Andrew Till was almost
predestined to become a
landscape painter. His family
cottage in Go Home Bay is set
among the actual rocks and
pines featured in so many
Group of Seven classics. Across
the water stands the renowned
McCallum cottage in which
Tom Thompson, Arthur Lismer
and J.E.H. MacDonald painted
the mural panels now on display
at the National Gallery.
As a student at Upper Canada
College, his gifts caught the
eye of A.Y. Jackson who became
a friend and frequent summer
painting and sketching partner.
After graduating from Trinity
College and Ontario College of
Art, he travelled widely in Europe
and Mexico and was part of
the turbulent New York art scene
of the sixties, but never lost
touch with his artistic or personal
roots in Canada.
The Festival of the Sound chose
the image “Daybreak” to honour
Parry Sound artist Andrew Till on
the 10th anniversary of his death.
Dear Friends
Come to the Festival of the Sound for a marvellous
birthday party, a three week celebration of our
30th season, the anniversaries of some of history’s
greatest composers – Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn
– and the centenary of one rather infludential clarinet
player, Benny Goodman.
We have invited as many of our old friends as we could
to the party. Some first performed here as young artists
and are now regulars on the world stage. New friends
this year include emerging stars such as the Stockey
Young Artist Frederieke Saeijs and the Spanish pianist
Leo Erice and internationally renowned ensembles like
the Leipzig String Quartet and the Canadian Brass.
As you look through the brochure you will notice many
of your favourite works: Bach’s Goldberg Variations,
Handel’s Messiah, the Mendelssohn and Schubert
Octets. Interestingly enough, when I asked the musicians
which works they would most enjoy performing, many
chose the same ones you love to hear.
A good way to celebrate, a good way to party.
Join us on the shores of Georgian Bay for great concerts
in the spectacular Charles W. Stockey Centre for the
Performing Arts.

James Campbell
True to his nature, James
Campbell did not mention in
his greetings that we are also
celebrating his 25th season
as Artistic Director. He is going
to celebrate by doing what he
does best, playing the clarinet.
Look through the programmes
for Mozart’s Clarinet Trio,
Clarinet Quintet and Gran Partita
for 13 Winds, Mendelssohn’s
Concert Piece and John
William’s Air & Simple Gifts
(from the Barack Obama
inauguration). Hear Jim with
the Elora Festival Singers
in Missa Pax, a new work
for clarinet and choir by
Timothy Corlis. He’ll play in
the style of Benny Goodman,
both classical and jazz.
You are invited to give Jim a
congratulatory gift through
the Note-by-Note Campaign
(page 20).

30th Anniversary Season Highlights• Gala Opening Fanfare Concerts with Hannaford Street
Silver Band and Canadian Brass
• Anniversary Gala Dinner – An Elegant Evening
• Festival Chamber Orchestra – July 25 and August 9
• Three great choirs: Toronto Mendelssohn Choir,
Elora Festival Singers, Elmer Iseler Singers
• Four great string quartets: Penderecki, Lafayette,
New Zealand and Leipzig
• Two great piano duos: Anagnoson & Kinton and York2
• Two great piano trios: Gryphon and Hochelaga
Music from the Inside OutIn 2001, Artistic Director James Campbell introduced
Music from the Inside Out, a series of lectures, discussions
and open rehearsals, as an opportunity to “eat, sleep, breath
and live music for a few days, just as musicians do for most
of their lives.” This has become an integral part of the Festival
experience for many. This year, Jeffrey Stokes invites you to join
him In the Mendelssohns’ Parlour on the 200th anniversary of
the composer’s birth and Keith Horner takes you down memory
lane and looks to the future with 30 Minutes for 30 Years,
a series of pre-concert interviews.
Painted Sound – July 30, August 6In Painted Sound, the Festival celebrates the relationship
between visual arts and music. On Thursday, July 30,
Anagnoson & Kinton perform the piano four-hands version of
the full ballet score for Stravinsky’s Petrouchka. Alan Stein has
painted a series of watercolours depicting key scenes in the
ballet as if they were set designs in the original Ballets Russes
tradition. These will be projected as the music is performed.
And on August 6, the York2 Piano Duo perform the piano duet
version of Holst’s The Planets with projected paintings of the
planets by Parry Sound children.
Ballets Russes – The Film – August 6 Unearthing a treasure trove of archival footage, filmmakers
Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine have fashioned a dazzling
ode to the revolutionary twentieth-century dance troupe
known as the Ballets Russes. Infused with wonderful anecdotal
interviews from many of the company’s glamorous stars,
Ballets Russes treats us to a rare glimpse of the remarkable
merger of Russian, American, European, and Latin American
dancers, choreographers, composers, and designers that
transformed the face of ballet for generations to come.
Island Queen CruisesEnjoy Georgian Bay sunsets as the cruise ship Island Queen
takes a wandering three-hour route through the wild and rugged
beauty of the 30,000 Islands, a region recently designated by
the United Nations as the Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere
Reserve. These cruises have been a highlight of every Festival
season since our inception, blending wonderful music with
breathtaking scenery. Performances are on the lower deck of
the Island Queen and can be heard throughout the ship.
Winds on the Water – August 7Experience all the surprises of a morning on Georgian Bay
aboard the M.V. Chippewa with the Festival Winds. Order tickets
early as these cruises always sell out.

Canada Day Cruise – July 1Celebrate Canada’s birthday with the Shores of Newfoundland,
a “down east” band that specializes in the music of the
Maritimes and Newfoundland. The evening ends on a quiet
note as the Island Queen returns to the harbour and drifts for
a fireworks display. A Canada Day tradition since 1991.
Benny Goodman at 100 – July 26A double celebration: Benny Goodman was born 100 years
ago and Gene DiNovi recorded an album with Benny of music
from The Sound of Music 50 years ago. Hear arrangements
from that album, as well as Benny’s greatest hits such as
Memories of You and Don’t be that Way. The Charles W.
Stockey Festival Performance Hall is transformed into a club,
with guests seated at tables. Dessert and coffee are included
in the ticket price. Also hear the classical music that Benny
Goodman loved, at noon on July 23.
Inn at Manitou Gala – July 28The Inn at Manitou, one of Canada’s most elegant resorts, is
nestled on the shores of Lake Manitouwabing. This intimate
evening includes a full-course, haute cuisine dinner with wines.
Guests then adjourn to the Tea Room for an exclusive
opportunity to hear baritone Russell Braun and pianist Carolyn
Maule in recital. Patrons receive an income tax credit receipt
for a portion of the ticket price.
Primadonna Goes into the Woods – August 4Where else would our favourite Primadonna, Mary Lou Fallis,
go when she decides to “rough it” but to the five star Inn at
Manitou. Sheila Wise has graciously invited her in for the night
as a respite from the rigours of the campgrounds and outdoor
facilities on the rest of her tour. She and Peter Tiefenbach
will set up camp in the elegant Tea Room and share their
outrageous “camping” experiences with our audience who will
enjoy the comforts of the Inn with her. After a show including
hilarious songs such as Mosquito Merengue and a “cooking
in the wild” skit where martinis serve as first aid, all are invited
to join her for coffee and dessert.
Jazz Canada has been a Civic Holiday weekend tradition at the Festival of the Sound since 2002. The Saturday evening concert features the star-studded Dave Young Octet. From swing to bop to modern jazz, you will hear music by legendary musicians such as Duke Ellington and original works by Rick Wilkins, Dave Young and Phil Dwyer. Plus the world premiere of Young Suite, a three-movement work composed for the legendary Dave Young by Allan Gilliland. On Sunday afternoon be a part of the excitement when great improvisers, David Braid, David Young, Mark Fewer and Zapp, meet. That evening, meet an exciting young band, the Toronto All-Star Big Band reviving the spirit, style and sound of 1930’s and 40’s – the golden age of the big bands. As a special gift to the audience, the legendary Peter Appleyard makes a guest appearance. Wrap up the Jazz Canada Weekend with a sunset musical cruise on the Island Queen as vocalist Carol McCartney offers songs with a summer theme including The Summer Knows, The Summer Wind and Georgia in Summertime.

Frederieke SaeijsFrederieke Saeijs of The Netherlands started to play the
violin at age seven and graduated from the Royal
Conservatory in The Hague with Bachelor and Master
degrees. She continued her violin study with Mauricio
Fuks at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in
Bloomington, Indiana where she received both the
Performer Diploma and the Artist Diploma. In 2005 she
won the First Grand Prix at the Marguerite Long-Jacques
Thibaud competition in Paris. Since then she has performed

himself on Canadian and international stages. He had his
orchestral debut with the Calgary Civic Symphony at 9,
as the youngest winner of the Calgary Concerto
Competition and has since performed more than 30 times
with orchestras in Canada and abroad. He has played at
Carnegie Hall and has shared the stage with Yo-Yo Ma,
Pinchas Zukerman, James Ehnes, and Emanuel Ax.

Toronto All-Star Big Band with special guest Peter Appleyard
One of Canada’s most exciting young bands, the Toronto All-Star Big Band revives the spirit, style and sound of 1930’s and 40’s – the golden age of the big bands. With brilliant programming, slick choreography and witty cultural nostalgia, this vibrant cast of players, aged 16 to 22, makes its first Festival of the Sound visit. Tonight the legendary Peter Appleyard makes a special guest appearance with the Toronto All-Star Big Band.

for a very special gala dinner on Monday, July 20 at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. Food has always played a very important role in the Festival of the Sound’s celebrations, both for raising funds and for building relationships. Celebrate the 30th anniversary season and James Campbell’s 25th anniversary as Artistic Director with an evening of music, laughter, wine, good friends, good conversation and fine food. Keith Horner hosts the evening and Festival musicians offer an intimate concert as their anniversary gift. Come and raise a glass or two to the Festival’s first 30 seasons and help us to raise funds for many more years of wonderful music to come. Your support and encouragement, shown by your presence with us, are particularly welcome in these challenging economic times.
A tax receipt for $75 will be issued for each ticket sold. Wine with dinner is included in the price of the ticket. The dress code is “Parry Sound Elegance,” ranging all the way from black tie to smart casual. Seating is reserved at tables for eight, so order early to avoid disappointment.

CREATE A BETTER FUTURE
Let The Music Play On
In order that we may present
exceptional concerts for at least
30 more seasons, we are conducting
the “Note-by-Note” fundraising
campaign. James Campbell has
planned for many years to bring
together enough of his colleagues
to perform the Mozart Serenade for
13 Winds, Gran Partita. But each
year, when it came time to trim the
budget, he decided that we really
couldn’t afford the extra players. This
year, when the topic came up again,
Executive Director Margaret Boyd
would not let him cut it out and
promised that we would find a way to
do it. And that’s where you come in!
In addition to asking you to renew
your support of the Festival with
a donation to our annual campaign,
we are inviting you to buy a symbolic
musical note for $25.00 or a full bar
of the Gran Partita for $100. Now you
may ask if there is a special price for
bars where the oboes and clarinets
rest for a line or two. The answer is
no, since we still have to pay them
to count! More seriously, the
performance of the Gran Partita on
August 6 will be one not to be
missed. This is the work that led
Mozart’s rival Salieri to muse in the
movie Amadeus, “It seemed to me
that I was hearing the voice of God.”
The campaign will continue through
the summer season with the names
of all contributors to the Note-by-Note
campaign included in a memento of
the evening that will be given to
James Campbell with our thanks.

MembershipThe Festival of the Sound delivers Canada’s finest summer experiences – intimate performances by outstanding chamber musicians in the spectacular Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on the shores of Georgian Bay. To present world calibre concerts at affordable ticket prices, the Festival Board raises two dollars for every dollar generated at the Box Office. Since we keep administrative costs as low as possible, your membership donation has a direct impact on artistic programming and free educational opportunities for children and adults. A recent survey of 226 Canadian performing arts organizations showed that 8% of the total revenue was raised through individual donations. At the Festival of the Sound, our individual donors contributed 18% of our revenue in 2007. Thanks to the support of this wonderful membership base, we are now one of Canada’s most successful musical organizations.
All contributions are gratefully received and are eligible for a tax credit receipt. With a donation of $25 or more, you will become a member of the Festival of the Sound and receive a pre-Christmas mailing with special offers on passes and merchandise, our newsletter Soundings outlining advance information about the upcoming season, early mailing of the season brochure, and listing in the souvenir programme. The Festival Board offers contributors of $250 or more tickets to their concert of choice (excluding Opening Night, cruises and special events).
Your investment in the future of the Festival of the Sound is very much appreciated.

Impressions of the Massasauga Provincial Park
The Massasauga Provincial Park
stretches along the coast of
Georgian Bay from Parry Sound to
the Moon River. It includes
spectacular windswept islands as
well as inland forests and lakes and
is a sanctuary for many protected
species. Once a year a group of
Ontario artists tours the park in
visual study. The composition of
the group changes annually, as
do their impressions of the park.
The artwork in this exhibition
represents the participating artists’
unique perspective of this
exceptional Canadian landscape.
All are invited to the show
opening on Saturday, July 18 at
4:00 P.M. The show continues
through to August 9.

Charles & Lois Stockey Endowment Fund
Charles and Lois Stockey were
supporters of and workers for
the Festival of the Sound in its
formative years before they moved
to Victoria, BC. In 2002, what began
with a casual question about what
was happening now in Parry Sound
led to a donation of $1.7 million to
name the Charles W. Stockey Centre
for the Performing Arts. Now the
Festival has a home, an intimate
performance hall that has come to
be ranked as one of the finest in
the world for chamber music.
During the 25th Anniversary Season
in 2004, the Festival Board
established the Charles and Lois
Stockey Endowment Fund to honour
our benefactors. To ensure the
long-term health of the organization,
all donations directed to this fund
are invested, with the interest used
to support annual operations.
Charles Stockey died in
September of 2004 after a lengthy
battle with cancer. Lois lives in
Victoria but maintains a keen interest
in news from Parry Sound and looks
forward to her annual visit for the
summer concert series.
Information about the Charles and
Lois Stockey Endowment Fund is
available at all Festival of the Sound
concerts. Speak to one of the
Directors wearing a “gold badge” or
call the Festival Office. Contributions
of any size are welcome and are
eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

Grades 4 to 6 in thirteen area schools
enjoy six concert experiences, some
of which have included the True
North Brass, a woodwind quintet, a
jazz ensemble, the Toronto Symphony
Youth Orchestra and most recently
a quartet of singers. Prior to each
of these concerts, the musicians visit
every school, getting to know the
students in an informal setting,
demonstrating their instruments and
preparing them for the concert.
Then all 700 children come to the
Stockey Centre by bus or on foot to
listen to the musicians, now their
friends, in a formal concert setting.
No opening night audience can
match the excitement that precedes
each of these concerts.
