Due to a recent city-wide reorganization, the Recreation Department is now a branch of the Department of PublicWorks and Community Services. We have changed our name to Department of CommunityServices to better reflect the services we offer to the community. We will continue to offer thesame fine programs and activities we have in the past. Only the name has changed.

RACQUETBALL COURTS - CHALLENGE COURTEnjoy the fast paced action on our two tournament quality exhibitioncourts. Be cheered on by friends observing through the glass backwalls or from the second-level observation deck. Racquetball use isincluded in your membership or day pass. Members may make areservation 2 days in advance. Our Drop-in Racquetball ChallengeCourt is scheduled on Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on bothcourts.All skill levels are welcome.

LOCKER ROOMS - SAUNAThe men’s and women’s dressing rooms are equipped with day use lockers, showers, and a dry sauna. The saunas provide a dry heat of 160-180 F. Lockers may be rented for $4 per month(Adults/EFT only) or for $48 annually (Adults/Pre-Paid only). See Child/Junior information in membership rates on restrictions for locker room, sauna use.

The Callinan Sports and Fitness Center is owned by the citizens of Rohnert Park and operatedby the Rohnert Park Community Services Department. It is the primary objective of the RohnertPark Community Services Department to provide a clean and smoothly run facility for the ben-efit of all users. Both members and drop-in guests are welcome to explore and enjoy the varietyof recreational activities we have to offer.

HOURS OF OPERATION

The Sports and Fitness Center is open Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. We are closed on New Year’s Day,Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and ChristmasDay. Restricted hours are observed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Tournaments,repairs, and maintenance may result in periods when the facilities are partially or totally closed.

CARDIO CENTEROur Cardio Center is over 4,600 sq. ft. and equipped with the latestexercise equipment. We offer a complete selection of Nautilus weightmachines for strength training and toning. For your aerobic exerciseneeds the Cardio Center provides a large variety of equipmentincluding Elliptical Trainers, Treadmills, Stairmasters, Recumbent andUpright Exercycles. The Cardio Center is also outfitted flat-screen high-definition televisions and the Club FM System for stereoreceptionthrough your own personal headphones.

OLYMPIC FREE WEIGHT ROOMLocated just across the hall from the Cardio Center is our OlympicFree Weight Room. The Free Weight Room is equipped with over3000 lbs of Olympic style barbells, dumbbells, a Smith machine anda variety of exercise benches. The benefit of free weight exercise iswell documented and this is a great place to start your workout.Only adult members, teen members and paid drop-in participantsover the age of 14 have access to the Cardio Center and OlympicFree Weight Room.

PERSONAL TRAININGLose weight, increase energy, improve overall health, reduce the chance of injury and finally get the results you always wanted. Our PersonalTrainer Gregg Adams and his staff will design a personalized fitness training program around your busy life style. Call him at (707) 480-9214for more information, or stop by the front desk. Cost is $99 for 3 sessions. For adult members only.

Memberships may be purchased through monthly EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer via a checkingaccount). Pre-paid annual memberships are also available. Included in your membership are theuse of the Racquetball Courts, Cardio Center, Free Weight Room, Locker Room, andBasketball/Volleyball Open Gym sessions, as well as the entrance to Lap Swim sessions at the citypools (as available and subject to change). Membership term begins the day the membership ispurchased - memberships are not transferable. Card Fee is $3.

The $30 pre-paid annual membership for Juniors (parents mustsign the application) is restricted to Basketball/Volleyball OpenGym and Racquetball only. Juniors may use the locker roomfacilities (spa, sauna, or showers) ONLY if they are supervisedby a paying adult. Juniors are NOT permitted in the CardioCenter and Free Weight Room areas. Junior day passes areavailable for $4 per visit. Does not include lap swim.

TEENS (14-17)

Teen memberships may be purchased through EFT ($14 permonth) or pre-paid annually for $168. Parents must sign theapplication for teen members. Teen members have access to allfacilities as well as the entrance to Lap Swim sessions at the citypools (as available and subject to change). Teen day passes areavailable for $8 per visit. Limit is 4 children per adult. Please check in at the front desk.

The Rohnert Park Community Services Department's Swim School follows the American Red CrossLearn to Swim program. Below is a brief description of each of the courses offered by the theDepartment. Please read the descriptions carefully to determine which class to register for. All class-es in the under five-year-old group are taught based on the Red Cross Courses of Parent-Infant,Parent-Toddler, and Preschooler. All courses are Monday through Thursday for 25 minutes unlessotherwise noted.

The Rohnert Park Community Services Department offers one of the finest learn-to-swim programs anywhere. Each year over 1,200 children are taught American RedCross lessons in our city pools. Our highly trained instructors make all the courseseffective, interesting and fun. Students are grouped with other students of similar ageand ability. Group sizes are kept small to insure careful attention to each student.

Beginning swimming for children, age 6 and older. Skills taught will include: water adjustment, breath holding, rhythmicbreathing, prone float or glide, back float or glide, and safety skills.

For children 6 and older who has passed the Level 1 course. Skills children will learn include: prone glide with kick, back glidewith kick, beginner armstroke, beginner stroke, winging, personal flotation devices, deep water adjustment and safety skills.

For children 6 and older who have passed the Level 2A course. Skills include: back crawl with arms, combined stroke front,combined stroke back, turn over, leveling off, and safety skills.

For students who have passed the Level 2B course. This course increases the endurance of the students, improves their ability tocare for themselves while in the water, and introduces them to the elementary backstroke, the survival stroke, treading water,diving and underwater swimming, and more safety skills.

This course provides the students with the opportunity to learn the elements of good swimming by introducing the students to:breaststroke arms and kick, sidestroke arms and kick, and the coordination of both strokes while providing the opportunity toimprove the crawl and elementary back strokes, turns for all strokes, and sculling and safety skills.

The emphasis of this course is to: increase the students' endurance through a considerable amount of swimming; to improve thestudents' abilities to perform coordinated strokes and the parts of the strokes, they had previously learned; and to teach newskills to increase their overall aquatic abilities. New skills taught include: backstrokes, snail scull, canoe scull, long shallow dive,diving off a board, surface, and safety skills.

This course starts with a basic strokes evaluation, introduces inverted breaststroke, over arm sidestroke, and Trudgen stroke. Tobe eligible to enroll in this course, individuals must have successfully completed Level 5 course or be able to satisfactorily performthe requirements for this course. They must also show evidence of having completed Emergency Water Safety or Lifeguard Training.

This course reviews and perfects all strokes and skills presented at previous levels of the Learn to Swim program, encouragesgood lifetime fitness habits, and teaches advanced rescue skills.

A class open to the child six months to eighteen months of age. This class will acquaint children with the fun and buoyancyof the water. Parent is required to be in the water with the child each day. Children who are not potty trained must wearswim diapers.

A class open to 18 months old to 3 year olds. Emphasis is placed on learning beginning swimming skills through specificinstructions, games, and activities created for this age group. Parents are required to be in the water with the child each day.

Small group classes designed for 3-5 year olds. Emphasis is placed on water adjustment, how to follow directions, rhythmicbreathing, opening eyes for underwater exploration, front and back float skills through specific instructions, games andactivities created for this group.

An extension of our Tadpole class. This class emphasizes front and back float, front and back kick glide and the beginningarm strokes on the front and back. For more advanced students only.

For more advanced students in the 3-5 year old age group. This class emphasizes learning to swim farther independently,how to change direction, to swim underwater, to take a breath when swimming, and to roll over when tired to rest.

This class is the most advanced for 3-5 year olds The children will be swimming the width and length of the pool. Theemphasis is still on fun in the water and the children learn more about safety.

*Poolside registration is from 9:00 am - Noon for morning sessionsand 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. for evening sessions. All remaining open-ings will be filled at the pool on the first day of class.

You'llget all the training you need to be prepared to respond to aquaticemergencies, and you'll be certified by the American Red Cross - therecognized leader in water safety education. American Red Cross Guard StartLifeguarding Tomorrow! Do you have a desire to be a lifeguard but you’re not 15 years of age? If you’rebetween the ages of 11 and 14, Guard Start is for you. This new Red Cross course introduces you to the skillsand pre-requisites needed to enter into the Red Cross Lifeguarding Program when you turn 15. All partici-pants will receive a Guard Start T-shirt transfer. You must have completed the fifth grade, swim the frontcrawl stroke (freestyle) for 50 yards continuously while breathing to the side, tread water for one minuteusing arms and legs, and dive into deep water and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.

The fee is $70 for residents and $77 for non-residents. You may sign-up in advance for this course using theregistration form in this guide, on-line or in person at the Community Center.

This course is an additional course that covers the basics of teachingRed Cross Swim Lessons. Students successfully completing this coursewill be certified and fully qualified Red Cross Swim Instructors.

Calling all kid chefs! Come and spend a week preparing marvelous, magnificent, and healthy recipes. Budding kid chefs will learn about basic food preparation techniques and vocabulary, how to read recipes, safe food handling, and of course, how to make and taste all of the foods that we create. Each day we will explore a different summer cooking theme to include: Camp Chow, Dr. Seuss,International Delights, Movie Morsels, and Fresh from the Garden. We will make 4-5 recipes each day. All recipes will be vegetarian. OnFriday we will open our “restaurant” for one day. Student chefs will prepare and serve lunch to their parent as the culmination of our weekof learning. Each student chef will make their own apron and a recipe book to bring home. Please join us for a special week of cooking!

Lori Cleveland is an elementary school teacher for the Cotati-Rohnert Park School District. She has a master’s degree in education and hasbeen teaching cooking classes for our department for the past year. She has taught kindergarten and is currently teaching 4th grade. Petaluma School of Ballet Children’s Pre-Ballet

Ages: 3-6 5-week sessions Petaluma School of Ballet Staff Community Center Garden Room

Children are taught basic ballet movement. They will dance and pretend as they act out stories using dance movement. We use a varietyof music to enhance musical rhythms by clapping and listening, using stretching and improvisation while having lots of fun. Let us shareour love of dance with your youngster. Parents may observe the last class in each session.

Classes are taught by the Petaluma School of Ballet staff who have studied at the San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Berkeley BalletTheatre, and Ballet West with over 15 years of teaching experience. They bring a wealth of professional knowledge to your child’s danceexperience. Classes are ongoing. For those classes that are full, registration for new students starts the 16th of each month for the followingmonth. (For example, on May 16th, new students for June will be accepted, space allowing.)

Clothing for all ballet classes: Girls, any colored leotard (no attached skirts), pink tights and pink leather ballet shoes. Boys, white T-shirt,shorts, socks and black leather ballet shoes. In this 7 hour course, students will be trained in adult, infant and child CPR as well as practice choke saving skills, plus defibrillator (AED)training. The HealthSource is an American Heart Association training center providing the gold standard of training.

The First Aid training will look at sudden illnesses and injuries and learn the steps to take to prevent the individual from worsening whilewaiting for advanced care. In many cases advanced care will be unnecessary due to the proper actions of the first responder. The class isdesigned for employee training who's duty is to respond to first aid emergencies or regulatory requirements - teachers, camp counselors,parents, grandparents, drivers, construction workers, landscape workers, winery and vineyard personnel, bystanders, and individualswho want the training for the knowledge.

Driver education is a California required course for teens to receive adriver’s license. It is the first step that must be taken so the teen canreceive a driver’s permit. The course includes much parental involvementand is fun, interactive and educational. Coursework can be completed atany time of the day or night. Students may choose from an internetcourse or a home study course. (For the home study course, add $15shipping and handling.) Rohnert Park Community ChoraleThe Rohnert Park Community Chorale, a very talented and friendly singing group, is now in its 24th year under the direction of Margot Godolphin. Experienced adultsingers of all ages in all voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) are invited tojoin the chorale at the beginning of each music season (Spring-February or Fall-September). Rehearsals are held each Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at theSenior Center, 6800 Hunter Drive. Music varies from light classics to folk, jazz andshow tunes. Community BandThis group of musicians from the community and surrounding areasmeets once a week on Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. at Burton AvenueRecreation Center, 7421 Burton Avenue, to rehearse and perform stan-dard concert band literature including marches, show tunes, and otherpopular music transcribed for concert band. There is no charge for theband, but you must have your own instrument and music stand.

Community Services is proud to offer our on-line registration program, “RecEnroll”. All youneed is a Client and PIN Number and a valid VISA or MasterCard. RecEnroll can be accessed 24hours a day, seven days a week. The system is secure and all personal information is encryptedand never stored on city computers. Personal information is only used for department transactions and never shared with anyone.If you are a previous participant in our programs, you already have approved access to RecEnroll. All you need is your Client Number and PIN. You can request your numbers by send-ing an e-mail to [email protected] or calling (707) 588-3456 during normal business hours. If you have never participated in our programs, or are returning after a three year or more absence, you may request an account on-line. PaymentsThe Community Services Department accepts Visa or MasterCard, money orders, cash or checks in payment for classes, buildingrentals and memberships.

Non-resident Fee There is a non-resident fee of $7.00 per person per class for all individuals residing outside the City of Rohnert Park who wish to enroll in programs or classes. The fee can differ for some programs.

CancellationRegister early! Classes will be cancelled 24 hours prior to the first class meeting if they do not have the minimum number ofstudents required.

RefundsCustomers desiring a refund due to a change of schedule, illness, unable to attend or change of mind onregistering for the activity, can receive a pro-rated refund if requested before 1/2 of the activity meetings have taken place. A $5 processing fee will be deducted from your refund. If the Community Services Department cancels or changes an activity, an appropriate refund will be issued for the unused portion of the activity. (The processing fee and process is differentfor summer camps and senior citizen trips. Please see program registration information.) Refunds will be mailed within 10-14working days of the request. Your satisfaction is our goal!

LIABILITY RELEASE:In consideration of the acceptance of my application for any Community Services Department classes/activities, I hereby waive, release, and discharge any and all claims for damages for death, personal injury or property damage which I may have, or which may hereafter accrue to me, as a result of participation in said event.This release is intended to discharge in advance the City of Rohnert Park, its officers, employees or agents from liability, unless the cause of the accident/loss is the sole negligence of the city, its officers, employees or agents. It is understood that some recreational activities involve an element of risk or danger of accidents, and knowing thoserisks, I hereby assume those risks. It is further understood and agreed that this waiver, release and assumption of risk is to be binding on my heirs and assigns.
