Bus cancellations are also posted on http://www.mybigyellowbus.ca/ by our various transportation partners. Should there be the need for the school to close, this information will be sent out to the various media first thing in the morning as well as posted on the Thames Valley website at www.tvdsb.ca. We were thrilled to see so many families come out to our holiday concert where our entire school put on an amazing singing and instrumental production. We hope that you enjoyed the performances. We would like to thank Ms. Rees for her hard work and dedication and early morning practices getting ready for the production. We would also like to thank Mrs. Schmitt-Bindner for her organization and disbursement of tickets and a give shout out to the many staff who helped out in various capacities to help pull everything together. As part of our learning as a team, we will be digging deeper into math learning based on data that we are collecting from our students to determine what strategies students are using as well as to determine where we as a staff need to do some explicit instruction so that students expand their repertoire of strategies that they can use to solve a math prob- lem. We look forward to learning and growing together and further supporting student learning. We would like to take this time to welcome some new leaders to Riverside! Mrs. Renaud will be joining our team of EA as we had to say goodbye to Mrs. Eveland. She will be working in Mrs. Young s Grade 7/8 classroom on a 0.2 schedule and will be providing classroom support for many teachers focusing on Mathematics for the remaining 0.6 schedule. We would like to welcome back Mrs. Miller to Grade 1 as she is returning from leave. We would also like to say good- bye to Ms. Jovanovich who was supporting our students in her role as Educational Assistant. We wish all these ladies the very best in their future endeavours! …….Principals message continued on page 2

Kindergarten registration begins on Monday, January 21st. If you or anybody you know (a neighbour, relative or friend) has a child to register for kindergarten for September 2019, it is important that you or those you know call the school and talk to Mrs. Milonas or Mrs. Miszczyk about the procedures and available times to register. Please help us with getting this message out to the greater community.

On Friday, February 8th, term 1 reports for all students (JK-8) will be sent home. Students have been assessed throughout the term and have been given various opportunities to demonstrate their thinking and learning in the various subject areas. Should you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

On Thursday, January 10th, Oakridge Secondary School will be hosting an information night for our Grade 8 students and their families in the Oakridge auditorium beginning at 7p.m. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend to learn more about the opportunities that Oakridge has to offer and about the registration pro-cess. Students and families that are looking at other Thames Valley options should visit the Thames Valley website (www.tvdsb.ca ) for more information on when other information sessions are happening at our oth-er secondary schools. Please click the link below for more information. https://www.tvdsb.ca/en/schools/grade-8-parent-information-nights.aspx Over the next few weeks, our Grade 8 students will begin the registration process for Secondary School. If families would like to discuss viable options for their children, please feel free to contact Mrs. Leonard (Intermediate Learning Support Teacher), or your child’s classroom teacher to help you to make the best decision for your child.

We hope that you and your family have a happy and healthy 2019!

Mrs. Fortney, Principal & Mrs. Wilson, Vice-Principal

Safe Arrivals and Dismissals With the winter weather that has arrived, it is imperative that these guidelines are followed when driving your children to and from school; Staff are on duty to assist with safe arrivals and dismissals. Please be respectful

to our staff and follow their directions. The parking lot is smaller and lines are not always visible. Ensure that you are not

blocking the entrance or exit areas of the parking lot and leaving enough room between cars.

DO NOT park in the circle at the front of the school, as it is the school bus loading zone.

When parking on the Pinetree Drive, abide by the city parking signs and park as close to the curb as possible, so that our school busses can make it through the single lane without damaging any parked cars.

When driving to pick up students, if your child is not at the pick-up point and there are cars behind you, please make the loop and come back around to pick up your child.

When walking with your children, please ensure that you are supervising them as you walk through the parking lot, as there are many cars trying to exit the parking lot at the same time.

When walking in the parking lot or on school property, please be careful and look for slippery surfaces or black ice. We sand on a regular basis, but we are not able to cover everything at all times.

Be vigilant when driving on other streets near the school, such as Oak Park Drive and Valetta Drive, especially when students are arriving to school or being dismissed.

If you are parking on Oak Park Drive, please abide by the city street signs and only park in areas designated as parking. Parking in non-designated areas creates a very unsafe situation for everyone.

Be respectful of our neighbours and community members who live on streets near the school. Please do not block their driveways or park in their driveways.

Follow all city parking signs. Thank you for your cooperation and attention to these guidelines. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Fortney at school.

RIVERSIDE’S 6TH ANNUAL PJ'S FOR KIDS CAMPAIGN!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Riverside, you did it. Thanks to you, we were able to collect 370 pairs of pajamas for the Children’s Aid Society. We couldn’t have done it without the generous donations from the London Police Association and the London Professional Fire Fighter’s Association who each donated

$500.00 to the cause. You helped to make the holidays and lives of some deserving children a little bit better and a lot more cozier. Thank you so much from the students of 6C. - Mrs. Constantine

Candy Cane O’Grams From December 10th until December 21st we sold Candy Cane O’grams and all proceeds will be in support of the Salvation Army. We raised $214.80 to help our families in need during the holiday season! Thank you Riverside!

- Mrs. Milonas & Ms. Miszczyk

Holiday Concert follow up!

Congratulations to all members of the choir for their outstanding perfor-mances in our Holiday Concerts. Thank you so much to all members of our community who generously donated to the Riverside Music Program. We re-ceived a total of a whopping $1428.80 in donations. The proceeds will be used toward the purchase of new percussion instruments for primary & jun-ior students, sheet music, and instrument repair. Thank you again for your support! - Ms. Rees, Music teacher

...Library News...

Well done Riverside families! We are so thankful for your support of our Scholas-tic book Fair. We surpassed our goal and sold more than $7,500 in books. This will allow for us to buy lots of new books for our Library Learning Commons (LCC) as well as some new technology.

Mrs. Fortney, much to her delight will kiss a frog at an assembly in the new year! - Sincerely, Mrs. McCallum-Harris, Librarian

Dress Warmly and Enjoy Winter! When winter arrives, we can expect to see snow and cold weather. Be prepared and help your child enjoy the winter. Active outdoor play gives them the exercise and fun they need. Keep it fun and safe by dressing for the weather. Wear: A winter coat

Insulated boots

Mittens or gloves

A hat and neck warmer

Consider snow pants

Check the weather forecast before bed and plan ahead.

Dressing for cold weather helps children enjoy the outdoors,

‘cause after all… This is Canada, EH!
