1.0 SUMMARY AND INTRODUCTION

The Placer Option (Qued) is a property which is owned by Placer Dome Canada and was

optioned to Hemlo Gold Mines Inc.in 1996. Hemlo Gold Mines Inc merged on July 19,1996 with

Battle Mountain Gold. As a result of the merger Battle Mountain Canada Ltd worked the Placer

Option. During the months of May, June and July, 1997 a hole diamond drill program was

conducted on the Placer Option (Qued) claim group. Five diamond drill holes totaling 1604 metres

were completed July 6, 1997. The expenditures associated with this program were sufficient to

meet the requirements of the agreement. Battle Mountain Canada Ltd. is now 60y0 vested in the

property.

The purpose of this 1997 diamond drill program was to test the alteration and potential

mineralization associated with the strike extent of the Armand Lake Porphyry along its northern

contact and the Qued Porphyry. The other criteria used in defining drill targets along the northern

contact of the Armand Lake Porphyry included geophysical IP anomalies and soil geochemistry

anomalies that are situated near the contacts of both the Armand Lake and Qued Porphyry

contacts.

Holes Q97-1 and Q97-4 are stratigraphic fences to test the lateral strike length of both the

Armand Lake and Qued Porphyry to determine if they have a similar alteration characteristics as

seen along the contact of the Lunny Lake Porphyry on the Fowler Option where drilling in 1995

intersected two horizons of anomalous gold mineralization. Although these horizons are spatially

associated with the Armand Lake and Lunny Lake Porphyries no significant alteration or gold

mineralization was intersected along the contacts of the Armand Lake Porphyry or the Qued

Porphyry. Numerous quartz phyric and quartz sericitic porphyritic sills which intruded mafic

flows between these two porphyries were encountered in all holes. Generally the alteration and its

intensity increased along the western section of the property.

The best gold assay values from this program were encounted in hole Q97-5. The interval

from 208.5 to 212.5 returned an average gold value of 0.429 g/ton over a four metre interval,

including a one metre sample of 0.625 g/ton Au, located along the southern contact of the Qued

Porphyry. Another anomalous gold value was encountered in hole Q97-2 where a one meter

Page 4: RPT ON DDH · Battle Mountain Gold. As a result of the merger Battle Mountain Canada Ltd worked the Placer Option. During the months of May, June and July, 1997 a hole diamond drill

sample grades 0.643 g/ton Au from 132-133 metres. This sample was hosted in a mafic volcanic

with minor interflow sediments that are magnetic. These mafics occur along the footwall contact of

the Armand Lake Porphyry.

The best sericitic alteration and gold values were from holes Q97-3 where gold values

range from 11 ppb (.0011 g/ton Au) to 81 ppb (.0081 g/ton Au). The average grade over a 5 metre

interval is 0.03 g/ton Au. These gold values are hosted in a sericitized quartz feldspar porphyry.

These values are directly north of significant intersections of 3.34gA: over 3 metres to the south

hosted in the Lunny Lake Porphyry.

2.0 LOCATION AND ACCESS (Figure 1)

The Placer Option (Qued) property is located approximately 5 km east of Highway 614

down the Dead Otter Lake/ Twist timber road. The Dead Otter Lake timber road is situated 14 km

north of Highway 17. Access can by gained to the property by either two of four wheel drive

vehicles.

5.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY (Figure 3)

The Placer Option (Qued) property is located within the North Limb region of the Archean

Schreiber-Hemlo greenstone belt that forms part of the Abitibi-Wawa-Shebandowan Subprovince

of the Superior Province. Supracrustal rocks of the Hemlo greenstone belt consist principally of

basaltic flows and subordinate tuffs, with a central core of epiclastic arkosic wacke and siltstone.

Page 11: RPT ON DDH · Battle Mountain Gold. As a result of the merger Battle Mountain Canada Ltd worked the Placer Option. During the months of May, June and July, 1997 a hole diamond drill

These rocks are bounded to the north by the Black-Pic Batholith and to the south by the Pukaskwa

Gneissic complex.

Interbeds of felsic volcanic tuffs and/or volcaniclastic sediments occur locally. Numerous small

elongate quartz-feldspar porphyry (QFP) stocks intrude the sequence. Equigranular to porphyritic

dikes and sills intrude the volcanics, sediments, and small QFP stocks.

In the Heron Bay area, Muir (1982 a,b) tentatively subdivided the greenstone belt into two groups:

1) the southern Playter Harbour Group comprising tholeiitic mafic flows and a northern Heron Bay

Group comprising mainly dacitic and rhyolitic calc-alkaline rocks. This calc-alkaline sequence

was interpreted by Muir (1982b, 1983) to represent a volcanic center. Williams et al. (1991) have

proposed an additional subdivision which would place rocks occurring north of the Hemlo Fault in

to a new assemblage termed the Hemlo-Black River. More work is required to verify whether this

subdivision is warranted.

The rocks of the Hemlo- Heron Bay greenstone belt have been interpreted to have been deformed

into a broad, east trending, doubly - plunging synform (Brown et al., 1985). In the vicinity of the

Hemlo mine complex, which is located on the southern limb, Muir et al (1988) have identified at

least four generations of structures that have been produced by at least two periods of deformation.

The intensity of deformation within the belt is variable. In general terms, deformation is stronger

in the southern limb of the synform and in particular, in the vicinity of the Lake Superior Shear

Zone, than in the central core and the northern limb of the synform. This holds true in most

regions of the Hemlo area with the exception of the pluton and batholith margins. Rocks located in

close proximity to the margins of these intrusives are generally isoclinally folded and sheared.

Metamorphic grade ranges from greenschist facies in the southwestern portion of the belt to

amphibolite facies in the eastern section of the belt. Local variations occur near the margins of the

granitoid batholiths.

7.0 DISCUSSION OF DRILL RESULTS

Property Geology: (Figure 5)

The following is a brief summary of the observations made on 5 diamond drill holes on the

Placer Option (Qued). The southern and central portion of the property is underlain by mafic

volcanics which have been intruded by The Armand Lake Porphyry to the south and the Qued

Porphyry 150 metres to the north. The mafic volcanics are massive to pillowed with minor

variolitic flows. The Armand Lake and Qued Porphyry are feldspar phyric. These porphyries are

fine to medium grained and the alteration associated with the contacts of these intrusive bodies is

generally weak. Between the Armand Lake and Qued Porphyries the mafic volcanics have been

intruded by a series of weakly to moderately altered feldspar and quartz phyric, porphyritic sills. A

series of clastic and chemical metasediments strike west along the property and are 3 -10 metres

wide. These iron formations are associated with IP Anomaly trends.

The sediments were the host to most visible mineralization which consisted of Pyrite (2-

4'Mj), pyrrhotite (\-3 07o) and trace chalcopyrite (Cp) mineralization. The Porphyry units consists of

Pyrite mineralization which ranged from being trace to l*Xi.

The best alteration is associated with small 3-10 metre porphyritic sills that intrude the

mafic volcanics and strike east west. In general sericitic alteration increases westward along the

property. Unfortunately there are not significant assay values associated with the alteration..

Summmary of 1997 Drilling On the Placer Option (QUED)

Q97-1:

The main purpose of this hole was to be a stratagraghic fence to test the lateral extension

of the Qued Porphyry and determine if sericitic alteration is associated this unit. The hole was also

designed to test an IP anomaly along a Northwest -Southeast IP trend in the central portion of the

property. The hole consists mostly of mafic volcanics with small altered porphyritic sills of quartz

feldspar porphyry up to 5 metres in width. The best alteration with in the hole comes from a 4.4

metre wide intensely silicified and moderately sericitized QFP located between 265.59 - 269.00

metres. The IP target was explained by a iron formation which occurs from 129 - 155 metres.

The most significant mineralization occurs with in the iron formation from 131-134 metres where

Py and Po form stringers of up 2 - 4 cm long and ^ mm wide. Pyrite is disseminated though out

the unit. Anomalous gold values of 183 ppb, 230 ppb and 127 ppb are from the interval between

349.95-353.92 metres. They are hosted in a weakly sericitized quartz feldspar porphyry from

344.40-356.81.

Q97-2:

Hole Q97-2 was collared in the Armand Lake Porphyry. The purpose of this hole was test

the sericitic alteration associated with the northern contact of the Armand Lake and Qued

Porphyries. The upper portion of hole (5 - 128.38 m's) consists of variable phases of fine to

medium grained feldspar porphyry. A narrow 2 metre wide quartz sericite schist l alteration zone

is present at the contact of the Armand Lake Porphyry and a magnetic iron formation which hosted

a sample of 0.643 g/ton Au over a l metre interval and is flanked by two l metre samples of 0.145

g/ton Au and 0.108 g/ton Au. This iron formation also explains the IP anomaly. The lower

portion of the hole is comprised of mafic volcanics with intercalated chemical and clastic

metasediments.

There is a series of weak to moderately altered porphyritic sills that exist between the

northern contact of the Armand Lake Porphyry to the south and the Qued Porphyry at (174 -

222.20 m) to the north. The lower section of the Qued Porphyry is a quartz sericite schist with thin

2 -3 cm wide feldspathic bands locally with weakly anomalous gold values. This unit returned an

average grade of .085 g/ton over a 5 metre interval from 207.54 to 213.54 metres

Q97-3:

Hole Q97-3 was collared in the northern contact of the Armand Lake Porphyry. It is along

strike of Q97-2 and is stratigraghically similar in the lithological units encounted along strike. The

hole intersected a series of medium to fine grained porphyritic sills that are unaltered to weakly

Page 18: RPT ON DDH · Battle Mountain Gold. As a result of the merger Battle Mountain Canada Ltd worked the Placer Option. During the months of May, June and July, 1997 a hole diamond drill

sericitized. The sericitized sills were also quartz phyric and occur at 139.44 - 142.76 m. The

Qued Porphyry occurs between 344 - 377.46 metres. The mafic volcanics are pillowed with flow

top breccia units that are mineralized with up to 207o pyrite.

The most significant alteration was at 190.5 - 198.5 metres where the presence of minor

feldspathic bands < l cm wide occur in sediments.

The IP anomaly in this hole can be explained by clastic and chemical metasediments from 171.95

- 200.20 metres. Locally within the iron formations are semi massive stringers of pyrite < .50 cm

wide and disseminated pyrrhotite mineralization.

The only significant gold values in this section were returned from a 5 metre interval

grading 0.03 g/ton, hosted in a quartz phyric porphyry from between 364 and 369 metres.

Q97-4

The purpose of hole Q97-4 was to test the lateral extent of the Qued Porphyry and test alteration

mapped on surface at depth. The hole was collared into a small granodiorite/ diorite felsic

intrusion, which was unexpected since there is no magnetic low associated with this area of the

property. The IP anomaly can be associated with a narrow iron formation 4 metres wide. Again the

section consists of pillowed and massive mafic volcanics that have been intruded with various

phases of feldspar and quartz feldspar porphyritic sills which have been moderately to strongly

sericitized. These units occur at 22.59 - 38.32 metres. The best sericitic alteration occurs at 87.5 -

101.70 metres. This unit is a quartz sericite schist with fine feldspathic laminations between 93.66

- 101.70.metres. There were no significant gold values associated with is alteration but a small

fleck of Mo, Pyrite 207o and tourmaline were present with in fine feldspathic laminations. The

highest assay value returned from this hole was 0.039 g/ton from this hole is from l metre interval

of brecciated pillowed mafic volcanics at 199 metres.

Q97-5:

This hole was designed to determine the strike extend of the Qued Porphyry to the west.

The Hole was collared in mafic volcanics and there is a series of feldspar and quartz porphyries

sills within the hole. The sills observed in this hole have the best alteration seen on the stratigraphic

horizons tested by this 1997 diamond drill program. The lower section of this hole intersected the

Qued Porphyry which where strong sericite alteration was observed. Assay results from this unit

returned gold vales of up to 0.625 g/ton over l metre and 0.429 g/ton over a four metre interval.

Page 20: RPT ON DDH · Battle Mountain Gold. As a result of the merger Battle Mountain Canada Ltd worked the Placer Option. During the months of May, June and July, 1997 a hole diamond drill

8.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Due to the limited alteration halo and lack of significant gold values along the contacts of The

Qued and Armond Lake Porphyry have a limited alteration halo and lack of significant gold values.

There is however a north south spatial relationship associated with anomalous gold in the Lunny

Lake Porophyry to the south and the Qued Porphyry to the north.

Future exploration efforts should concentrate on: Following the strike and depth extent of the

anomalous horizon located within the Armand Lake Porphyry to the East where significant gold

assays values and molybdenite mineralization have been encountered

127.53 139.44 (9FP, fx, Py)[Feldspar Porphyry]Again the unit has variable phased porphyry which varies from fine to medium grained. The unit is dark grey to black in colour with fx pheno's. Pyrite is Wo and finely disseminated and blebs The Upper contact angle is 62 degrees to the core axis and the foliation is 66 degrees to the core axis. The lower contact is crushed.

139.44 142.76 (9QFP, massive, qe, PK, Bi, Hemv, Qv) (Quartz Feldspar Porphyry] This small QFP unit has a strongly hematized upper contact which fizzles out at 140 massive. The unit is coarse grained and qe's are l cm in diameter and well developed. The unit has a pink fleshy colour due to moderate alteration and fades out near the lower contact of the unit. The LCA is 70 degrees to the core axis.

142.76 152.12 (9FP, fx, Hemv.Epv) [Feldspar Porphyry]Again the unit is medium grained and dark grey in colour with fx pheno's. There is minor hematite micro veins which are a deep reddish colour while

Epidote veins are lime green in colour. There is asmall zone of 151.75 where intense hematite and epidote veins. The lower contact is at 55 degrees to the core axis. The foliation in this unit Is weak and 63 degrees to the core axis.

152.12 171.95 (2U/ 5St, Qcv, Py, Sil)[Mafic Volcanic with Interflow Sediments] Mafic Volcanics are moderately silicified with a weak foliation 66 degrees to the core axis. There are small interflow sediment sub - units with pyrite bands. These units look more altered than the

mafics and are equigranular. Some area look to beweakly developed calc silicate bands. There is a minor l massive coarse grained dyke at 170.95 - 171.95

171.95 200.20 (4IF75St, [Qcv], lam, PY, PO, Bi, Ser, gts) [Iron Formation]

It is fine to mediummassive grained and weakly biotitic. There are minor garnets are associated with quartz carbonate veins and numerous pyrite and pyrrhotite stringers are sub - parallel to the foliation which is 67 degrees to the core axis. Locally semi massive stringers of pyrite .51 cm wide. The matrix is platy and looks to be a silicified argillite locally. There are minor alteration bands of sericite at 189.5 - 190.5 and 198.25 - 198.75. There is minor grey feldpathized bands from 190-195 metres. The sediments are intensely altered from 198 - 200.5 where sericite is moderate and there is weak feldspathization bands. The sulphide content decrease down section and the unit becomes more coarse grained SSt.The entire unit is moderately to strongly magnetic.

200.20 239.00 (2U, fol,Bi,Py,Qcv)[Weakly Foliated Mafic Volcanic]The unit is equigranular with fine pyrite stringers and small altered zones of semi massive pyrite epidote and quartz carbonate veins at 216.85 - 216.95 and at221.10 - 221.30. There is whitish feather looking pheno's that are not Carbonate Possible Lx or altered garnets. The unit is variable in both grain size and colour. It ranges from black in fine grained areas to medium green in medium grained area of the unit. And sometimes takes on a mottled appearance. There are weakly laminated alteration sections of the unit where the unit is sericitized and silicified. These alteration bands have a pink to purplish hue and are mineralized they occur at 226.8 - 227 and 227.87 - 228.09 Pyrite is 3 07o in these zones

6.5 19.30 (9QFP, Ser, fx, qe, Py, Bi))[Quartz Feldspar Porphyry] QFP: the unit has a porphyritic texture and crystalline. It is medium grained and light to medium grey in colour. The QE's are rounded and feldspar phenos and biotite with in the groundmass are elongated along the foliation

19.30 92.61 (2U,P,Bx, Qcv, Var, Py )[Carbonatized Pillowed Mafic Volcanic Flows] Mafic Volcanic: Fine to medium grained and medium to dark grey in colour. Again Carbonate is part of the groundmass and Quartz carbonate veins are present. There are pillow selvages and flow top breccia units which are variolitic. The unit has minor zones of sericite lamination alteration at 39 - 41 metres and at 66 66.5 metres. The lower contact of the Mafic unit has small lath to feather shaped white porphoblasts which may be carbonate. Note that this unit is weakly magnetic . There is a small 9FP at 70.2 - 71. The unit becomes more massivelooking down section locally some silicified sections are present near quartz carbonate veins. There is the loss of variloes down section. The pillow selvages and brecciated units are epidote altered.

92.61 113.19 (9QFP, fx, qe, sw, Epv, Bi, Ser, Py) [Quartz Feldspar Porphyry]The unit is variable in colour and is dependent on sericite and epidote alteration that is present. The unit is dark grey to light grey in colour with a biotitic groundmass. There is weak to moderate sericite alteration laminations that are light green and yellowish in colour. There is well developed quartz eyes. There is a weak stockwork present. The
