Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP)

Since 1946, Rotarians in Georgia, USA, have promoted world peace through understanding by offering scholarships to international students for one year of study in Georgia colleges and universities. Georgia Rotary Clubs sponsor students recommended by a Rotary Club in their home country. The students become adopted members of a Georgia "host family," but live on-campus at the school they attend. This is a scholarship program, not an exchange! Each year, about 80 students from all over the world make friends in the United States and other nations and learn about differing cultures and life styles. Georgia Rotarians believe "Peace is Possible" and through GRSP promote international goodwill through the bonds of friendship and understanding. Inside Today:

Bill was born in Columbus, Georgia and grew up in Phenix City, Alabama. Bill is the only child of Edna and Harvey Kelly. Even though an only child, he had many cousins. Edna and Harvey had a total of 12 siblings. After graduating from Central High School, Bill entered the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In addition to being an excellent university, it was a national football power. This was during the heyday of Coach Bear Bryant. The football stadium held a whopping 30,000 fans. Today it holds over 100,000. In fact, part of the expanded stadium sits where the Signa Chi house once sat. However, there were some great times in those days in Denny Stadium. Bill graduated (almost on time) with a degree in accounting. He also went through the ROTC program and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps upon graduation. With the commission was an obligation to serve on active duty for at least two years. He entered the U.S. Army on November 1, 1963. After being in the army for 3 weeks, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. It was scary. They were restricted to the base for several days, because they did not know who would commit such an act. During his two years in the Army, the Vietnam conflict heated up quite a bit. Almost everyone who came into the Army went through some training, and then went straight to Vietnam. Bill spent the full two years at Fort Gordon, Georgia in Augusta. Augusta was not a very pretty or exciting place in November and December. However, in April it took on a totally different

complexion. The azaleas and the dogwoods began to bloom. Visitors like Jack, Arnie, Chi Chi, Gary and many others came to town. It was not unusual to sit next to them at a local downtown restaurant. What fun days. During his stay in the Army, Congress passed the GI Bill. That enabled Bill to go back to graduate school in Tuscaloosa. Upon graduation from graduate school with a Masters Degree in finance, Bill went to work with First Union National Bank in Charlotte, N.C. After a year of in-house training as a credit analyst, Bill was transferred to Greensboro – another great city to live in.

In 1975, Bill felt the need to get back close to home, and he landed a good job with First National Bank of Cobb County. Marietta has become home to Bill and his family during these 35 years. As with most bankers, Bill has worked for several in Marietta. In addition to FNB-CC, there was Charter Bank and Georgian Bank. Bill retired from Georgian Bank in 2009. He is now working on a contract basis for Metro Bank. Bill has two grown children from a previous marriage. Kathy and Keith both graduated from North Cobb High School, and live in the Marietta area. Kathy has three sons who attend Mt. Paran Christian School, and are active in sports. Bill and Gail have been happily married for 25 years. Their son, Zach, is a senior at Mt. Paran Christian School. Zach is trying to decide which college to attend next year. Both of Bill’s parents are alive and well. They are 93 & 92 and have been married for 73 years. They moved to an assisted living facility in Kennesaw in December 2010. It has been a real joy to have them so close. Bill joined the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro in 1989. He was sponsored by Dick Best, and inducted by President Bob Harper. He was selected Rotarian of the Year in 1992 by Past President Harrison Williams. Bill also served as club president in 1994-95. He is still a very active member of the club and enjoys the fellowship and extraordinary service that Rotary provides.

Rotaract

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they’re sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary.

As one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 8,400 clubs in about 170 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

All Rotaract efforts begin at the local, grassroots level, with members addressing their communities’ physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service. Rotaractors:

• Work together with Interact clubs or mentor Interactors;

• Participate in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards;

• Often become Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars or Group Study Exchange team members;

• Often seek membership in their local Rotary club after their Rotaract membership ends.

Did You Know? Our weekly publication, the Metroliner, has been with us since the club’s founding. Charter member and former Delta Pilot Bill Callaway “borrowed” the name from United Airlines Metroliner flights. The publication has earned several “Best Bulletin” awards at District 6900 Conferences. The bulletin keeps us up to date on activities of the club, District 6900, and Rotary International. In recent years we have added the E-Metroliner, an expanded electronic edition of the Metroliner (5 to 7 pages), distributed to all members and “Friends of Rotary” who have their e-mail addresses registered on the club’s website.
