GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM

• The way you and your team act and present themselves.

• This isn’t a football competition: we don’t beat each other up and brag about the injuries. We lift each other up and keep

ourselves humble.

• Ask yourself: How would my grandma want me to behave/treat her/treat others?

PEARLS OF WISDOM

• Have an early parent meeting: inform them of key dates (eg Build day Oct 6, Meet Nov 3, Meet Dec 1, Meet Dec

29, Judgement Day Jan 26, Championship Feb 2), assign adults to volunteer on these dates, request/assign adults

to arrange for team lunches at the events, etc…

• First few team meetings: ice breakers, strategy planning, team name/logo/tshirt, fundraising,

volunteering/community outreach plans

• Once kit arrives start building and testing and programming

• Have access to a practice field? If not… consider ordering one

• Need help? Reach out to area director or on FB pages for a team that can send someone to help you. Check

Youtube and Reddit for ideas teams release

MANUALS

6

Game Manual 1: Rules for the Year

Game Manual 2: Game specific rules

Mentor manual

Engineering Notebook Manual

What I wished I saw earlier:

• Game Manual 1: labels for robot: power and

initialization

• Robot inspection checklist: Appendix B: read

carefully: check it and your robot before meets

TEAM BUILDING W h o a r e t h e s e k i d s ? A n d w h a t a m I d o i n g w i t h

t h e m ?

Consider ice breakers to get to know your teammates.

Starting:

• game reveal,

• parent meeting: assign tasks: transportation, meals for meets, sign up

as volunteers for FIRST events on first website, complete sign up on

line for members of the team, etc…

• Game points and strategy

• Logo, t-shirts, table decorations

Later:

• Volunteering

• Fundraising

• Meets/events 7

ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK

• Guidelines are on FirstInspires.org website.

• A good notebook would help me build your robot just by

reading your notebook

• Electronic or handwritten: if electronic need to print out a

hard copy for meets. Turned in at start of every meet.

• Cover needs team name and number on it!

• Sections: might change annually: see Engineering Notebook

guidelines

• Can be used to win awards

ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK PEARL OF WISDOM

9

• Document EVERYTHING!!! WHEN? WHERE? WHY? HOW?

• Include sketches, trials, obstacles, designs

• Each page should be numbered and include date and time

of the meeting it is representing

• Every meeting: each teammate spends 10 min

documenting what they did

• If 1 teammate wants to be notebook captain, they can lay

out daily agenda/design. Check it after meetings.

• We used Google Drive so multiple kids can be documenting

at one

• After print pages, assign teammates to edit and sign each

page to approve it

FABRIKAM

NUTS AND BOLTS

• Review game manual 2 for scoring and game info

• Decide on a strategy for scoring in autonomous and driver

controlled period

• Video reveal isn’t 100% of the info you need to know about the

game

• Build towards your chosen strategy and design

• Programming: decide on Engineering Blocks (similar to Scratch) or

On Bot Java.

• Secure EVERYTHING! Phones, batteries, team number, tighten

wheels and moving parts before matches.

MEETS: MUST KNOW • Starts early and last the entire day: will need lunch, drinks, snacks

• Every team needs a registered and screened volunteer.

• Gracious Profesionalism: starts in the parking lot.

• Turn in printed team roster from firstinspires website and Engineering Notebook

• EVERYONE needs safety glasses if they enter the pit

• Robot inspection and Field inspection- bring printed inspection sheets.

• Drivers meetings: drivers and coaches wear identifying pins

• Scouting: what do other teams do during autonomous and driver times: once schedule of matches is released your team will want to

circle up with those teams to make a game strategy

• Matches take place. Judges and refs are volunteers. Their word is final. Your alliance partners change throughout the day with each

match: usually 6 matches per meet.

• Help clean up.

• Stay for awards.

• Thank your volunteers.
