Issue, Date

From Pastor Jim…

My Wittenberg English Ministry Experience I had the privilege of serving as resident pastor for the Wittenberg English Ministry during July. This ministry was started in 1995 and provides worship for the English-speaking visitors to the town that is the heart of the Reformation. I led worship at the Castle Church on the first Saturday evening and at the Town Church on the second Saturday. The Castle Church is where Luther posted the 95 Theses in 1517. The Town Church is where Martin and Katarina von Bora were married in 1525.

Our weekday devotions took place in the Corpus Christi Chapel. This 14th century chapel sits next to the Town Church and is lovingly cared for by Lutheran deaconesses. I made it my practice to invite visiting clergy to read lessons during the worship times. We had Lutheran clergy from Finland, Denmark, Germany, Canada and the United States. The US Lutheran pastors represented the ELCA, the Missouri Synod, and the North American Lutheran Church. I was pleased to have a Roman Catholic priest from New York participate.

One of my enjoyable experiences was participating twice in the Thursday evening English Stammtisch. This took place at the biergarten across the street from Luther’s House. The rule for the evening is that all participants must speak English only. Many of the folks are there to practice their English and appreciate those of us who speak English as our first language. I spoke with young folks from the university. I especially enjoyed speaking with young adults from Russia, the Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. Pastor Hans Kasse from the Lutheran World Federation participated, as did a retired ELCA Bishop from Texas. We had 12 the first evening and 20 the second evening.

Extensive refurbishing is taking place in Wittenberg in preparation for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. The Castle Church has lots of scaffolding and plywood. The Town Church is further along in their refurbishing. A poster indicated that the project for the Town Church alone would be costing about $10 million.

I appreciated visiting the Luther Garden, near the Castle Church. This field of grass has lots of trees being planted. These trees, to eventually number 500, are being given by Lutheran synods around the world. It is both humbling and joyful to see the dedication plaques at the base of the trees. They come from so many places. Some of the ones I remember include Lutheran synods in Japan and Hong Kong and Ethiopia and Canada and the United States and Uganda. The message of “salvation comes by grace through faith” is blossoming in wonderful ways. Thanks be to God!

Pastor Jim

July 2013

Income Snapshot – as of 30 June 2013

Treasurer’s Corner

A question has been asked recently about, “What does our M&M Line item within the

budget represent?” The Mission and Ministry Line item is a General Fund line item that is

used to pay for non-designated fund expenses within RLC. It is primarily used to pay the

Infrastructure Fixed expenses of the Mortgage, Staff Expenses, Property (including utilities)

and Administrative costs. So when you donate to the Mission and Ministry of RLC, you are

donating to those items that help provide for the basic operation of the church.

Shepherding Ministry at Resurrection Lutheran Church

New life has been breathed into our Shepherding Ministry resulting in our congregation being divided into

twelve flocks. Each flock is made up of 10 – 12 families who then come under the loving care of one or two

Shepherds who have been identified by the Pastors. Pastor Carol will be serving as Shepherd to the

Shepherds.

To elaborate just a bit, the Shepherds are to serve as extensions of pastoral ministry into the homes of

congregation members. Charged with the important task of keeping the lines of communication flowing, each

Shepherd is to be seen as a loving and caring extension of the pastoral office. Both Pastor Jim and Pastor

Carol welcome the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with all of our Shepherds in reaching out and extending a

helping hand whenever a need arises within our Resurrection family.

Do you know which “flock” you belong to?

Knowing which “flock” your family belongs to is important information, especially when a need arises with one

of our RLC families. Below is a listing of each of the “flocks” and their assigned family units. Many were

determined purely by demographics and proximity to the other families. The Shepherd(s) for each flock are

listed in bold print.. An (*) = active military.

What to expect from “your Shepherd”?

Once you’ve identified which “flock” your family belongs in, you can expect to hear from “your

Shepherd”. Your Shepherd will be calling to not only introduce themselves, but to ask for some

general information about your family. They will also want to know the best way to stay in contact in

hopes of keeping the lines of communication flowing (24/7) in both directions. Whether it is a need

for assistance or the passing on of some important news…your Shepherd wants to be first on your

speed dial. Therein begins the “cycle of care” that we want for each of our RLC families. Being

there for one another is vital to the life of our growing congregation…and timely communication

between yourself, your Shepherd, and your Pastors is the key.

THE 2013 ELCA CHURCHWIDE ASSEMBLY – PLUG IN!

For some reason when the phone rang one day this past April, I didn’t hang up after two

“Hellos” as I usually do. The gentleman on the other end asked for what sounded to me

like “Rod”. He was actually asking for “Rob” Martin, a nickname I am not used to. He

introduced himself and the name sounded familiar, as did the voice. I called him by his

first name and as soon as it was out of my mouth, I realized I was talking to Bishop

Mauney! But such is the grace and personality of our good Bishop that he wasn’t fazed by

my calling him “Jim”!

The next thought was “Why was the Bishop calling me?” Turns out, he called to let me

know that one of the folks elected at the 2012 Virginia Synod Assembly to attend the 2013

Churchwide Assembly as a voting delegate was not going to be able to make it. Since I was

the runner-up in the election, I was next in line to go. After checking with Chuck, I called

the Bishop back the next day and told him I’d be glad to go.

Just being able to participate in the CWA is a thrill! But as I begin to learn what is

involved, I am amazed. At this point, I have learned that the CWA will be an essentially

paperless process. What that means for ELCA members, is that everyone will have access

to the work of the CWA as it happens! In the past, the streaming videos, which will still be

available, were a wonderful window to the work of the CWA, linking each of us to the

mechanics of the ELCA. Now, with a tablet, such as an iPad, and an ELCA “app” (which is

free!), all members of the ELCA will have access to the same information voting delegates

will have. There are also apps for Android and Kindle tablets. Folks who do not have a

tablet device can use their laptop or desktop computer and view some of the information by

going to: http://m.guidebook.com/guide/4924/. Using a machine other than a tablet will

not provide the full functionality of the site. The app for the tablets is titled “ELCA 2013

Churchwide Assembly”.

Voting will be done by accessing voting devices with a four digit number received at

registration. As I understand it, use of the microphones will also require this four digit PIN.

I just hope I don’t forget it! There are already so many I have to remember!

The CWA starts August 12 and ends August 17. As I go through each day, I am going to

TRY to write up a “blog post” for posting on the RLC web site to try to convey some of the

flavor of the CWA. As I personally begin to prepare for this amazing journey, Bishop

Hanson has asked all ELCA congregations for 25 days of prayer in advance of the CWA.

That started on July 18. I have been assigned a prayer partner, who I will be contacting

prior to that date. The theme of the CWA is, “Always being made New. 25 years together in

Christ.” Keep me in your prayers during this journey!

We're All One Congregation

Because Resurrection will have only one worship service August, the hospitality committee will be hosting "We're All One Congregation" church picnic. The picnic will be held after our last single service on August 25th. Each family is asked to bring a main dish PLUS either a salad, side dish, or dessert. This event will be great opportunities to greet our friends from the "other" service.

GERMANNA CONFERENCE REVIVAL

October 6th

at St. Luke Lutheran Church

What, you might ask, is a Lutheran Revival?

The continuing theme is, "Revive, Refresh, Rejoice," and that gives a great sense of what this revival day is

about! We have wonderful workshops and educational opportunities to revive our sense of mission in

Christ. We come together to be refreshed by fellowship with folks from outside our own congregation.

We rejoice in worship together- all "Lutheran" and yet wonderfully diverse in style and form.

The revival this year will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church.

The schedule will be:

2:00pm Registration

2:30pm Workshops with guest speakers

3:30pm Fellowship Meal with our neighbor churches

5:00pm Worship service with communion and special music from many congregations

You won't want to miss this opportunity!! Mark your calendar now!

By The Grace of God, I Go!

The past few weeks of summer have been filled with excitement and

enthusiasm for me. I had the opportunity to go on vacation for a week to the Outer Banks and see extended family that I have not seen in

years. In June, I was blessed with the opportunity to go as a chaperone on our youth retreat and was overwhelmed with the spiritual growth I witnessed. What an amazing, priceless experience it is to see God

working in the lives of our youth! Many of you attended the “Operation Opera” concert at our church. What a wonderful gift of music that event shared with us and the “love donation” was given our church. Lots of energy will be flowing through RLC this month,

especially with vacation Bible School, Aug 12-13, Classical Music Sunday on Aug 11, and Gospel Music Sunday on Aug 25! Many things are happening in the music ministry at our

church and you won’t want to miss a Sunday! You will hear more about the fall music opportunities in next month’s newsletter. I hope you are enjoying your summer and the beautiful weather we’ve had in July. May you have peace and joy in your hearts.

Love, Amy

Resurrection Lutheran Church is sponsoring another Blood Drive on Sunday, August 11 from 8 AM to 1 PM in the Fellowship Hall. The units of blood that are obtained go to the hospitals in Fredericksburg. Summer is a critical time with blood shortages. We are

encouraging members of the church, friends, and others to donate blood that day. To make the process move more swiftly and efficiently, we are promoting on-line appointments which

can be made by the donor going to Redcrossblood.org or through Judy Troast at 540-972-5541. Walk-ins are also welcome. The life you save with a blood donation could be yours, a family member or a friend. Please step up and donate.

Thank you, Health Ministry Team.

Faith in Action

God’s Work. Our Hands.

Food of the Month Canned Meat

(Spam, Treet, Chili, Tuna, Chicken) Thank you for supporting the Food Pantry at Christ Lutheran Church.

Thurman Brisben Center

Sunday, August 11th, is our day to cook at the Thurman Brisben Center. Please help by providing

one of the food items for this meal. Sign up on the “BEE” bulletin board in the narthex. All food should be at the church by 10:00am on Sunday, August 11th.

“God’s work. Our hands” Sunday is September 8th The Evangelical Lutheran Church is celebrating its 25

th anniversary this year, and it has challenged us to celebrate in a

BIG way—by joining all the other ELCA churches (nearly 10,000) in a day of service across the country. We’ll roll up

our sleeves, join 4 million other Lutherans, and get to work!

At Resurrection, we’ll celebrate “God’s work. Our hands” Sunday by collecting nonperishable food for two local area

food banks, the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank and the Wilderness Food Pantry. This won’t be our average, everyday

food collection because—remember?—we’re celebrating in a BIG way!

Here’s how it will work:

RLC members will be asked to bring in nonperishable foods during August and

September, up until (and including) Sunday, September 8.

Each RLC member (kids, too!) will be invited to join a “God’s Work. Our

Hands” team. Opportunities to sign up will be offered soon, and team tee

shirts will be available for purchase (but not required).

The members of the teams will be scheduled to head for one of several

participating local supermarkets after worship on September 8. They’ll

stand outside the stores passing out lists of the items most needed by the

two food banks.

Shoppers will purchase some of the needed items and place them in special containers at

the supermarkets.

More details will be provided soon. In the meantime, please circle the day on your calendar and get ready to celebrate the

birthday of a church that is “Always being made new.”
