Revision AssemblyY11 January 2019

Revision- an uphill struggle?!

Aim:

• To explore practical ways of revising effectively.

Y11 Pupil voice:

• Pupil voice completed with 2/3 of the year group so far.

• Just under half of you (46%) said you are revising regularly. However about a quarter of these people were unsure how effective their revision actually was.

• Of the other half of the year group questioned 25% have yet to start regular revision and feel unsure of what are effective revision strategies

• 29% of you have no idea where to start with your revision.

Pupil voice:

• Positives from pupil voice.

• Lots of you have started to revise- This is brilliant. The sooner you start the better

• Lots of you have revision guides and have started to make flash cards.

Staff revision group• Members of staff have set up a group to help you with your revision for

GCSEs.

• We meet fortnightly to discuss ideas and want to give as much help and support as we possibly can.

• What we have agreed to do so far:

• To give assemblies on effective revision techniques.

• To hold an information evening for parents (Tuesday 22nd January).

• To provide you with a bank of revision resources from across subject areas.

• Sixth form study room to be available after school from next week for those of you who want to revise after school.

• To hold revision sessions for staff looking to brush up on research based revision techniques.

Our focus for effective revision

• To improve the quality of revision you are doing.

This means that:• Copying notes

• Reading notes

• Highlighting

• Making flashcards

• Cramming

•Are not effective revision techniques •UNLESS YOU DO SOMETHING ELSE WITH IT WHEN

YOU ARE DONE!•We want to teach you 6 new strategies to help in your

revision process.

The Learning Scientists:

• Research based effective learning strategies.

• 6 strategies to ensure that you are actively revising.

• Assemblies to cover each strategy and give you ideas of how to use them.

• Not a quick fix, but will ensure you are revising effectively and making the best use of your time.

Revision- an uphill struggle?!

Learningscientists.org

6 strategies:

• Dual coding. The strategy for today

• Retrieval practice

• Spaced learning

• Interleaving

• Concrete examples

• Elaboration

• The Learning Scientists website (learningscientist.org) has tons of resources and ideas to get you learning effectively.

Dual Coding

• A really simple but incredibly effective revision activity.

• Read your class notes/revision guide/flashcards/ kip sheets etc

• Then find pictures or symbols to represent you have just read.

Dual Coding

• Then put away your notes can you use just the pictures to explain what you were revising (I find post it notes are helpful here)

• Put it somewhere safe and return to it after a few days/weeks/months what else can you add to it?

• Can you devise a question based on it eg: Explain What Catholics believe about resurrection (8)

Here’s my flashcard on 20th century Britain

Here’s my dual coding on 20th Century Britain:

Families have changed in the 20th century because:

Divorce is easier to getHomosexuals can now get married and have children

Not everyone wants to wait to get married before they live together

Women are more independentPeople re-marry

Grand parents help out with child care whilst parents workMen are no longer the breadwinners in the family

In a few days go back to what you dual coded and use it the opposite way around. Can you remember what the pictures represent? For example could you use these images to help you write a paragraph about Catholic beliefs about resurrection?

Should look something like this! Words in red represented by a picture.

Catholics believe that death is a transitionnot the end. They believe we will have a bodily resurrection like Jesus did. This means both our body and soul will live on after death. They believe this because it is in all 4 Gospels and St Paul teaches it.

Dual coding• Instead of copying information on to notes and flash cards draw it. Or dual code

notes and flashcards you already have.

• Go back to it later, can you remember what the pictures mean? Check against your original information.

• Devise an exam style question about it. Answer it with the resources you made.

• Experiment with different kinds of pictures to suit different subject areas. Why not try:

• Timelines

• Infographics

• Cartoon strips

• Diagrams

• Or graphic organisers

• Make them colourful and interesting

• Don’t worry about your ability to draw, only you will see it! Also don’t spend too long on the drawings, its what you do with them that counts.

Top tip:

• Keep all the revision resources you make, your future self will thank you for it.

• Periodically go back to the resources you have made over days, weeks, months. Use a different colour pen and add to what you have already done. This is important it will help you to see your own progress. If you don’t want to write on the resources you have made use post it notes instead.
