Reading comprehension

One response to the many wars of the 17th century was to seek stability by increasing the power of the monarchy. Absolute monarchs could make laws, levy taxes and administer justice. The best example of an absolute monarch is Louis XIV of France. French power and culture spread throughout Europe. Louis XIV was only a child when he came to power. When his nobles tried to seize more power by creating a revolt, it was viciously put down by Louis’ adviser Cardinal Mazarin. When Mazarin died, Louis was 23 years old and wanted to rule on his own. He became known as the Sun King, the center of power in France, and a “light” to his people. The instability of childhood had left him with the firm belief that he must rule absolutely and avoid any disunity.
