New River kicked off Spring Clean 2011, a Station-wide clean-up of the military grounds. Personnel conducted a week-long sweep, April 18, fi nalizing the last touches on the national holiday, Earth Day, April 22.

New River periodically organizes and conducts clean-ups in order to promote the safety, health, wellness and overall appearance of the Air Station community, and the week of Earth Day was the perfect opportunity to put the grounds back in top condition.

Across the Station, Marines worked to clean up streets, public buildings, and barracks. Station commands, depart-ments and tenant units accom-plished assigned tasks, ensur-ing a thorough sweep of the entire Installation.

A sweep of the outside grounds led to the removal of trash and debris includ-ing solid waste, paper, metal, and organic products. Civilian Station employees conducted the cleanup of the Highway 17 roadside. Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training

and Headquarters and Head-quarters Squadron Marines volunteered to clean up the shoreline starting from the Marina and ending at the Of-fi cers Club.

The Hazardous Waste Warehouse aboard the Station opened up to all family hous-ing residents so they could turn in their hazardous house-hold items such as paint, bat-teries, fl uorescent light bulbs, household cleaners and aero-sol cans.

People throw away basic household supplies that they do not realize are hazardous. The items are then taken away to local landfi lls and the waste slowly breaks down, potentially causing ground water contami-nation, according to Merrick Reid, the Stations environ-mental protection specialist and hazardous waste manager.

During the week of Earth Day, the Environmental Safety and Geospacial Services in-crease awareness of the po-tential problems that occur from hazardous items that are not disposed of properly, said Reid.

The clean-up was conducted in compliance with all solid waste management procedures.
