behind in acne scars is a result of tiny

broken capillaries at the site of the healed acne lesion. This

redness is more common to “newer” acne scars and is hard

to conceal, making the evidence of acne more pronounced,

even after it has healed. Lasers which target these broken

capillaries cause the small vessels to coagulate and be

reabsorbed by the body. This effectively removes the

redness.

Vbeam® (Pulsed Dye Laser) is commonly used for the

treatment of red acne scars, stretch marks and keloids,

What’s keeping you from looking your best? Spider veins? Stretch marks? Scars? Red birthmarks? All these conditions

are treatable with the state-of-the-art Vbeam® laser. Vbeam®, one of the family of pulsed dye lasers, is fast and virtually

painless. It can eliminate spider veins, telengectasias, red birthmarks, red acne scars, and even serious port wine stains.

Pulsed Dye Lasers have a well-documented history of safely and effectively treating vascular lesions for over 15 years.

They are designed to deliver an intense but gentle burst of laser light to the skin. This laser light is specifically absorbed

by the blood vessels of the vascular lesion (a broken vessel or capillary). These vessels are gently heated and coagulated.

The body absorbs the treated blood vessels during the natural healing process. The laser has a unique ability to selectively

target the blood vessels of a vascular lesion without adversely affecting the surrounding tissue. It is so safe and effective

that it has been used successfully for the treatment of infants as young as a few weeks old. Vbeam® protects the skin is

during laser treatment by a dynamic cooling device which sprays a cool liquid onto the skin before each laser pulse, cooling

the upper layers of the skin and providing patients with increased comfort

which are thickened scar tissue. The Vbeam® laser usually

requires three to five treatments. Because the Vbeam®

uses a cooling and deep heating process to target is the

broken vessel, the treatment is well tolerated and protects

the outer surface of the skin.

Leg Spider Veins

Age, pregnancy, and heredity play a large part in the

development of varicose and small spider veins. Varicose

veins are better treated by sclerotherapy while small red

and purple spider veins are easily and comfortably treated

by vascular lasers like Vbeam®.

The American Academy of Dermatology believes

that the new laser technology for treating spider veins is

more effective with fewer side effects than sclerotherapy

or electrodessication for the same size vessels. Laser

surgery is more comfortable for patients because there are

no needles or incisions. When the laser hits the skin, the

patient only feels a small pinch, and the skin is soothed by

cooling both before and after the laser is applied.

Rosacea

Rosacea (pronounced “roh-ZAY-sha”) is a chronic and

potentially life-disrupting disorder primarily of the facial

skin, often characterized by flare-ups and remissions. Many

have observed that it typically begins any time after age 30

as redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may

come and go. In some cases, Rosacea may also occur on the

neck, chest, scalp or ears. Over time, the redness becomes

ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may

appear. Left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop,

and in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy

from excess tissue.

While there is no cure for Rosacea and the cause is

unknown, medical therapy is available to control or reverse

its signs and symptoms. Vascular lasers such as Vbeam®

have proved to substantially reduce and often eliminate the

redness and flushing of Rosacea that is so problematic.

Port Wine Stains

Port wine stains are present at birth. Pulsed-dye lasers

offer safe and effective treatment for port wine stains.

Treatment success depends on the age at which it is begun

and the location of the lesion. With multiple treatments,

most port wine stains can be significantly lightened.

Because port wine stains can be progressive, treatment

should be done early to prevent cobbling of the skin and

thickening and darkening of the stain.

Laser Skin TighteningThe goal of many facial treatments and procedures is to aggressively address fine lines, wrinkles and sagging

contours. Some procedures are invasive and require down time but Renovus has an alternative. Our medically-directed

Skin Tightening program uses a Candela® GentleYAG® laser that produces significant results with no downtime. Through

a series of treatments, the GentleYAG® laser stimulates the production of collagen in the dermis and increases healthy

cell turnover rate which helps to regenerate and replace damaged cells. The new collagen results in skin tightening, and an

overall more youthful-looking complexion with fewer lines, wrinkles and sagginess. Upper arms, thighs and the abdomen

First line of defence to fight agingThe #1 anti-aging secret? Protect yourself from the sun. It’s that simple.

A tan was not fashionable until the 1920’s when Coco Chanel came back from the French Riviera sporting a golden

glow. Since then a whole industry has sprouted to feed the desire for those going for the gold. Keep in mind that a tan is the

body’s first line of defense against the harmful effects of the sun. A tan is your signal that damage has occurred.

Two types of ultraviolet rays (UV) from the sun exist: UVA and UVB. UVB, also known as “the burning ray”, causes

burning of the skin or the red associated with sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging of skin. UVA, known as “the aging

ray”, causes premature aging and is also linked to other problems such as impaired vision, skin rashes, melanoma, and

allergic reactions to certain medications. Physicians agree that the most serious and lasting damage occurs before age 18

and continues to present itself during your lifetime. Some damage is quickly obvious: redness, irritation, flaking skin and

fine lines from dehydration. Other signs may not show up for years such as deep wrinkles, loss of elasticity, age spots and

a leathery texture. Protection should start early, particularly with children who enjoy outdoor play on sunny days.

For your enhanced comfort and relaxation please arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointments to

ensure that your treatment is suited to your needs and expectations. Please be prepared to answer some general health

and wellness intake questions.

Please note: Do not shave or use any prescribed or over the counter exfoliators the day of any spa services, as these

can be contraindicated with certain spa treatments. If you have any questions please ask your spa consultant.

• Gratuities are not accepted. While we appreciate the thought, the best tip you

can do is to refer a friend to us or invest in your home care program.

• Speak up. We want you to be very comfortable and relaxed during your visit to Renovus. Please tell your service

provider if you are ever uncomfortable at ANY time. Share your personal wellness concerns so they may best

design the ideal treatment procedure for you. We are here to assist you in looking and feeling your best.

Cancellation / Tardiness Policy

Sometimes there is no choice but to cancel or change an appointment. We kindly request 24-hour notice for any

cancellation. When scheduling multiple service appointments or any spa package, a confirmation with a major credit card

or gift certificate number is required and failure to cancel within 24 hours will result in a 50% service charge. Failure to

provide any notice will result in charging the full service price to your credit card, or full redemption of the gift certificate.

Late arrival for an appointment may result in an adjustment to the service time.

Renovus is a place to escape from everyday responsibilities. So that guests may enjoy their treatments, we kindly

request that children do not accompany adults for their services. We welcome children for their own appointments and

request adult supervision at all times.

services and products offered. You may also purchase dollar denomination gift cards. Gift certificates are non-refundable
