Resume Map A basic tutorial

Introduction:

Instead of your simple but elegant resume on paper, have you considered creating an

interactive map that could show/highlight your places of employment or maybe some community

service projects you have participated in? Well, below is a simple tutorial that will get you started as well

as familiarize you with the ArcGIS online cloud based mapping portal.

In addition to this, there will be a slightly more advanced section that will allow you to use

ArcMap to import a shapefile to the online portal. By doing this, you can get more creative with the

ArcGIS online portal and add graphs as well as more advanced popups.

So enough chit-chat, lets begin…

Step by Step Instructions

1. Open up an internet browser and visit www.arcgis.com

2. Once on the site click on sign in up at the top, this will bring up the above screen…

3. Click on Create a Personal Account

4. Follow the required steps and be sure to follow any directions pertaining to the privacy

policy/terms of use

5. Once you have created your account/activated it, sign in

6. After signing in, you will be brought back to the home page; Click on MY CONTENT

7. Above are some of my maps that I have previously created, to begin simply click on

Create Map

8. Now you should have a screen similar to what is shown above; Depending on where you

are located in this world you will click there. Then to help zoom, use the thermometer

style zoom bar. *One can also search via the search feature to more accurately locate

“your world”

9. Once you have your location (In this example I will be showing mine, which is located in

western Massachusetts.) Click on the Basemap button and a drop down menu will

appear.

10. Any of the choices provided are great but in this example I will be using Bing Maps

Hybrid (This basemap utilizes information that will show a base layer with major roads as

well as high resoultion data to create a great visual image)

11. Once you have added the Bing Maps Hybrid base layer, you should have a much clearer

picture that has a more lifelike appearance. Let’s add a good starting point on our

resume map?

i. I have zoomed in to my house location which is in South Deerfield, MA. To add a

new point on our map, you will need to click on Add and a drop down menu will

appear; click on Create Editable Layer. (This will allow you to add a new

point/polygon/line etc.)

12. A new popup should appear and will allow you to label the new layer you are adding to

your resume map. (I have named it Points of Interest)

i. After adding your first point a popup window as shown above will allow you to

add in information about your point including an image, website, or general

information. For the Title I have just renamed this point My House. As you

progress through your resume you can become more creative with these

popups.

ii. To add an image to this popup is very simple, any photo hosting website will

provide a link URL along with your newly uploaded photo that can be simply

pasted into the section of the popup labeled Image URL.

*Note if you take an image from the internet please give credit where credit is

due. In addition to this be aware that the image may not be there forever.

Take your own photos and host them on photo hosting websites such as

http://imageshack.us http://www.flickr.com/ http://beta.photobucket.com/ or

even via your Facebook account.

13. Now that you have added your first point on your resume map, as well as added some

useful information about that particular point including an image and website (if

applicable) it is important that you save your work.

14. Locate the Floppy Disk icon or Save, then click save as to give this map a title and some

other useful information. Once you have added in your title, etc. simply click on save

map.

Once you have saved your map, feel free to share it via your blog, Facebook, email, etc.! But

remember to keep it updated as you would your paper copy resume…So hopefully you have learned a

few things today about how to create a map online that is relevant to you in some way as well as just

navigating a new program. Feel free to share this tutorial!!
