21 JulyOur meeting on 21 July will be devoted to commit-tee meetings. This will be the first opportunity inthis Rotary year for members to establish whatcommittee they are on and for directors to workthrough their visions with their committee people.
Directors and committee members should comeprepared to plan their actions and establish abudget for the year ahead.
Also, very importantly, this meeting sees the re-induction of Lyn Banner as a member of our club.It would be great to see all members on Tuesday.
28 JulyOn 28 July we will have as guest speaker Dr PeterHeysen, a well known local medical practitioner(retired), former Holdfast Bay councillor and amember of the Rotary Club of Glenelg.

President’s Paragraphs
What a great morning atRFDS for those who wereable to make it to the air-port on Tuesday morning.Thank you Malcolm, it wasa great idea. As I listenedand looked around, I wasreally impressed at themagnitude of the work
they do and I thought I knew quite a lot about theRFDS.It was obvious that they are a very worthy organi-zation and deserve a lot more consideration whenwe are looking for organizations to support. I wasthankful that when Brenley presented our chequefor $500, it was the second time in 6 months thatwe had donated $500.
As I drove to work and thought about the RoyalFlying Doctor Service I wondered why it had notbeen a bigger priority in fundraising while I was amember of both Apex and Rotary. It made merealise that Rotary and RFDS are in fact very simi-lar organisations to those not closely associatedwith either party. Most people have heard of bothorganisations and respect what they do but havelittle idea how they operate or how significant thework that is done by both. It is only through edu-cation or a chance encounter that we see behindthe scenes and wonder how could I do more tohelp. I know there are significant numbers offamily friends and neighbours who would wel-come an opportunity to come to a Rotary meetingand find out more about what we do and howthey could become involved with the work that wedo.
I therefore challenge all of our members tospend 10 minutes thinking about people theyknow who they think would be a good Rotarianand be able to give us a little of their time.
Thank you Jim Parkins for organising the recentBunnings BBQ and to those who worked on theday. It was another great effort.
Mike

Previous Meetings
The first meeting forthis Rotary year on 7July saw a comfortabletransition for PresidentMichael taking on hisnew role.Negotiations are under-way for us to take overthe lease of a storageshed at Brighton fromthe City of Holdfast Bay.This facility was for-
merly leased by the now defunct Rotary Club of Brigh-ton and will be shared with District 9520.Past President Peter Thompson introduced our ownRajni Lalsinghani as guest speaker. Rajni spoke onone of her great pleasures, “Bollywood” movies.India, with a population of some 1.2 billion people, hasa great appetite for movies. Some 1900 movies areproduced in India each year compared with around500 in Hollywood USA. Average cost per production is$2 million average. The B in “Bollywood” comes fromBombay, the former name of the city of Mumbai.Colour, movement and dancing scenes typify Bolly-wood movies. Rajni has extended an invitation to allmembers to a Bollywood movie evening at the Marioncinema complex on 22July. RSVP to Rajni by 16 July.
Our meeting on 14 July took the form of a vocationalvisit to the Royal Flying Doctor Base at Adelaide Air-port organized by Malcolm. Despite the wintry condi-tions, about 24 members and partners attended andwere escorted around in two groups. Ross Curtis, PRand fundraising manager, reminded us that the FlyingDoctor service commenced in Cloncurry, Qld. In 1928and hired QANTAS as the carrier in those early days. Now, the RFDS has 63 aircraft and does 100 flightseach day across Australia covering emergency andpreventative health clinics in remote areas.
RFDS is used extensively for patient transport toand from capital city medical specialists as well asfor organ transport.Aircraft in use here are Pilatus PC12 turbopropsand the first jet aircraft, a Pilatus 24, will come intoservice later this year at a cost of $10 million. Newpremises at Adelaide airport are under construc-tion. Approx. 90% of funding is through govern-ment. The remainder is from donations.
With this in mind,Past PresidentBrenley is shown pre-senting Ross with ourdonation of $500 .

Club Equipment
It is disappointing to see the problems encoun-tered with setting up and running our AV equip-ment at many meetings. We have a fairly new dataprojector but problems arise with trying to matchvarious lap top computers with the projector.Wouldn’t it be much better if we purchased a sec-ond hand lap top and matched the projector to itso we had all equipment available for all meetingsat a moment’s notice? It would look so much moreprofessional and all a speaker would need to pro-vide is their presentation on a USB memory stick.
Club FellowshipSome years ago, a small town in Greece twinnedwith a similar sized town in Spain. The mayor of the Greek town visited the Spanishtown. When he saw the palatial mansion belongingto the Spanish mayor, he asked how he could af-ford such luxury.
“Simple,” the mayor replied. “See that bridge overthere? The EU gave us a grant to construct a twolane bridge, but by constructing a single lane bridgewith traffic lights at either end I could save enoughmoney to build this place.”
The following year, the Spaniard visited the Greektown. He was simply amazed at the opulence in themayor’s home: gold taps, marble floors, diamondstudded door knobs, it was simply marvellous. When asked how he had managed to raise themoney to build this incredible house, the Greekmayor said, “You see that bridge over there?”
The Spaniard replied: “No”……….
Doesn’t take long !
